- In this flight CFI Jon is providing flight instruction to a Private Pilot with instrument rating who wanted to improve his flying skills. Today we are practicing chandelles. The Chandelle is a Commercial maneuver.
CHANDELLE: Maximum Performance climbing turn, with a 180 degree change in heading, maximum gain in altitude, and rolling wings-level just above the stall speed Vs1 +/- 5 knots. (C-172SP 1.2 Vs1= 57 knots)
PERFORMANCE
STEP 1. SET-UP
Set Aircraft speed to maneuvering speed (Va= 90-105 knots)
Altitude: Greater than 1500 ft AGL
Clear the area for traffic
Establish wind direction
STEP 2. ROLL 30 DEGREE AND PITCH UP
Identify landmarks at 90 degree point and reference aircraft heading
Roll into the wind and establish a 30 degree bank, then neutralize ailerons
Begin increasing pitch add full power
Maintain coordination
STEP 3. AT 45 DEGREE POINT OF TURN
Maintain bank until aircraft reaches 90 degree point
Continue increasing pitch attitude until hitting 90 degree point
(Maximum pitch 7.5-10 degrees)
STEP 4. AT 90 DEGREE POINT OF TURN
Gradually start rolling out of turn
Continue to maintain pitch attitude
Stay coordinated
STEP 5. AT 180 DEGREE POINT
Complete rollout to wings level at the 180 degree point
Airspeed is approximately 1.2 Vs1 (57 knots)
Hold Airspeed momentarily (10 seconds) just above stall speed
Maintain coordinated flight
STEP 6. RETURN TO NORMAL FLIGHT
Resume Straight-and-Level flight with minimum altitude loss
Airspeed builds
Aircraft: Cessna 172SP with Garmin G1000
Airport: Aurora State Airport (KUAO)
