In this soap making video I share my favorite cold process soap recipe right now. This soap is palm free and vegan, and in my humble opinion, the best handmade soap recipe😎
I often make this soap with a few variations. This time, I tried it with grapeseed oil and I really liked the end result. I also experimented with alkanet root infused olive oil to try to achieve a natural purple color. It worked out okay, but I think I could’ve used a bit more alkanet for a more intense color.
Do you want to learn how to formulate your own favorite soap recipe? Check out the soap formulator’s workbook here: www.tellervo.fi/shop/p/the-so...
Thank you for watching! Please wear proper safety equipment when making soap.
My favorite cold process soap recipe:
Recipe calculated with: soapee.com/calculator
Oils:
192 g alkanet root infused olive oil (32%)
42 g castor oil (7%)
36 g grapeseed oil (6%)
168 g coconut oil (28%)
90 g shea butter (15%)
72 g cocoa butter (12%)
Lye solution:
125 g distilled water
10 g citric acid
89.8 g sodium hydroxide (83.8 g if not using citric acid)
(40% lye concentration, 5% superfat)
Additives:
45 g coconut cream
10 ml fragrance oil for a light scent
Cure the soap for 4-6 weeks before using it on your skin.
○ Citric acid information
When citric acid and sodium hydroxide lye (NaOH) are combined, sodium citrate is created. Sodium citrate works as a chelator in soap.
A chelator traps metal ions such as calcium and magnesium that can be found in tap water.
These metal contaminants can cause rancidity and soap scum in handmade soap.
A chelator binds to these metals so that they can’t bind to the soap molecules. This way the soap won’t react with them and the soap's lather improves + shelf life increases.
Citric acid does not lower the pH of soap. Instead it consumes some of the lye and increases the superfat. Add 6 g extra lye for every 10 g of citric acid added to a soap recipe if you want to keep the superfat % at the same level.
How much citric acid should be added to soap?
Usage rate in bar soap is 1-2% of the oil weight.
How to use citric acid
Add citric acid to the distilled water and dissolve completely before adding the lye, or make a separate solution of citric acid and distilled water and add to the oils.

I hope you are still answering questions. The video shows 240g of olive oil, the recipe below the video shows 192g of infused olive oil. Which one do I use 240g or 192g? I LOVE, LOVE your video. So professional and tranquil. Thank you for sharing. I will be 71 and I can't wait to try making this.
Lindo ficou seu sabonete!
I have always loved your videos so decided to try this followed all measurements and within 30 seconds of pouring the lye water into the oils I had soap on a stick. I spent almost 5 mins pushing it in the mold in hopes of it being solid and not holy and ugly. It is now in the gel stage so hopefully it comes out better than it went in.
I'm so sorry to hear that, I haven't had the same experience at all..
I did end up rebatching it as it was so full of holes and seemed to be lye heavy. It’s been 8 weeks drying and it did turn out to be a very good bar of soap. I’ll try the recipe again.
@@wandamuse7475 hi, did you ever try the recipe again?

I always love watching your videos. This is a gorgeous bar of soap! I think the color morph is weird but cool.
Thank you Heather, I think you may have mistaken the cocoa butter for beeswax, they can sometimes look similar😊
@@tellervo. Oh my goodness, I totally did. Im so sorry. Then forget my comment about that. Geeze. I feel bad now. 😞
@Jeannie patterson I totally thought that cocoa butter was beeswax. 🤦🏻♀️ I should have looked again before I said it.
@@heatherprescott6811 Don't feel bad, no big deal🤗
Sarah as always a wonderful , relaxing and inspiring video to watch, I almost hate it when it comes to an end LOL! For me 28% Coconut oil would be too drying for my dry man's skin ,but do you find the coconut cream offsets that problem? or was it a high SF? Glad its not only me that forget to add something sometimes! Thank you as always and please keep them coming.
That is so nice of you, thank you so much🤗 Personally, I don’t have a problem with coconut oil. The coconut cream does up the superfat (from 5% originally) so it does make the soap more gentle and less drying. Hehe for sure😄
you could always lower the percentage of coconut oil and increase the percentage of one of the other oils (I'd go with shea since it's a solid oil like coconut and is very moisturizing), and/or increase the superfat. of course if you do this, you have to run it thru a soap calc to get the new lye amount
Thank u ☺️
super!
good job 👏
Amazing, very well explained without talking all the time. Thank god! also do you spray alcohol at all to your soaps to avoid soda ash?
Thank you so much Juliana😊 No I don't spray alcohol, I have tried it but it didn't work for me
This looks awesome! Does the Olive Oil need to be infused with Alkanet Root? If not, does the recipe amount need to be adjusted? Also, if I wanted to add colour mica, at what stage would I add the colourants and/or fragrances in? Thank you
Thank you! No that's just an extra step I tried for fun😊 The recipe is listed in the description box and can be used as is, colors and fragrances can be added at trace!
Such a lovely soap inshalla I will make it love shehla auntie from lahore Pakistan 🇵🇰
Great video, i love your soap recipes 😊 I wonder if i can replace Citric Acid for Lactic Acid/Ascorbic Acid, or will it not work? Thank you so much. Saludos desde España 🇪🇸
Thank you😊 No that won't work..
Great video, thank you for sharing. Does the citric acid help with the resistance of the soap? I don't want to use palm oil but find that almost every soap without it has a lot of resistance on the first couple of uses, and I personally haven't found a perfect replacement for palm oil but any suggestions are welcomed. Thank you!
Some say citric acid lovers the ph of the soap others say it doesn't, it will however consume a bit of the lye so the soap will have a higher superfat and feel more gentle compared to the same recipe without citric acid. Citric acid reduces soap scum and makes the soap better to use if you have hard tap water.
I never used palm oil myself so I can't really help with that, babassu is the closest but that comes from an other palm grown in the same region as regular palm oil so I think it might not be good to use either. Lard or tallow is supposed to be close too, but are ofc animal products and not everyone would like to use that.
@@awarose thank you so much!
I'm not sure, I haven't really had that problem. Maybe you need to up the amount of oils that are high in palmitic acid. Cocoa butter is quite high in palmitic as well as animal fats as @awa rose said. Some soft oils like rice bran oil and avocado oil are also relatively high in palmitic acid😊
You can use RSPO / ISPO certificated palm oil
Hi … I absolutely love love love your videos … I was wondering if it’s necessary to gel the soap… can I just stick it in the fridge to skip that process. I always have the worst soda ash formation and only partial gelled soap bars
Thank you so much!! Yes that's totally fine😊
Thank you so much! You have single handily made my hopes of making soaps a possibility! I’d love to know if I can use tallow, lard or other oils in this? I hav been purchasing these items in hopes of making this my winter project here in Alaska! We don’t get out much. 😅😅
Hi. Thanks for the content. Just wondering where you purchase your oils and herbs from?
Beautiful, as usual. I have one question: I bought a liquid dye for my soaps. When should I add it, and what amount or percentage is advisable? Thank you so much
Thank you🤗 I have never used liquid dyes for soap, so I can't really say. Maybe the supplier would have some guidelines?
@@tellervo. I'll ask them and get back when I have the information.
Applauses.
🥰🥰
I have a question about the coconut cream. Should I only be using the cream itself and not the liquid in the can?
Aww, I too have made an alkanet soap. You know what's the worst thing the morphing of the wine colour to that greyish purple colour. But the soap is still awesome to use. 😀
I know, it's a little sad to see that beautiful red go😄
@@tellervo. Hmm
Beautiful video and recipe. Do you have an alternitive for the alkanet Root powder? Thank you so much
Thank you so much😊 If you want a natural purple, maybe brazilian purple clay? But it can of course be left out or substituted with any color that you like!
Came for the recipe - stayed for the asmr
Is there anything I can substitute the cocoa butter with?
May I ask what you like about alkanet root? I have never heard of it. Thank you again. Your soaps are stunning.
As always, great video!
Question: Is it okay to use only one essential oil for fragrance?
Thank you so much😊 Yes that’s okay!
@@tellervo. Thanks for the response! Last question, what is the ideal percentage of essential oil should add?
@@AB-xo8nh It really depends on the essential oil, you should always check at your supplier🙂 Some can only be used at very small quantities!
Hi! Do you use refined coconut oil, shea and cocoa butters?Thank you!
I am so much inspired with your videos. Can we add sodium lactate along with citric acid?
Thank you🤗 sure!
I will make this receipe, I guess nothing happens if I use caléndula instead if alkanet? 🙈 I dont know what it is and I think can’t get it here locally. You are the BEST soap maker 👏👏 Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge
Aw thank you so much!! Yes that's totally fine, alkanet is just something I tried for color😊
Beautiful! What size are the mold you use? In the description you only have the individual. Thanks
It's a 900 gram mold, it should be in the description box too🙂
I like this demonstration. You said you left the fragrance out. If I wanted to put a fragrance in what stage would I put the fragrance please.
your pretty cool. good stuff
What is the brand of the coconut oil that you use? I like those packages but I can't find them online.
Lovely soap making process...I haven't seen anyone using citric acid in youtube and always wondered about it...thanx for the info❤️...also was wondering if I can add sodium lactate to this recepie or will it not work?.Thanx in advance
Thank you so much🥰 Yes you can add sodium lactate!
Hello dear Sara
I’m start watching your amazing videos
I’m from Angola and o love your amazing work and the way you explain 🌸
O start now in this soap world and tried to do your recepies can you tell me if I can change the grape seed oil for another ? I don’t have this here
Tank you and wish you the best 🌸🍃
When you say you kept the soap warm for 12 hours, did you just leave it alone with a cloth over it? Or is there a certain way to keep it warm while it sets? Love your videos! Thank you for making them(:
I put it in the oven where I try to keep the temperature at about 30-40 degrees celsius. Thank you😊
I was just going to comment.. I poured the batter into individual moulds and they partially gelled, should I have cpop'd them? Or put them in the fridge to not gel?!
Thanks for your videos. While watching your videos, I have a question. Why do you add citric acid, before melting lye in the distilled water?
Absolutely adore watching all videos, l have a question about the citric acid, is it necessary to up the amount of lye if adding citric acid?
Yes, you can run it through soapcalc. Citric acid changes your amount of lye.
Thank you Dora🤗 It’s not a must, just know that your superfat will be higher than what you have calculated it to be.
@@tellervo. Thank you for such a speedy replied!
Hii! Thanks so much for this! I was wondering what could replace alkanet root? I cannot find any near me😵💫
I am in love with your videos . However I had a question regarding the recipe. The instructions say 240g of Olive Oil but the description says 192g. I really want to try this but I want to use the correct amount
Good
Hi! Thankyou for another beautiful video, I have tried this recipe (yet to finish curing) but had a cheeky test, lovely lather, and I used himalayan rhubarb infused oil (20g)its like peach on steroids!! You mention changing the oils on different batches is this just the grape seed component? ie. Hemp, almond oil, rice bran, avacado.. Would I need to soap calc if I used one of these to replace the grape seed oil? And how did they change the finished soap.. I suppose Id better start using your soap formulating book that I bought! 😁🌿
That's great, himalayan rhubarb is really beautiful😊
Yes, I meant the grapeseed oil, all of the oils you mention would work. You'd have to try them all out to see the differences, some of them would be very similar. If you want you can look at the oil chart in the workbook and choose an oil with a similar fatty acid composition for a similar result. But run it through a lye calculator to be safe🙂
Wow! I am looking at trying my 1st soap ever and I saw your video. Please which oil can be replaced with the grape seed oil?
You can just add more olive oil for example, but the recipe has to be recalculated with a lye calculator🙂
What is the total oil weight of this recipe? I may have missed if it's noted. For example, does the recipe make a 1 pound (I think that may be 500 in grams if I'm not mistaken) batch?
Oil weight is 600 g🙂
Hello, thank you for this video. I’m making this today and just seeking clarification on the amount of infused olive oil. The written recipe states 192g, but the video states 240g. Thank you!
I made the infusion with 240 g olive oil, but used 192 g for the recipe☺️
Thank u so much . Question why do you have to wait 4-6 week to use ?
During the cure the soap will just get much better; it will get much harder and longer lasting + more mild and gentle and the lather will also get better😊
@@tellervo. thank u ❤️
Your video is so calming. I can feel my blood pressure go down AND I learn something. You are just too fabulous.
@@zeldasmith6154 That makes me so happy!
Hi there, I put the recipe into soapee and got water weight 135g and not sure what went wrong. I entered everything except for the coconut cream. Is that what's changing the water weight? Will less water, 125g, makes harder soap? Thanks.
If I double the recipe, can I literally just double it? I know that sounds like a silly question, but i'm asking just to make sure there isn't some weird math when it comes to the lye and citric acid and water mix. So for instance it would be
250 grams distilled water
20 grams citric acid
179.6 grams lye
correct?
Thanks!
What is a good oil to replace for grapeseed as I'm allergic to grapeseed oil?
Jojoba oil, Avacado oil
Great video🙂. What can we add instead of coconut cream??
Thank you so much, you can replace it with a milk for example😊
Thankyou so much
How did you keep it warm before taking it out the mold?
I put it in the oven on very low heat🙂
I'm confused about the recipe you posted. I imputed the information on Soapee and it told me the water weight was 104.8g (not 125) and the lye was 69.9g (not 83.8) without any citric acid. I dont understand why there is difference?
Does the root make the soap that color. Can I add kaline clay?
Yes, sure
I cannot get the alkanet root in South Africa. Is it just used for the colour. Could I maybe use beetroot powder
What a lovely video! Do you have someone filming you or do you move the camera to different locations? Some people say that soap made with tallow lasts longer and is more luxurious than oil soaps. Do you know if that is true? I've never made soap but would like to try.
Thank you so much! It's just me so I move the camera to different locations🙂 I think it depends but you can achieve pretty similar results with butters that have similar fatty acid profiles
