    Why the delay in posting? Unfortunately, I had to return home because of a tragedy in my family, and haven't had the emotional or physical energy to get a new video produced on-time. But, it's finally done, and I hope you enjoy!
    Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific.
    I am sailing Tarka around the world in part to raise money and awareness for coral conservation by supporting the Coral Reef Alliance. You can learn more here:
    www.theadventur...
    or visit their website directly:
    www.coral.org
    If you make a donation to their website directly in Tarka's honor, please send me an e-mail copy of your receipt so I can keep track of Tarka's fundraising. You can forward to:
    theadventuresoftarka@gmail.com
    Additional support for Tarka’s sail for CORAL (The Coral Reef Alliance) comes from donations by:
    Soylent - Healthy provisioning for the long offshore passages
    Sta Lok - Swage-less terminals for portions of Tarka’s rigging, making it an easy DIY job and allowing for easy inspection

    Hi, really enjoying your videos, I had a Vega (#1701) and lived aboard for 2 years in the UK. Mine too had a Navik steering gear, brilliant thing to have, how are you getting on with yours? There are a few bits that can fall off if it you're not careful but you can tie them on with a loose loop of thin wire to be safe. I spent a couple of years around the Caribbean (diving mostly) before I got into sailing, if you're considering Colombia at some point have a look at Santa Marta, there's a marina there, not sure about anchoring/whether safe? Taganga is a small town a quick bus ride away that's well worth a visit (you could definitely anchor there but the local kids will be all over your boat), and Parque Nacional Tayrona is on the doorstep. Have you seen Cruising Lea Lea channel? Good luck to you both I wish I was there...

    A tip on flying the Gennaker - which is a fantastic sail from beam-reach to running in light air.
    Use the snuffer to gybe and one sheet (line) on the clew and no downhaul on the Tack
    a) This saves you trying to gybe the sail while it fully flying (save the heroics and practice for very, very light air) and
    b) if you use only *one line* on the clew you won't have a "loose windward sheet" to fall over the side, under the bow and get wedged in the rudder stock under water.
    Not that I'm speaking from experience (ha).

    That issue with the bugs in the pasta is one of the main reasons why most cruisers put their foods like that in plastic sealed containers......might be an idea to get some. Otherwise, enjoy your cruising......

    • @TheAdventuresofTarka
      @TheAdventuresofTarka  6 лет назад +2

      Probably true! Though we did find bugs in some of our plastic containers as well, perhaps those ones came with the pasta though.

      To avoid weevil infestations in your wheat products add a handful of bay leaves to flour and pasta containers, and sprinkle throughout galley cupboards. If you find one weevil there will be many more in your future as they lay their eggs inside wheat products. Discarding all of the flour/pasta you found it in is the only way to get rid of them.

      @@TheAdventuresofTarka Foodsaver is amazing. Costs a little more and takes some prep time when provisioning, but they're infallible in my limited experience.

    • @RVLifeNOW

      Search You Tube for "Provisioning for Sailing an Ocean, An Exact Provisioning List" and you will see closeups of weevils and how their eggs are naturally in nearly all grain products. Without proper treatment, the eggs will hatch out. Protein! It does no harm to eat that protein but it does not taste like steak! So the thing is, don't over provision.

    I cant understand why your using a voice over rather than talking whilst recording as this seems so unreal and there are microphones that you can get that will not pick up wind so much whilst sailing, if you talk about your adventures whilst doing the recordings of the adventure at least it would be more realistic especially with having the sea breezes in the background, thats another reason why these recording seem unreal and unnatural because of the lack of sounds of the sea breezes and winds, we need to be hearing them in the films, im not particularly enjoying these because of no sea breezes as these are just unnatural and look very unreal with the voice over, and not talking whilst facing the camera is so unreal and is fake, I dont care if people slate me over this but its just my honest opinion as ive seen others sailing the high seas filming their progress and talking to the camera and no voice overs being used by them and they've filmed in rough seas

    You make a really valid point in this video. When we live our routine, 9 to 5 lives, it seems as though times flies because nothing really differentiates each day from the next. When I'm traveling in my bus for 4 months though Mexico it seems like so much longer because every day is a unique experience.

    Looks like everything is falling into place for you. That young lady is a trooper!
    That boat fire was pretty crazy! I think mayday was the right call, it was immanent danger, it got peoples attention.
    Also blasting on your horn is a really good idea because some folks just aren't gonna have their radios on.
    I haven't experienced a boat fire yet, but the other day we re-floated a boat using a can of Pabst blue ribbon and some toilet seal wax to stuff the through hull that had gone missing.
    I think you have the right attitude about helping others, you watch any of the old John Wayne movies and that attitude is there, it is the cowboy way, only here it is on the sea!
    Happy birthday! I have a feeling this next year of your life is going to be even better!
    On that note by the time you all get through the Canal I will probably be in Panama on the west side somewhere.

    • @TheAdventuresofTarka
      @TheAdventuresofTarka  6 лет назад

      Haha, I don't know about that, I still need 4-6lbs if I don't want to be fighting to stay down at the end of the dive.

    • @realulli
      @realulli 6 лет назад

      They're in salt water. The salinity is much higher than that of the human body, so I assume yes, they will need dive weights. Not sure about fresh water diving, though. :-)

    • @artsmith103
      @artsmith103 6 лет назад

      realulli He was nice enough to provide the exact answer. It all comes down to how much neoprene they're wearing. I never dove long enough to empty a tank. There's about 6.5 lbs of air in the tank. Interesting that he needs 4-6 more lbs at the end to stay down. He's right on the edge. A big lunch and a rock in each pocket would do it :-)
