The difference between Kota Factory and this is not that one is a documentary and another is fiction.
Kota Factory is about the students from class 11 and 12 who want/ is willing to get into these prestigious colleges. This documentary is perhaps what happens after a student achieves his/her goal and gets into the university life.

@@anoushk we are not focussing on the creme de la creme, the so called dreamers are, and their parents too.I am a mechanical engineering post graduate. I am doing my PhD from this institute. When I joined my B.Tech., in another institute, my dream was to design a very efficient car. Very abstract and lame, right? By the end of 4th year, I realised that Mechanical Engineers just design the structural components of a car, not the aesthetic ones. While a was doing PhD, during a B.Tech. freshers' institute tour of our lab, one fresher stayed back and asked me, "Can I design a car by my 3rd year?" I answered, "No." Sounds brutal, right? But then I said, "By 3rd year, you will get courses about designing the various components of a car. But, designing a fully functional car will take years and years of dedication after that." He was there with his father. After my answer, he looked at his father's face and his father looked at his. Then I said, "But, you will love it here. It is the first IIT of the world not just by chance. 🙂" Yes the smile was included. And this is what I meant by saying, "It will not be easy, it will be worth it."
And addressing your issue, if our country "needed" engineers, where are the openings?

To top it all , in private colleges , profs are provided with insane power to an extent where they can legit destroy a lads career & there is no legal process to get justice. Most private colleges in India are run by corrupt ministers ie. even if you make it to the law & order / justice there is a high probability that you'll get fu**ed up again. It's all a fu**ing business. I mean I suggest everyone to not put engineering as first choice because of its shi**y ROI.

Engineer here, from a state University. The situation in lower echelon colleges is *even worse*. The faculty are idiots. Management treats you like prisoners. You hardly have any money and can't even work part time to make ends meet. You learn jackshit and actually end up dropping IQ. I was a good student growing up. My college absolutely ruined me and the sheer despondency made me attempt suicide. Thankfully I survived due to my friends and am now doing something I love. It's a hard life but at least I'm away from the engineering life to some extent. Our institutions just squeeze the last morsels of love for science and technology out of us.

My experience was very different, I was this student who just understands anything in his way with just a read. Up until 10th everyone around thought I am beast, intelligent and whatnot.
The moment I entered 11th I joined coaching and skipped school. Perhaps the worst decision at that time. Things started to slip out of my hand and I was unable to handle the pressure and manage things. I wanted to take arts but parents never allowed but by the time I reached the end of 11th they were sympathetic towards me and said no coaching anymore, do as good as you can and don't take any drastic step. We will figure out later if failure happens.
Since then I saw my parents evolve they support me with my decisions.
I think my parents became a victim of trend back in the day but I am glad this young generation is understanding that there is possibility in every turn and there is no one formula for success. Today I am in marketing after engineering degree 😁, thanks to my parents, I am happy, more productive and the Krishnan of 10th is back who understands things as it goes.

After joining my college the interest and passion really take a toll. The way the classes and everything are managed just does not add or help you to keep up your passion. Changing your course isn't so easy in the IITs. Based on your JEE Advanced (a competitive exam) All India Rank, you get a stream of engineering or a few choices so you either take it or leave it. And once you join a course in IIT, you can only change your stream in the second year if you do extremely well in the first year and you rarely get to choose your stream in the second year. And also, not many girls take engineering so the government introduced a 17% quota for allowing girls into the IITs but they're still discriminated against as the majority of the students over there are boys. Life is tough in IITs, and it's not like American colleges and universities.

It's not just being in IIT. To be IIT or medical college one has to study very sincerely since they are 14/15 years old. They cannot waste any day or any minute. After getting into the colleges they have to work more hard. And thus pressure reaches it's peak. After best grad college one has to go for best Bschool or other post grad colleges. There too they are grilled. Then also in this economy it is not 100% guaranteed that they will get job.
Being in best schools and colleges is a very tough job. And it can be understand by only those who have been there.

No doubt IITs are the best technical institutions in the country, providing the best in class infrastructure for an individual to grow. But, there as well there is so much competition and pressure that a student goes through and if they can't keep up, they eventually break down.

There are two categories of people
1st who know that engineering is about thinking innovatively and solving problems and they are pretty much passionate about it and can go to any extent to pursue engineering not just for a job but to learn the required skills
2nd category of people who HAVE to do engineering(preferrably in a government funded institute) either because of family pressure or need of money and job and they work hard but may not be as much interested.
As far as the colleges are concerned every college seems imperfect. Private colleges will seem to have more facilities and better college life , government colleges will seem to have better teaching, more focus on research and a better placement record.
People judge you heavily if you are from a private college and that much respect u get if you crack a government college.
U may feel guilty about paying so much money and getting a seat in a private college whereas you may not be happy with the branch you get in a government college.
Whatever it is you have made it to some college somehow. It all depends how hard you work now NOT to get a job but just to satisfy you passionate mind. You may get a less paying job , you may have to work harder in your future life but as long as you like your work there is no worry .
THERE IS NO PROBLEM IN ENGINEERING AS A FIELD.

This is very true, I am an engineering student myself , though I do not study in IIT (I'm a student of BITs Pilani).
The thing is most students are lured (?) by the coaching institutes by saying that once you reach these good colleges (IITs,Nits,Bits, and a few more) in India, your life will be smooth sailing and you won't have to worry about your job opportunities.
Now I'm not saying that it is entirely false, only that people who've been through it forget to tell us about all the pressure, stress and sleepless nights we have to go through to get those. Regarding the job opportunities, these institutes are famous for not only engineering placements but others like finance and consultancy, etc (It's one of the biggest reasons many choose to go for engineering, you get to discover so many things in your college life).
Fact is, most people are not cut out for it(or passionate ) , but they reach these institutes through sheer hard work (without much enthusiasm about it) and then change their career path once they get placed (hypocritical ? )
(P.S. I may be wrong about some things i wrote here, I'm a student and have yet to experience all of these 😊)

We have to support our family financially as soon as we can because I am their only last hope. I am not rich and just like me 90% students are not rich enough to live a good life after this failure.... our system made us to think this way....so I can say that I am not the failure but this country has failed to provide its youth a powerful motive in life.

They are kids man... just turned 18 or barely 18. They don't know any better. As a 28 year old man who has been through all this, it's hard to explain this to a 20 year old that life is gonna get better after this. Help is not out there, I know. But it's tough to explain that they need to look around, stop, pause, take a breath.... I myself came to this realisation that parents actually didn't want me to be a doctor (in my case), they just didn't knew better themselves. In their mind, they associated "doctor " to a social status, success, stable life etc etc. Ok. They actually wanted all of that for me but in their mind the path to that leads via the career of doctor. You know what I mean?

Being someone from Kharagpur who spent the first 18 years of his life in the town and did his schooling from the Kendriya Vidyalaya in IIT campus, I have a few things to share:
    1) Most of the students in IIT, irrespective of what people say or how it might look and feel, are not happy. I don't know why, but I have interacted with many students (they were senior to me both in age and academics, so I couldn't ask much), and all of them had a sad, disappointing tone when they spoke about their life. It was almost like they made it to the apex college of the country, and their success yielded them nothing but disappointment.
    2) Life IS NOT SETTLED ONCE YOU GET A CHANCE IN AN IIT. I have personally seen many students get a package within the range of 1.5- 2 lakh in campus placements, which is very low, even for an IITan.
    3) Students of IIT are intelligent, no doubt. But what people fail to see is that they also have their own aspirations and wishes. Many of them are just a product of hard parents killing their dreams and forcing them to write the IIT JEE because of the age old saying "log kya bolenge ?" (what will the society say ?). They crack, they join, they study, but they are not happy, in spite of all the privileges they get that one can just dream of in other colleges.

Idk if anyone will read this but..in my case, it was my family which never let me have fun, or enjoy anything. Starting from when I was in school, and even when I was in college. I had no friends, coz I wasn't cool enough to hangout. Never went out with my friends. No weekend trips, no vacations, no parties, no movies. The only vacations I went was with the family, the only movies I went to was with my family. Coz "studies are more important than friends". Now I don't have any friends. And I feel really lonely, and jealous of other people, who have friends they can talk to, share their feelings, confide in them. I love music. I wanted to be a singer, but I was discouraged all along, and even though I did get some basic training, I was stopped from going to the auditions, as my dad started verbally abusing me for "trying to destroy my life". That was the first time I wanted to end my life. I still am not allowed to go anywhere, or make my own decisions. (I can't move out yet coz I am not financially independent) It's like a never-ending nightmare..but I'm holding onto the hope that maybe if I can crack the judicial services exam, I can finally move out of this place. Of course, I missed all the fun, and will never get those years of my life back..nor will I get "childhood friends"..maybe I'll have some colleagues who will discuss serious matters regarding the law. I don't even see the point of living a life like this.

I don't know why they always show IITs in the negative light. It's the parents that too blame, when they force the kid to get admission into one without taking into account their interest. Even if a student is interested in the course, the problem is how the IITs are portrayed to the kids by both parents and coaching institute, like a magical place full of rainbows and unicorns where all your dreams will come true, instead of just a stage/tool in life to achieve further. That's what create the dissonance between expectation and reality.
Yes there is counseling available and they even conduct seminar. I even know a case where they allotted a flat to student and her mother, because she said she needed support of her parents to cope.
I am from IIT, and I have gone to depression for 2 years but I would never exchange any part of my 4 years for anything. I remember, during the cultural fest, since I was infrastructure coordinator, I had to stay awake for 36 hrs straight, but looking back I loved the struggle that comes with it and the sense of accomplishment
Yes the pressure is high, because competition is high, but competition is high for anything that's coveted by many. There are many cases even in art and film industry also or any other for that matter. But why is it always shown if someone is a struggling actor, they are just following their dream. But if its a struggling engineer, they are just forced by the system and parent. I always wanted to an engineer, but I still struggled initially

Colleges are just catering to the industry. Its not their fault totally. The only way out from this is creation of a lot more jobs. Even IIT students are losing hope of ever finding a job that they like. Mechanical and civil engineers are mostly turning towards IT, which puts them under even more pressure since they have to balance academics( since the grading is relative grading, the competition is very high since the students are the ones who got very similar ranks in jee, and are of very similar caliber, each and every mark can affect your grade and when other colleges are giving 8's and 9's generously, students here are struggling to get 7's ) and also study for IT jobs while also trying their level best for core jobs.

Blame the system, parents, students whatever you feel like depending on where you're coming from. Truth is we all are equally responsible for this chaotic education system which has become so dependent on results that human life and emotions are nothing more than collateral damage. I am a electrical engineer in my mid 20's, and I have stopped suggesting anyone to become an engineer. I don't think it's worth it anymore.

I just gave jee advanced this year wasn't able to crack it . I studied for 15 hrs a day and was feeling suicidal every day . I hate this system.
Thankfully my parents were understanding and knew that i went all in for this exam. I am doing engineering from bits but now I've come to know that I'm not interested in engineering AT ALL!!
    I'm interested into geography,history,politics. But here i am doing something i don't like .
To every jee aspirant my question to you is .. ask yourself do you really want to persue engineering or is it just the peer pressure that is trying to push you there

the pressure is too much and very real
the system fails constantly, not coming up with more institutes catering to ever rising no. of students sitting for the examination.
But the most important of all is the immense family pressure and expectation to either make their child either a doc or engineer and the worst part of it is that 90% of students sitting for the examination don't want to be either of them.

Let me give you some perspective..... Most of the Indian families are not capable to give their students many career options.... as everyone thinks that being an engineer(getting to IIT as it is the best institute in terms of jobs) or being a doctor(getting to top colleges of medical sciences) is the only way to get assured success.... Since India has such a large population, the competition is immense.... Out of 2 million applicants for engineering exams only around 6k are able to get to IIT.... Hence parents have to spend soo mch on the preparation of entrance exams of these institutes..... The preparation only cost soo mch that ultimately a student(or I would say the whole family of tht student) gets mentally and financially trapped in that circle wherein he feels that the end to all this hard work is getting into the IIT.... And kota factory shows how the practice of entrance exams is done..... And then when the person who has invested so mch gets into these colleges .... few students don't find it the way they thought abt it in their dreams and now they end up being in that place wherein they've spent their money and time on getting into IIT(college fees include as well).... and now no matter what ,they've to get through it.... The pressure to repay all theirs and their family's hardwork by getting a good job makes them take wrong steps....This is the story on which this series and also 3 idiots is about..... Although not all students go through the same thing as some do have passion or some do have the resources to follow their dreams which they discover in IIT....But there's a large section of students who feel this pressure every year.... Hope this helps you understand how things actually are😊
