It's August 1943 and future president, John F. Kennedy is the Commander of the US patrol torpedo boat PT-109. He was participating in a hunt for the famous "Tokyo Express" - Japanese destroyers operating in the Solomon Islands that carried supplies to the island garrisons during the cover of night. While on this mission his boat was rammed by a Japanese destroyer. As his boat was torn apart he managed to save the majority of his crew and make his way home. Several months later Kennedy and his men risked their lives again, going to the rescue of marines trapped on Choiseul Island.

This Kennedy Boat is in War Thunder! Isn’t it?
Some more points of interest. JFK's crew 'acquired' a 37mm Anti-tank cannon to mount on their boat. They found it to be effective enough to replace it with the 37mm autocannon from an Aircobra fighter. Which THAT proved so effective it became standard armament for every PT boat afterwards.
Strategically Transferred Equipment to an Alternate Location.

They neglected to mention that JFK actually kept that coconut with the distress message on his desk in the White House.
wow thanks for the info. I want to see that now that I read your comment!
As I recall it is now in the JFK museum.
Winslow!!!!
There's also the fact that the natives who rescued JFK were actually invited to his inauguration, but the island authorities decided that they were not "appropriate" enough and straight-up prevented them from going. It rather irks me off
@@craggleshenaniganseh JFK came to presidency when systematic racism was still pretty widespread, he made major strives in civil rights before and after his death. So even though they couldn’t be present he helped to ensure that it’d be more achieve-able in the future. He was huge on posterity and great at it.

I would love it if Yarnhub did a video on the Monchy 9 of Newfoundland. 9 men of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment positioned at Monchy-le-Preux during the Battle of Arras in 1917 hid behind shrubbery and defended the town from a German force anywhere from 200 - 300 men strong for 11 hours to prevent a German break through. I think it is a very cool and very underrated battle that sounds like the plot of a movie.

Amagiri was the head of a column of four Japanese destroyers, Amagiri, Hagikaze, Arashi and Shigure. Hagikaze, Arashi, and Shigure opened fire on "two burning torpedo boats", which was just the halves of PT-109. Tameichi Hara was the captain of Shigure and wrote about the encounter in his book "Japanese Destroyer Captain".
Everyone should read his book. Thank God he was the exception to the rule of Japanese skippers or the U.S. would have lost way more ships
information from wikipedia:
PT-109 was an 80-foot Elco PT boat (patrol torpedo boat) last commanded by Lieutenant (junior grade) John F. Kennedy, future United States president, in the Solomon Islands campaign of the Pacific theater during World War II. Kennedy's actions in saving his surviving crew after PT-109 was rammed and sunk by a Japanese destroyer earned him several commendations and made him a war hero. Back problems stemming from the incident required months of hospitalization at Chelsea Naval Hospital and plagued him the rest of his life. Kennedy's postwar campaigns for elected office referred often to his service on PT-109.

The rescue of JFK and crew was entirly down to one Australian Coastwatcher Reg Evans and two Solomon Islander men, their job was to operate behind Japanese lines and report on enemy troop and naval movements by SW radio. He watched the sinking at night and sent two of his Solomon Islander men to investigate, they returned with the coconut and Reg passed the co ordinates on. Reg survived the war, so JFK entertained and thanked Reg personaly at the White House.
Coastwatchers were spread across the Pacific and operated in secret until after the war.
A total of 33 Australian and 22 Islander people Coastwatchers were killed by the Japanese.
US Admiral of the Fleet, William F. Halsey, World War II
"The Coastwatchers saved Guadalcanal, and Guadalcanal saved the South Pacific".
Very touching moments for the late president. It's sad to see he was assassinated in such a way, but also good to see how he had always been a good leader, leading his men out of miseries and tragedies. His speech scenes in the story are all tear-inspiring. Thank you so much for the story, not to mention the resemblance of his look really bring it to the point!
It pisses me off to no end. JFK Did so much for our country. Only to be betrayed by his very own country, by the most corrupted officials...
Had JFK lived on and not be assassinated?! Our country would be a paradise! Or at least the most ideal Nation in the world. But alas! We are now a laughingstock of a shell of a nation...(Sorry for the rant. But I needed to vent it all out.)
I don’t think JFK would say “things could be worse” after two of his crewmen died, but good video haha
In March 2015, in Tokyo, the "JFK: His life and legacy" exhibition was held, where Caroline Kennedy, JFK's daughter, and Kazuko Hanami, wife of the captain of the destroyer that collided with the boat, met and confirmed the partnership between Japan and the U.S.
At the exhibition, a letter sent by JFK to Captain Hanami in 1953 and a photograph of him with a handwritten message "To Captain Hanami, late enemy and present friend" were displayed. The two had been corresponding, and letters of encouragement were sent from Captain Hanami and former crew members of the destroyer when JFK ran for president. This was featured in the official magazine "American View" of the U.S. Embassy in Japan.

The Solomon Islander that found Kennedy named his son after him and then his son did the same thing. I seen an interview with them both on a die wreck channel on YT. True story
I knew that JFK had been a PT boat captain during WW2, but wow, I had never heard the full story!
One story I still want to see here is about Danilo Marques Moura, a Brazilian pilot who was shot down and seriously injured in 1945, but decided to walk through Italy to the nearest Brazilian air base, almost 400km away.
There was a Brazilian air force base in Europe in 1945? Never knew that.
@@paulreilly3904 Brazil fought in Italy between 1944 and 1945, and the Brazilian air force had one airbase in Pisa
This version of the story was highly embellished. Reality was much different but then again the real story wouldn't have been as interesting to watch.
What a fine video of my very good friend Jack K and the story about him and his PT109.....I am in my late 80's....Thanks Yarnhub......

I was shocked at the number of people who went into the Navy without knowing how to swim. They got remedial pool instruction and had to pass a very basic swim test
I enlisted in the Navy before HS graduation in 1976. And, in fact I was a good swimmer, yet had to sign an affidavit testifying as such. Nevertheless, all including myself of about 75 men in Company 334 @ Orlando were instructed in basic swimming, treading water & drown-proofing techniques. I recall about 7 or 10% had to march in the evening after classes & drills & report to the Swimming Pool for remedial lessons. I don't remember if the remedial class rejoined as a whole company for the advanced drown-proofing lessons; the hardest requirement being to have enough confidence & skill to not panic.
That transition to the sponsor was so clean!

I cannot begin to describe the satisfaction i felt for all the hard work you put in this video Yarnhub, well done. As always you outdid yourself. I really loved the perspective of the soon-to-be 35th president of the United States and the occational shift into the Japanese perspective. Kennedy proved himself to be a real soldier and man when he saved his men and those marines, may he rest in peace🫡.
You missed the part that he kept that coconut scrap with the rescue message - on The White House office desk, no less!
During JFK’s inauguration there was a parade that included a PT boat painted to look like PT 109; many of the surviving crew “manned the boat” as part of the celebration
Jack Kennedy?!?
If I’m not mistaken, Jack is a nickname for John. Jack Lemmon for instance was born John Uhler Lemmon III.
The voices have come a long way! They feel like movies!
Also, requesting a story (sometime) on Heinrich Severloh, the german soldier who killed around a thousand Americans on Omaha, and later became friends with an American Chaplain who was shot 3 times on that very same beach, possibly from Severloh's own MG.

Much has been made in the media of Kennedy the hero who was the perfect commander and knew everything. But some of his crew told a different story about that time.
This sounds like a puff-piece...
Swimming 3.5 miles in open water is still a very admirable challenge - let alone pull an injured crew member.
His fellow commanders said same thing
He wasn’t the best
Average
Of him being the best commander ever sure. But nothing portrayed here was ever disputed as far as I am aware.
Anyone who manages to get T-boned by a destroyer obviously was not the best commander... I still can't wrap my head around this blunder. Did they forget they had a rudder? An engine?
Another slam dunk video!! I love the content you guys put out, I’ve been subscribed since the beginning. If I could change anything about this video, it would have been the accent of Kennedy. Keep up the great work @YarnHub!

Bofors 40mm firing so fast? 0:46... dunno bout that... Maybe this was some fast firing variant but the ones i've seen aren't that fast shootin'
Fellas, Kennedy had a strong Boston accent...really miss that. Entertaining, but the proper voice over would've made this 5 star.
Thank you for doing these.
Okay, it better be good. I've paused James Townsend and son to watch you guys. Hello, from detroit, michigan u s a
Same here brother, it’s looking gpod
Ok, this is a relatively minor thing, but this error has showed up before and will continue to do so as long as you're making ww2 stuff. The animation for the 40mm Bofors gun is completely wrong. It does not just blaze away like a normal machine gun, it fires slowly. (about 120 rpm) Each barrel recoils quite a lot each time it fires, usually fired in alternating sequence for multiple mounts. There's plenty of archival footage for this, or you could use your sponsor War Thunder as reference for your animators. The shells it fires are quite large, so they're good candidates for slow mo bullet shots you like to do. I know this is a nitpick, but Yarnhub has shown a consistent ability to improve and I hope this is one thing that you do improve.
Now do the British and German gunboat battling each other in the English Channel!
