Did you ever read "The Halloween Tree" by Ray Bradbury?
That book is sort of in the fantasy genre, a group of young boys head to a house reputed to be haunted, but there's a skeletal tree outside that is adorned with many jack-o-lanterns. An old man answers the door and tells them that their costumes mean something at this time of year, and takes them on a fantastical journey to discover the meaning of Halloween. In the process, they find out that one of their number (who was sick that night) was seriously ill, and the only way the other boys can save his life is to give the old man one year of each of their lives..... It's a thinner book, wouldn't take long to read, I'd recommend it for this time of year. It might be considered a "young adult" book, it's kinda lyrical though and I don't know any teens that would read it these days, also I think it might freak out a kid young enough to read to. I don't know that it would be worth it to buy the book, but I'd bet you could check it out of the library. Hope you can enjoy.
