Ok, so in these stories, the heroine is threatened with a divorce if they don't accomadate the wishes of the MIL or husband. Don't forget FIL's can be just as bullying and cruel to their Son-in-laws, just like MILs to their DIL's. Usually it's about money and status, not being manly enough or their simple bullies by nature. I really wish you got your genders right, is jill a boy who's mom named him jill bc she wanted a girl and didn't have enough money to have a infant get a sex change or is jill a girl, is op married to a girl, a guy or trans, or are you writers trying to normalize confusion of gender to your readers, they my not understand about about repation with words and how it can affect what a person belives, but i do.
