Note: While the video is having a little fun poking fun at things, This is more or less how the story goes. But there are interviews with Nichelle Nichols and written accounts in books about Trek, saying how things really happened. Gene wasn't perfect, but he was forward-thinking enough to include a black woman on the bridge with an Asian man, a Russian, a Southern white man, and so on. Ms. Nichols really did think about quitting, really did hear from Dr. King, who urged her to stay for those reasons, and she really did stay for the 2nd and 3rd seasons, to play a black woman officer on a starship bridge, sometimes doing much more than just opening those dang hailing frequencies. That she could be a beautiful woman and be an officer, that she could be black and serving as an equal alongside the white folks and others, was indeed a big deal. So was that first interracial kiss. Star Trek was diverse and equal-rights long before that was popular on TV or in real life. And without Star Trek doing it, who knows when we would've gotten that. It inspired and taught a whole generation or more, of black and brown and Asian and white kids, who grew up a little more OK with themselves and people who looked and sounded a little different. -- Nichelle Nichols rocks. Thank you for this. Nichelle is a personal childhood hero of mine. I love her so much, her 1976 Mego doll is wearing Captain Kirk's uniform all the time in my house. She occupies this quiet corner of history as a first step taker that many non-trekkie people do not remember or know and as funny as this is, it makes a huge impact for future generations. So again, thank you.
Oh my god so of course I was named after her and like oh my God how many times have I repeated the story to people, well like it totally didn’t go that way buuuuuttttttt
Everything she said here, is true. Including Shatner crossing his eyes so they'd have to use a real kiss clip! And Ms. Nichols knew (as do I because I am still one...) that we are called TREKKERS, not Trekkies. I'd sit in front of the TV with a big mic and my reel to reel, recording every single first-aired episode. I've got it all memorized. She was such a great Lady. I'll miss her. I had no idea that she lived so close in Silver City, NM! The only stain is the two men bickering over her conservancy later in her life. She changed my world. I'm not one of the fanatics who puts on ears and a costume, or goes to comicons. I just loved the show, and still love the reruns that Comet TV airs. They say she walked into Roddenberry's office one day and said with a smile and suspicion: "I know what you're doing... you're making little morality plays!" And it's true. Rest In Peace, Ms. Nichols. You did so much with your life. You're a grand, classy lady and a wonderful actor.
Respect. I met Ms. Nichols and honestly, she wasn't kind or nice or warm - this depiction of her is pretty spot on, actually. But nothing but much respect for what she did for history!!
Wow I just found this and I am a big drunk history fan. I knew most of this, not the Shantner part. I had the honor and wonderful experience of meeting Nichelle at the first Star trek convention in New York at the Sheraton hotel my mom took me ,the whole cast was there. I remember George Tikia belting out a country western song with this amazing deep voice , Defrost Kelly also sang ,Leonard Nimoy telling us how he came up with the Vulcan hand greeting . They all shared wonderful stories and Bill and Nichelle spoke about "the kiss* and did a mock redo of it. Towards the end we got to meet and mingle, Mr.shatner did not participate. Nichelle and the others did. When I tell you she is the most beautiful stunning woman in person and so kind. I was standing in front of my hero and had trouble getting my mouth to work. She smiled at me said thank you for coming and hugged me 🤯 We chatted a for a short time and she was very encouraging. I met the other cast members except Bill. I was a teenager when I met her and I can still feel her hug , it was genuine. One of my best memories ever. Nichelle Nichols is a National and World treasure .
Lol William Shatner is such a boss... Not only did he play the studio, but he kissed Nishele Nichols a bunch of times. Not sure which one mattered to him more, but good for him either way.... It's pretty pathetic that an interracial kiss was such a big deal in 1964.
What I loved the most about the new Star Trek movies is that Leonard Nimoy ruefully told everyone his big regret about the difference between the Kelvin stuff and the OS is that he didnt get to kiss Nichelle.
learning that MLK was a trekkie is just the greatest.
BigRaffa17 nichelle wasnt bad to look at and I am thinking was his primary motivation for asking to stay on the show. Thank you MLK.
Frank Kepler what? That is clearly not the reason.

This was excellent, and Raven was so beautiful and right on point with the delivery. This is how children should be taught history. Hooray for Uhura!
this is how I learned science as a kid. at science dept college parties w/my mom.
I cry with joy every time. I adore Nichelle Nichols.
Rest in Peace Nichelle Nicholas, you did so much for so many people and will be remembered for a long time to come.
** Ohforgodssake!. NICHOLS, not Nicholas! Sheesh!
It’s so dope because we met Mae Jamison at my school😫😫 and she talked about Star Trek. I was hoping we’d talk about it. This is dope
Raven Symone looks like a young Octavia Spencer.
Twimbo do you think she should play her.
Wha 🤨.... apparently you must be using space goggles!? #wedontalllookalike😐
😀😂🤣... actually, I see that with some of her expressions...good eye!
Do she burn chicken? Hell no Minnie dont burn chicken
Is it the hair? It's the hair
omg what if they starred in a movie as mother and daughter ? o.o
Great twist to this truthful story. Thanks for the smile. RIP Uhura.
Rest in peace Mrs. Nichols. A true Icon, and inspiration to the world. I salute a life well lived.
Rest in peace, Ms. NIchols and thank you.
I need a t-shirt that says, "I'm Martin Luther King; I have no chill."
1 better:
"I'm Martin Luther King Jr.
I'm a Trekkie with no chill"😄.
Seriously!
"Nails too long for space." Love it.
Nichelle Nichols was my tv Shero. She was an important activist, beautiful, refined and a talented actress. RIP
Rest In Peace Nichelle. You’re with the stars now.
I can't believe I never knew that she recruited the first "others" for NASA! Too cool!
This is the first Drunk History that straight up made me cry because it's such a beautiful story.
"She literally integrated space" omg I'm crying! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Watching this now after the sad news of Nichelle Nichols passing. What an amazing woman.
"No, I'm Martin Luther King, I have NO chill..." yas
RIP NICHELLE. Thank you for making ak impact in TV and in Space 🖖🏽🖖🏽🖖🏽
Rest in peace Nichelle, you are my name sake I love you!!!
"I'm Martin Luther King. I have no chill."
BEST line in the whole series.
RIP Nichelle Nichols. She was not only a part of television history but also civil rights history. You will be missed.
and space history too.
RIP Nichelle Nicoles. She lived long and prospered. 😢😢😢
I fucking LOVE drunk history!
Marilyn Chambers is this your real name?
Me too!!! I love the Harriet Tubman episode & the one with Lisa Bonet (Marie Pleasante)
RIP to a legendary lady.
I literally almost started crying just now. So good.
I literally almost started crying. Again.
Ok, I officially love William Shatner now.
Oh my god so of course I was named after her and like oh my God how many times have I repeated the story to people, well like it totally didn’t go that way buuuuuttttttt
That is so cool 😎!
Dr. Mae Jemison rules!!
I had no idea that she lived so close in
Silver City, NM!
The REAL Nichelle is in the video list.... :/
Respect. I met Ms. Nichols and honestly, she wasn't kind or nice or warm - this depiction of her is pretty spot on, actually. But nothing but much respect for what she did for history!!
“ no I’m Martin Luther king I have no chill” damn straight lol
She smiled at me said thank you for coming and hugged me 🤯
We chatted a for a short time and she was very encouraging. I met the other cast members except Bill. I was a teenager when I met her and I can still feel her hug , it was genuine. One of my best memories ever.
Nichelle Nichols is a National and World treasure .
Same doe
*'. TAKEI... not Tikia. Sheesh,
Lol William Shatner is such a boss... Not only did he play the studio, but he kissed Nishele Nichols a bunch of times. Not sure which one mattered to him more, but good for him either way.... It's pretty pathetic that an interracial kiss was such a big deal in 1964.
Brian-84blizzle I would repeat the scene several times too 😏
100%
1968
I agree.
Definitely a BOSS move.
Bravo to both of them.
d0000d "miscegenation" was a huge thing for centuries lol
Rest in Peace Nichelle Nichols
😂 I love that That's So Raven twirlin' around in space~ *I have a vision of the future, Captain.*
I like the way this is done. Easy to understand for newbies and non-nerds, funny, and generally accurate.
What I loved the most about the new Star Trek movies is that Leonard Nimoy ruefully told everyone his big regret about the difference between the Kelvin stuff and the OS is that he didnt get to kiss Nichelle.
"IIiii have a dream. But brothers and sisters, I have no chill!"
This brought tears to my eyes. LOVE it!! ***LLAP my friends***
I love it when the comedian gets really emotional telling their story. Usually makes me cry too.
The BEST Drunk History I have watched so far.... Raven dominated that sh!t💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜 Jaleel dominated that sh!t💚💚💚💚💚💚💚 ....and I learned a lot, too!
I’m in tears. This is so beautiful.
