- The Toyota MR2 was a car that dominated the 90s tuner car culture. From the SW20 being tuned into 800hp monsters, to the first generation paving the way for the two-seater, mid-engineed, rear wheel drive sports car. But the least commonly talked about generation is the 3rd one known as the W30. The Midship Runabout-Sports was a different approach on the successful platform and featured a 1.8l inline-four engine. Although critics praised the car, it didn't survive which left it in a weird spot. How much is a Toyota MR2 worth? Was it fast? Were they worth it? Will Toyota ever bring it back? All fantastic questions about a car that had headlights bigger than your head.
And even though the TOyota MR2 are fantastic platforms and a great way to buy a budget sports car, you need to ask yourself if it was enough for you to pull the trigger. What're your thoughts?

@@kkkkk12122323232 some of them still are, but now in the past year or so since people started posting about it it started spiking to around $14,000, like stop posting about and just let it die back down so MR2 fans can get them for cheap and little to no competition
@@TonyCrispruby yeah, the price of it about 6 to 10 months ago was on average around 4 to 5 thousand, now it's on average between 14 and 17 and thanks to this video it'll be around 22 or higher, maybe a different forgotten import (I dare not say the name as to not give this guy or others ideas) will still be under 5 thousand by the end of this year or early next year

I own a mk1a 85 mr2 literally first gen, best driving experience I've ever had
Mrs is one of the best handling car. It responds so quick with little input, makes a great competition for miata, s2000 and boxter. Handling of the Mr-S is something very special, I’ve never driven something like this. Nearest one would be Lotus elise. The lightweight MR is rare jem now.

This reminds me of P.S Modify Chonburi's custom mr2s! They also mentioned the good chassis and driving feel that made the company's decision to use mr2s at the base!

As a massive Toyota fan the mr2 is my dream car. It’s a beautiful piece of Japanese wonder with incredible power and reliability for its class

The MR2 spyder is very good, especially in monster hillclimb series. Besides if you compare the car to its time it looks good.

i own one, i love it to bits.
it's more impractical than a Smart for 2.
the MPG ain't anything to write home about.
there's no boot/trunk space other then maybe 2 small to mid sized duffel bags awkwardly placed behind the seats.
you NEED to make sure the engine has been overhauled/updated or risk catastrophic engine failure at some point.
the radio is a brick that hides behind the gear stick.
a decent OEM hardtop is near impossible to find.
and my fat ass barely fits in the seat.
but as someone who is 6'1, or 186Cm for the normal people out there, who tried an NA, NB and even an NC. it's the best option for a fun affordable convertible that allows me to put my knees UNDER the steering wheel instead of wedged between the door and steering wheel.
it's lighter than a Miata, snappy, handles like it's on rails and doesn't rust as easily.
it's an underdog.
and although it might not be worth Ferrari money, they are definitely a fun and worthwhile investment that will only appreciate in value.
I like these mr2s because they're the sister car to my Celica. I'm pretty sure that some of them came with the two ZZ engines from Yamaha, so some of them from the early 2000s had a 180 horsepower 1.8 l with a 6-speed manual same as the Celica GTS. Mutton from Martini works discord server actually has a MR2 that has a ones easy that he is currently turboing

My dad bough one and i said it looked ugly then i drove it and fell in Love with it and got my own MR2 its just fun to drive but now u can buy modified parts and make the lights look like a mean little badger.

Bery light and nimble. Yeah, the headlights look a bit goofy, but as for the rest, it's a sporty-ish toyota of all things
Don't forget about the pre-cat problem, where the VVTi sucks ceramic into the combustion chambers... 2zz-swap them ASAP.
Had one. Great fun. Excellent handling. Reliable as hell and lighter than the first Miata.
They’re already so expensive and rare to even see for sale - especially for a manual. Most of the decent ones are automatic anyways. I still want one super bad though

Mk1 Audi TT is a super fun car...it's like a go-kart for adults with the power to weight ratio(with the 225hp version of the car), all time all-wheel drive with the Quatro drivetrain, and snappy steering make for an inexpensive fun car.

Mainly cause i used the shit out of it as a kid when playing Juiced on ps2 for class 8 and 7 races

I always thought the 3rd gen MR2 was like that one thing you REALLY like..but for some reason still think its ugly, but not at the same time and cant quite figure out why. Ive always wanted to get my hands on a 1st gen..but I honestly like all three.

Fun fact: Toyota MR2 was originally called MRS in Japan, the name was changed for the USA market
I like every Gen of the MR-2, because they all feel like some totally different cars even though they were all évolutions of the predecessor with the same idea behind it… but the original one was the 80’s spaceship AW11, then there was the Ferrari-like 90’s smooth body lined SW20, and then the little capable sporty roadster that was the ZZ30… I think there’s an MR-2 for everyone depending on what type of driving and experience they want to have
yeah this may not be as pretty as the one that came before but this platform is just *chef's kiss.

I live for MR2’s, but i just cant get behind the gen 3. It just doesnt look right to me. My 100% fav is the gen 2 w the popups, and it has improved snap oversteer. MR2 gen 2 goated car.

Imagine saving up and getting close to buying a fun project car and then a video comes out and now the car few were even noticing, gets hiked out of range .. now imagine a few times of this dynamic. Gets a little frustrating.

The formula for the MR2 is a dream come true- mid engine, sporty/slightly exotic, reliable, and affordable. I hope the 4th gen 2025 (if true) holds to this formula. Some rumors claim it will be like the NSX…not affordable. Another note from the past, the Fiero could have been something but was crap. The X1/9 was stylish (Bertone!, with non-US bumpers) but not reliable.

I honestly want one.
I got the zzw30 to k swap it and only with the condition of getting a LP Monocraft Gen1 kit would I drive it confidently. Stock for stock the zzw20 is looks/performs best but something about that monocraft kit makes the buggy eyes work for me. Prices are rising for these cars.
That's insane. I remember when the 3rd could be snagged for pennies because of those darn buggy headlights. Crazy to see them growing in price and popularity
these are almost 25 years old, meaning that hard top models will be available to import to the us! plus one of these eith a k swap probably goes crazyyy

The mk3 is alright but honestly MX5s perfect 50:50 weight distribution allows for much more balanced handling characteristics
Why tf did this car start blowing up like 6 months after I did research and found out it's a good sports car for extremely cheap and planning on getting it, like bro the more you talk about it the more people buy them and the higher prices go up, it went from about $2,000-$5,000 to get one to about 7,000 already. Just stop talking about it

Don't wanna sound like a jerk but it's an MRS. Yes, it's part of the MR2 family but like you said, it's the ugly duckling of the family. But, man. It's actually one of the most beautiful car I've ever seen.

From what I've seen of them on the road, most are just so clapped out now like the Civics and Celicas from the same era. Too many of them were bought up by folks who wanted cheap, reliable transportation and drove them into the ground.
