I have a Leica M7, I'm curious it seems to me there's more Leica M6's either being used or people doing RUclips videos, I don't know if I've seen you doing an M7 one? I could be wrong of course. But just curious is it just not as popular as the others?
Hi, yes the M6 is much more popular. I've never owned or used a M7 hence no video but if I get to test in the future I will make a video. (The same for the M5*)
Read your review on the linked site - well done! IMO every Leica camera has its little quirks with pros and cons depending on the photographer's preference. My favorite is probably the M6 - only complaint I have here is the patch finder flare due to the missing condenser. The M7 has this issue mostly resolved - here I like the more accurate in-camera metering which is very useful for slide film photography which I often use. I don't use all the other electronic gadgets provided by the M7 - it is now overpriced in the used gear market, too after Leica stopped making it. I sometimes use the M6/M7 in parallel - confusing part here is that the rotation of both cameras' exposure wheel is vice-versa. I always move one in the wrong direction! The M3 is the best regarding viewfinder in use with 50 mm or longer focal lengths. Two cons to mention here: the viewfinder has a bit of disturbing blueish cast which other Leica cameras don't have (maybe the M2, but I never used this camera). Other con is that now the M3 shutters fail in masses - occurred to my copy this year, too. The repair shop told me that they are getting a ton of M3s suffering the same issue. Certainly something to be aware of when getting a M3 now. Not an M camera, but one of my favorites is the Leica IIIc for LTM lens gear. Much more compact and simple to use after getting used to inserting film correctly there. Con here: very limited exposure range on the dial - no good to use with slide film judging from my own experience with it! Ideal for B&W film shooting. One thing never mentioned anywhere else is that the rangefinder patch has a nice feature no other M camera has: it has a yellowish color cast when the area is in focus - reminds me on the modern mirrorless focus peaking with color pattern.
Hi Martin, sorry for the slow reply and thanks for the detail shared here/ kind words. Some interesting stuff you mention esp. the Leica IIIc RF. My new IIIF comes this week hopefully so excited to try it. Interesting about the M3s too.. I have 2. Good to know this , thanks. Yes a few people like the M7, they tell me, i've not tried one yet. I never stop learning, thanks!
I bought a very nice looking M3 with a rigid type 2 50mm cron, also in great condition for 900 EUR in 2013. In 2014 I added an equally nice M2 with a type 1 collapsible 50mm cron, 35 mm Summaron and 90 mm Elmarit for 1200 EUR and a well used but technically perfect M6 without any zinc-rot for 595 EUR. PRices were really low back then compared to today. All these cameras in the video did not come even closely to that amount of money back then. I sadly sold all my Leica rangefinders a few years later, missed them and bought a used but technically perfect, freshly CLAed M5, recalibrated to 1.55 V LR44 batteries and paid below 1000 EUR, which today is a steal for a film Leica. And I have to say: its ergonomics are MUCH better than even the M6 and I would not want to go back to any of the previous cameras now.
Matt, I'm surprised you haven't done a video on the Zeiss Ikon ZM. The viewfinder frame and framelines are better and brighter than the M7.
Hi thanks, I will if I ever get to use one. One of my Patreons in France loves his!
