  • Forrest R. Lindsey served as a Marine artillery forward observer in I Corps, South Vietnam, 1966-1967. Four months into a six-month extension beyond a normal deployment to Vietnam, he was seriously wounded and spent months in a hospital. He shares memories of his Vietnam service and reflects more broadly on the conflict. He believes that more time and attention should have been given to protecting South Vietnamese civilians and winning them to the non-communist side via efforts associated with civic action ("hearts and minds") programs. He retains a strong sense of commitment to the people of old South Vietnam. He was commissioned in 1973 and served as an officer in the Marine Corps, retiring as a lieutenant colonel in 1996. His memoir is titled "In Country." Posted as part of the "War & Life: Discussions with Veterans" project.
