Difference in velocity. Liberty is an ammo sponsor for my reviews. While chatting with my rep, he told me that 2000fps was the PROJECTED velocity, and they had their boxes printed and shipped before their final tests came in at 2100fps+. They decided to package their ammo with the lesser fps, since people usually aren't upset with a better than stated performance.
So, no, your chrono is not off, the ammo is just hotter than what's printed on the box.
It seems like companies that underestimate their ammo's velocity are the exception.

You have adjustable sights, don't you? Practice is practice, adjust your sights if it is that big a deal. I just shoot 2 groups, if that is the case. With the zeroes group the carry ammo. Concentrate on group size (trigger control...) not where it hits at in this situation. If its 4" to the right and low, big deal, that's not going to hurt the stuff you are using when needed, which will be dead on.
@@thatguy22441 iirc years ago were complaints about the early batches of their HV ammo that the velocity was 5-10% lower than advertised, so I think this might have been to address that.
Better to under state velocity than over state it. They do this with expiration dates on food. Obviously the food lasts longer than what's on the package or can. But they wanted to play it safe.

You may never read this because it’s four years old, but you are absolutely the go to guy when it comes to making a decision with ammunition and firearms. Thanks for an informative video. I carry 9mm Liberty Defence ammo (60 rounds G45). You caught most of the high points, chief being how easy it is to carry. I use a modern red dot sight on my firearm which makes the POI a non-issue for me.
The big parts you missed is A. This ammo produces the same or similar effects after cutting through level 3A body Armour (thats 30 layers of ballistic Kevlar) whereas your standard 9mm can only penetrate 5-6 layers.
Also, it has practically zero drop at 100 yards, which makes it ideal for use on a farm for varmint control or for mountain lions or bobcats etc.
This ammo makes your sidearm the closest thing to having a rifle on your hip.
Has somebody actually tested this with ballistics gel or something covered in 3A Armor? IK it can penetrate it but I always imagined it would loose a good bit of energy in the process & maybe be mishapen from the impact so it mightn’t fragment the way it’s supposed to

@@Teboski78 I've seen loads of folks state they tested the .40 and 9mm civil defense and both went through 3A no issue.
This is my warmer weather carry ammo. (In the winter, due to heavier amounts of clothing worn, I carry 115gr Critical Defense loads) I read a 1st hand account of their performance against feral hogs, and it was impressive. Imagine shooting a bad guy in the chest with a rabid blender. Considering the distance most personal defence shootings take place at, the deviation from point of aim will be minimal at worst.

I do the same. Summer ammo for me. Winter time, I use the 150gr micro federal HST.
That's thoughtful. I hadn't considered that. Going thru all my defense ammo right now pre winter up in the north. That is a valid consideration. Not Tshirt weather anymore.

Buy some. I'd start with a 22 long rifle. One rifle and one revolver. There is no kick. Practice good safety and fundamentals. Then you're off and running. Have fun.
This is the correct channel to learn from. No bullshit, factual content that let's you make up your own mind.
Check out what they do to armor too. These things are amazing, they will stop a modern home invader without killing your kids or neighbors in an apartment building, just don't miss.
It is amazing how many people worry about over penetration hurting a innocent bystander, but not missing the target and hitting a bystander. epic logic some have.

I realize this video is over 3 years old but I need to say that this is the most comprehensive test I have seen. I’ve seen gel tests of these bullets but this one hands down beats those. I got some for my .45 acp 1911 HDW and look forward to testing them on the range. High price point but I hope they are accurate so I can use them. The lack of over penetration make me happy and adds security to my weapon. Thanks.

I love the look on his face when he reports the first velocity that was 115 feet per second higher than the box... Not often seen a bullet that is Faster than the stated box velocity. It didn't rain on Paul for this video, so we have to discount that... :)

I went to the local sporting goods box store today in search of some 9mm ammo, and this is all they have in stock. I had never heard of it before so didn't buy any. Came home to do some research, and lo and behold, my favorite RUclips personality has an extremely comprehensive review. Thanks!! P.S. - I'll never get tired of the meat target.
Everyone needs to watch Paul just to see the level of trigger and muzzle discipline that should be trained and ingrained in everyone with a firearm. That disciple is like brakes on a car, sometimes it's more prudent to know when to slow down and stop than to stomp the gas. I've watched a few gun channels where the INFO and SHOOTING was good but they were sweeping themselves and everyone around them without even thinking about it. Watched a guy the other night cup his hand over the barrel twice before a safety check, then WHEN he checked it WAS loaded.

Thank you Mr. Harrell for your careful testing of various brands/types of pistol ammunition commonly used for HD/PD. It is beyond the ability of many folks to buy and test the many various choices on the market. Your testing allows one to make a rational choice based on actual results in common firearms. Those guns look really fun, but being black powder(save maybe the .303 chamberings) they seem like actually being able to shoot them would be a labor of love and esoteric hand loading.
Over penetration is VERY high on my lisylt because I have a wife and 5 kids at home. Great video, thank you for your great observations. Making me think.

@@GrumpyGenXGramps hi. Yes. But I don't dive too deep into it. It's effective and light. Odds of using your ccw almost zero. Odds of carrying your ccw high. Odds of an effective round that weighs less improving your daily carry comfort high. Figured it's worth a shot to try out. Oh and if he doesn't condemn a "hyper" ammo that is rare and interesting :)
@@GrumpyGenXGramps I think by "he actually likes" is that he has solid reasons for recommending it. Even with the change in trajectory, if you were to resight your weapon for that specific ammo then the only downside is the cost.

Military arms channel did a test on the 9mm Liberty civil defense.. on level 3 soft body armor.. the Liberty civil defense sailed right through it!!

I don't know about the CCP M2, but I can say from experience the CCP does not like them. I loaded 2 mags full of this ammo and all but one of them were FTE. Unfortunately, I don't think this ammo is compatible with the gas delayed blowback system of that particular firearm.

Honestly I think it would get similar or maybe even less velocity because of barrel drag. I assume these use a ridiculously fast burning powder, and seeing that these get over 2k fps, they probably do a good job of burning almost all of it even out of a pistol length barrel.
A guy on RUclips claimed that he got 3000+ FPS from 10mm 60gr version of this ammo… that’s from 16 inch carbine…. Pretty much rifle performance.

MrEdgy Per Federal’s experts, exceeding 2,200 FPS is when hydrostatic shock starts and temporary wound cavities become tissue damage. 5.5”-6” barrel on a 65gr .357 Sig, and I think you may have a rifle my friend. I want one too!
BL y I saw that video, too. Kinda made me change my whole outlook on the “caliber wars.” Good stuff and very informative hearing what the manufacturers really had to say since they weren’t marketing any particular product. Just simple unbiased information straight from the people who spend all day every day designing and testing ammo.
@@bly4233 late but Liberty 357 sig is advertised at 2300fps. The Harrels test proved anything, there's a very high probability of the ammo atleast reaching it's advertised velocity which is incredibly rare. That's rifle round speed coming out of a handgun 🤤.
@@jonathonbridges9625 granted the bullet designs are different, but .357sig civil defense traveling at about 2400fps (ish) is not far off from 5.56 55gr traveling at 2500fps (again, "ish") from a MK18.
NOT an apples to apples comparison, but as far as weight and velocity go they're not terribly dissimilar.
Security contractor here, as Paul stated having a belt full of mags with this stuff has saved my waist and lower back, and of course it makes holes in stuff.
I bought some .45 Civil before ammo crisis and now it is some of the only stuff at the range. I watched this video and bought more. Now I need some in .357, .38, .9mm.....

I was curious what your take would be on this ammo. People treat this stuff like it's some kind of freakin' miracle. I admit its performance is good, but not enough better to justify its cost, reputation, and scarcity. This is just my opinion of course. I was actually thinking about sending you a couple boxes so you could test it, but it looks like someone beat me to it. Thanks for the video and keep it up!
My problem with it is, once all the fragments have torn away. You're left with a little copper disc of what 20 grains, that acts much like a 22 or a 556 below the yaw velocity threshold. Way too gimmicky for me. Think I'll stick with the stuff that has consistently worked for near a decade with the data to back it up.
As far as this genera of ammo goes, it is impressive. Especially if you believe that you'll have to be shooting through body armor. I'm glad somebody actually tried to simulate a human torso with this stuff. Weird stuff happens when you hit bones. I wouldn't fault anyone for considering to carry thing because it is so lightweight and low recoil.
With the 10mm, I had case cracks with factory glock barrels. I discontinued it.

There are tests on youtube and it's nasty. It is like this but on steroids
I need to take classes from Paul,the man just knows his guns,and truly retain the information learned from him the Manis just "The Man".
I carried this brand but in 45acp while bouncing at a bar. I liked the weight and made the gun almost feel unloaded like weight. Its LOUD, expensive, and point of impact can be off. I reconsidered after essentially realizing if the bad guy takes any sort of barrier or cover...you arent going to reach him through it with this ammo. A chair or table would be an issue, whereas a standard JHP would easily penetrate it no issue. Also, window glass will most likely defeat or deflect this round. I ended with Winchester Ranger T's as they are the SUPREME carry round for the .45acp.

People are still in the old school mindset of pass threw. One day and it is slowly happening people will realize that when the bullet through design stops in a target, that means all of the kinetic energy is left where you want it in the target. That doesn't mean weak ammo it is about bullet design. That is the kind of bullets I search for. They have great power and performance, but are designed to stop in a target and dump all of the energy in the target. I use to have to make my own bullets to achieve this, but manufacturers are starting to get the idea.

Mac from Military Arms did a great video on this stuff a couple years back. It went clean through Level III hard body armor, and still did massive damage to a clay block behind the armor. It really is impressive ammunition, buy like Paul I also fond that it shoots about 3" low at 10 yds.
A hard fart can do massive damage to a clay block he should have used ballistic soap in that test.

I personally like the idea of light fragmenting rounds in a concealable pistol such as a Ruger EC9. I would seriously doubt the engagement distance would exceed 20feet in a self defense or home defense situation. And, even though pass through collateral casualties are quite rare, I'm pleased that this ammunition further diminishes that chance.
Okay 2 years later, I understood the muzzle velocity test, as it is not taken from 1" from the muzzle. It is usually yards away as tested. I'm banking Mr. Harrell can't tell me how to build a 500 HP LS engine. On the same token, I sure as hell can't tell him how to shoot any kind of firearm, I'm getting better, but I'm not what you would call, An Expert. Very good info, Sir, keep em coming!!!!!

@@macalpha4099 have you tried these rounds out? If you can get ahold of them I highly recommend getting 2 boxes. It's hard not to shoot them all.
Used this ammo for the last 5-6 years, never had an accuracy or any other problem with it. Definitely my go-to for personal carry.
The ammo is also a frangible round designed specifically for self defense. It’s not made for long distance, outside of 10 yards or so, shooting. It’s designed to basically come apart on contact and create multiple wound channels and to not over-penetrate. This makes it safer for self-defense particularly in crowded areas or condo/apartment housing situations where this could be a catastrophic problem if a round carried through a wall into someone else’s living unit.

IIRC Liberty Civil Defense is rated on a 4 inch barrel (Glock 19) A 92F has a 5 inch barrel, your chronograph is fine.

Hey Paul, being that you routinely demonstrate using your Colt 1911 and 92FS, both military standard issue in their time, have you given any thought to adding the P320/M17 to the collection? I'd be interested in your opinion on this as it is being rolled out ;)
Two months ago, I was doing IT work for the Army Criminal Investigation Division in Quantico and they all have P320's. The earlier drop fire issues have been resolved and it is a fine shooting weapon.

I’ve found that aim deviation consistent with my guns. I carry this but only in my compact and Subcompact handguns. Good review as usual.
The burglar was surprised when the high velocity ammunition ruptured his grapefruits. He gurgled in surprise.
This makes for great home defense ammo where wall penetration is a very high concern.
I would expect the one-shot knock-down potential of the 2100 fps 9mm hollow point to be ASTRONOMICAL.

I been using this for about a year now in my home defense guns. I did get it on sale mitigating the price somewhat and I did zero the guns and practice, making sure it would cycle and feed properly. I was just considering changing because it remains pretty much unproven. I had anticipated the results you just got...While on sale I purchased a few boxes of their .223 ammo anticipating similar results. I have tested it for precision and feeding which it passed with flying colors. I suppose I need a meat target? Thanks for all you do! Best YT channel about firearms ever!

I have this ammo for .380, 9mm, .38 special, .357 magnum. these are not supposed to penatrate over 12 inches. awesome video for this ammo.
The Military Arms Channel published a video in which they tested Liberty Civil Defense 9mm ammo on Level IIIA body armor, and it zipped right through it, no problem. Velocity is definitely the key to penetrating body armor, as most of us know, and it looks like this ammo can do it.
A corporal in the Capt. Obvious battalion here- If this word gets around to the wrong people (statist supremacist political types) they'll demand that it'll should be banned with all 'assault weapons'. Even logical demonstrations that this type of ammo could save innocents from accidental over penetration injuries, their 'reason' circuits are non-functional.
Wish it were cheaper to run in carbines ... I'd like to try this bullet in a .350 legend case
