I saw Blossom at Danny's three times. She never lost her gift, up until the very end. Her piano playing was still as perfect and odd, and her delivery of a lyric was always as masterful. Even the non sequiturs between songs got better over the years, more mysterious and hilarious. A total artist. Rest her soul.
Blossom Dearie. One of a kind. A nightlife treasure. Glad I got to see her several times at The Ballroom & Danny's. She was & is an original - in every way.
Been a fan since 1962 when I lived in DC area and a Washington DC Radio DJ played her music, Charlie Bird and other greats. I re-embarked on music career in 1965 after music career with my sister as child singers.
God, it's staggering. No sign of aging in her voice, not a quiver - she would have been 72 here. Consider the differences between the flash/trash that gets up on stage these days and a real musician. BTW, who can name the song jingle/soundtrack for a TV commercial; that she did in the 60s? ... ... it was White Rain shampoo. It was hearing that special voice and a Stereo Review record review that turned me on to her Sleep warm, Blossom.
"I believe in star signs and I believe in film romances I believe in fantasy and I believe with just one glance he's crazy for my eyes 'cause I believe the lies of handsome men I believe in witchcraft and I believe in Cinderella I believe in gypsies and I believe I cast a spell that sends him to the skies 'cause I believe the lies of handsome men Somewhere in the corner of my mind I'm not a fool, completely blind But even though he's hooked me on his line I find the pleasure's been mine I believe in love songs, they seem to know just what I'm feeling I believe in Prince Charming I never guess he's double dealing How my spirits rise Believing in the lies of handsome men Sometimes in a dark and quiet place the truth and I meet face to face And even if his highness disappears I keep some sterling souvenirs So, I believe in heroes and I expect that happy ending wishing on some rainbow I pretend he's not pretending Someday I'll get wise but right now I need the lies of handsome men"
I miss her. Just reading Marlene Verplanck's obit, another I'll miss. But - oh, Blossom! With her thoughtful appearances at reasonable hours on Sunday evenings.
Re: comment below... I know there are lots of posts of Blossom on youtube, but they don't show her at her best. Does anyone have video from the Ballroom days in Chelsea?
I fell in love with her when I first saw her back in the 60s at Ronnie Scots . I have always remained faithful. I love her now even more.

Friendlier, you're a lucky person. I did not discover her soon enough to have such a privilege.

A magnificent artiste until the very end.
True artistry and genius. Striving to be a tenth of an artist as she was.

Hire’s Root Beer!
This song is on the final album - "Blossom's Planet." And splendid it is too!
The seminal version of this song!
"I believe in star signs
and I believe in film romances
I believe in fantasy
and I believe with just one glance he's crazy for my eyes
'cause I believe the lies of handsome men
I believe in witchcraft
and I believe in Cinderella
I believe in gypsies
and I believe I cast a spell that sends him to the skies
'cause I believe the lies of handsome men
Somewhere in the corner of my mind
I'm not a fool, completely blind
But even though he's hooked me on his line
I find the pleasure's been mine
I believe in love songs,
they seem to know just what I'm feeling
I believe in Prince Charming
I never guess he's double dealing
How my spirits rise
Believing in the lies of handsome men
Sometimes in a dark and quiet place
the truth and I meet face to face
And even if his highness disappears
I keep some sterling souvenirs
So, I believe in heroes
and I expect that happy ending
wishing on some rainbow
I pretend he's not pretending
Someday I'll get wise
but right now I need the lies of handsome men"
