  • “If you don’t like freezing cold weather and fierce blowing winds, then Baffin Island and the Arctic are not for you.” These words by explorer Steve Hall accurately describe the harsh climate awaiting most hikers who come to Baffin Island, even in the summer. After 3 years of planning, Steve takes viewers along with him while backpacking through Akshayuk Pass in Auyuittuq National Park, located in Nunavut, Canada. Spectacular scenery is seen while passing by mountains, lakes, glaciers, rivers, and waterfalls. This includes Mount Thor, which has the greatest vertical drop of any mountain in the world. And Mount Asgard, which has a unique cylindrical shape with a flat top. But seeing these sights in person and hiking in the Arctic presents great challenges to deal with such as enduring the weather, crossing raging rivers, climbing unstable moraines, and dealing with morale-draining wet bogs. As he takes on these challenges, Steve becomes the first person in nearly 2 years to backpack to Mount Thor, while hiking from Overlord West to June Valley.
This award-winning documentary features three original songs co-written by Steve: “Weasel River”, “Baffin Island”, and “Snowy Owl”. Winner of Best Documentary Feature at the New York International Film Awards. Winner of Best Documentary Feature Film at the Five Continents International Film Festival. Winner of Best Indie Filmmaker at the Festigious International Film Festival. Winner of Best Song (Award of Prestige) for "Snowy Owl" at the Vegas Movie Awards. Winner of Honorable Mention: Documentary Feature at the Los Angeles Film Awards. Winner of Honorable Mention at the Athens International Monthly Art Film Festival. Filmed and released in 4K HD.

In 2003 I had the privilege of spending the summer working in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut which is on Victoria Island. The western portion of the island is part of the Northwest Territory. The eastern portion is Nunavut. The 24 hr day , the tundra, the sea coast, the lakes and rivers and mallards, eiders, Canada geese, Arctic char, foxes, seals and Musk oxen made for a majestic experience that is fresh on my mind 20 years later. Thanks for this video. To anyone reading this, if you ever have the opportunity to explore the Arctic do it-you’ll never regret it. 😊
PS all the cairns that Steve is talking about are known by the Canadian Inuit people as Inukshuk. They are constructed precisely to guide the way across the endless expanse.

Enjoyed this glimpse of the park. I lived in the settlement of Broughton Island, the name I knew it by in 1974 to 1975. My husband did the trip in March of 1973 by skidoo, travelling south from Br, Is. to Pangnirtung, it was quite the adventure as they had to negotiate frozen falls at the end of the trip. Thankfully we have photos, not easy to get back in the 70’s when trying to keep your camera warm, inside your parka for body heat was the only chance of it working but hard to do on long overnight trips. Hope you get to repeat the trip by skidoo from the top end, perhaps in March/April while the pass is frozen, maybe not so many polar bears on the move at that time.

I can see Labrador across the Strait of Belle Isle from my place at the northern tip of Newfoundland. I love the scenery and landscapes there. Your walk through that Canadian National Park was incredible. What incredible beauty and what an amazing place to walk. And to be there alone. Wow!
The north shore of the Great Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland, where my place is, is considered the southern extent of the sub-arctic alpine biome. Had a polar bear show up one spring when I was there. Got a great shot of it out my bathroom window. One of my neighbors saw the bear cross the road near midnight on her way home from the second shift. She called the RCMP and Wildlife Officer and then, knowing that I went out walking in the morning by myself, she called me. So glad I had warning. She may have saved my life!
