Aattam, Bramayugam, Premalu, Manjummel Boys, Aadujeevitham (The Goat Life). Already 5 very interesting Malayalam films this year. Please do check them out when you get a chance. Also if you do get Aavesham (from the director of Romancham) and Vineeth Sreenivasan’s Varshangalku Shesham (director of Hridayam) in theatres near you, please do try to check them out. Both release tomorrow.
In Indian societies, divorce gets taken up by the public. You will get an opinion/advice from many people. Especially in smaller towns where people know each other.
It maybe legal now but it's still stigmatized, it's not easy for homosexual people to live a normal life in India. The society with all it's religous norm has shaped a homophobic dominant society/culture.
I agree with you but homophobia as a word is an all encompassing thing especially to western audiences. afaik homophobia is one of shame and guilt here in India rather than "I wanna kill gay people" like its elsewhere. Not saying shame and guilt arent part of that too, but its different and I'm not sure how to properly explain it.
Mammootty has lost many fans in Kerala, especially being a muslim because he did this movie. But he simply does not care. Like a true actor and cinephile, he plays anything despite his personal preferences. It is still very prevalent in kerala to use homosexuality as an insult. Same with most parts of india. For a superstar to do such a role that might end up in making him lose his core audience is something no superstar would think about. He probably produced this because he didn't get anyone confident enough to spend the money on such a topic. He spent the money and the movie was a hit. Now that is bravery.
@@Melphile___123 it's not nonsense, kid. Many boomers who support traditional values have said in social media that they won't be fans of him anymore. You can research it yourself. Muslim organisation WhatsApp/Facebook groups had really insulting stuff to say about him while this movie released.
Beautiful review. Mammootty can make me cry even in a mass masala movie. But, his performance in Kathal was something else. In every frame, you can feel the love and acceptance for different human conditions from the crew. ❤
The rainbow in the end... Appears too much :) In defence of the makers of the movie, it rains a lot in Kerala and it is also sunny- rainbows are quite common :) Section 377 - a colonial legacy- was first repealed in 2009 by a Indian high court. The ruling was overturned in 2013 by the highest court of the land- and then repealed for good by the same court in 2018.
Divorce trials are open to public unless the court decides to make it private - maybe if there is something sensitive invloving a child. Mutual consent divorces are usually done without a trial, so those would be sort of private.
Hi guys, thanks for reviewing the movie. The pronounsation is 'kaathal', a tamil word that means love. Due to a hand injury and being at home for a month as sick leave, I have watched all the 7 good Malayalam movies released recently. Kaathal, Bramayugham, Anweshippin Kandethum, Premalu, Aattam, Manjummal Boys, and the Goat Life. Somehow, I would like to rate 'Aattam' as the best one followed by Bramayugam and Manjummal Boys. I felt the home back scenes in Goatlife spoiling the mood of the viewers. But all are good movies and worth a watch.
Kaathal means "core portion of something" in malayalam......eg:- if you cut a tree and observe the wood there is 2 portions in it....one is white portion and the other is red portion.....no one use white portion to make furniture..... everyone use the red portion called "kaathal" to make furniture 😅😅
@Sheru_10 thanks for making me remember that word. But the real Malayalam word is 'Kaazhthal', which means the 'core or essence'. I'm not very sure what the director meant by the name. Maybe love or the core, else both.
Really good movie and reallly good review. Sort of envy you that you didn't know the core issue of the film before watching it. After the film I was wondering how I would follow the story knowing nothing. As an European was also wondering why the divorce trial was public with such sensitive issues discussed. Ending was in parts almost too joyful for me.
Actually most trials are open to the public and press. The judge does rule sometimes that the proceedings will be 'in camera' that means no outsider allowed. It is usually with sexual abuse cases especially involving minors.
I am sure it is not unique to India. But legally right and socially acceptable don't always coincide in fact they can be very different too. I can give one or two instances but then my comment will become an essay.
Jimmy actually the article 377 was the legacy of the British. This doesn't meam I am absloving us Indians. Of course even after Independence governments didn't really do anything . They didn't have the guts. They didn't want to lose their votebank. Homosexuality was not really stigmatized in ancient Indian society. But a century of Muslim rule followed by nearly 2 centuries of British rule changed all that.
Love 👏 this 👏 movie 👏

Fun fact : the scene that broke you down Jimmy , the talk between the son and father , is an improv scene 😅
Jimmy, the way you say 'Malayalam' is perfect. Not ignoring the actual review. Review is on point too!
Thanks!
You'll get the copy of advocate 's notice .. trial is open . Third party can attend. May be if you request you get a private trial.
Finally an 8 from Jimmy. There is God!!

I liked the intro by Buddymeister

Your review was subtle and beautiful like the movie. Suits well.
Thank you.
Love this review ❤ for a beautiful, sensitive and well made movie. I really liked the still performances in this film.

‘Kaathal’ in Malayalam means the ‘core/essence’. In Tamil it means ‘love’. It is a play on the word with both languages in mind.

Parents have said they rather hear their son is dead than they are gay. And society also think like that and may even make that happen.
