In #PaatalLok, #HathiRam slaps his wife in a fit of anger, like Shahid, but I don't see a #KabirSingh like uproar over it? Is it because it paddles the left-liberal agenda and Hinduphobia so feminism can be brushed aside?

PATAL LOKE is not a web series it's anti Hindu balbajari propaganda which has become a trend among web series nowadays be it sacred games or patal lok. Don't watch it. Don't give these disgusting people any attention.
Didnt expect this from a big star like kohli promoting such bullshit. When are people going to stop their hinduphobia in a hindu majority state?
Hateful , Fake Propaganda , Imaginary Hindu Humiliation. When all over the world including India Hindus are tortured at the same time a propaganda is spread to supress the torture in Bengal , Kerala. Shame that Indian is painting India in bad light without iota of fact
And one more thing these raand ki aulaad director used the "nepali randi" in one of your scene. how can you point out entire community by saying nepali. anushka you are enough educated to know that this will hurt sentiment of nepali community. please grow up and dont act like kid being so educated. your mind is really low graded and cheap.
However this movie is blatantly hinduphobic,as like the upper class bollywood elite liberals..On every episode muslims are shown as victims of oppression which is far from reality....hindu gods and lord Rama were shown in a bad light. the demonization of the Hindus sometimes takes front seat than the actual story.
Boycott this kind of series guys
      Completely embarrassing shit..

On quality of detailing in this series, I want to mention this one scene, where Hathiram and Ansari reach the spot where body of Taariq has been fished out from the Yamuna. Amongst all the Policemen surrounding the body, you see two men in the corner, they are the ones who fished out the body, and how do we know this? One of the men sitting down, is mildly shivering. Now the focus isn't on these men. It is a wide shot with all of the policemen. The shivering too is so suppressed, as if he is instinctively trying to contain it. To think of that detail, is just so amazing. It makes the world so real. Whoever was responsible for that, whether it is the writer or the director or the actor, one has to salute that effort.
But on the lack of substantial contribution of female characters in this series I have to disagree with Sudip Sharma. It actually felt very inorganic as a viewer to me. Here’s why.
Every character has been depicted with their strengths and flaws in this series, a lot of effort is taken to show us why all the male characters are, the way "they are". So much so that the viewers end up empathising even with a sociopath killer. But when it comes to the few women here, the same effort just looks missing. The characters of Dolly and Chanda especially seem to have been robbed of their stories, we are shown their flaws but without any back stories, which most of the male characters are gifted with. As a result even the blackest of the male characters become grey, whereas the barely grey characters of women become become black (or uni dimensional). ‘Dolly’ just gets painted dumb and naive, the little bit of her love for animals we get to see, also turns out to be just a plot device and Chanda becomes the typical clichéd untrustworthy ‘Tv Serial Vamp’, even her monologue in self-defence, dismissed by our hero, the touchstone for morality in this series. I don't know why Gul Panaag was cast at all in her role, her character is completely wasted. Character of Sara Mathews is the only saving grace. When she tells Sanjeev Mehra ‘I won’t judge you, if you don’t judge me” so nonchalantly, it felt like a long pending milestone for Hindi cinema.
Women otherwise, seem to be there, only as causes for their men's actions, for their waywardness, their failures, their criminal behaviour. Tope Singh's uncle literally says it "Kudi da chakkar bada maada honda hai janaab!" I wish this line hadn’t been used to gain the viewer’s sympathy for Tope Singh.
Justified depiction of women Vis-à-vis men can't be an agenda anymore, it's just a matter of factual representation of our world where women form half of it, especially If you want to do justice to your story. Hence this lopsidedness seems to stand out as a creative judgement error to me. The world of Pataal Lok is so complete otherwise, that the absence of comprehensible women, just sticks out.
If this was an overlook, then maybe a woman should have been a co writer , or a script consultant or one of the directors, then maybe it would have been brought to notice (I know Anushka is the producer, maybe she should have, maybe its not her job, I don't know). Also Haathiram hitting his wife just seemed wrong, especially when he is never shown to realise his mistake and apologise.
I understand now, what she meant when Zoya Akhtar said in an interview with Anupama that, 'no matter how much you layer it, your worldview will show in your movies".
Regardless of this short coming Pataal Lok is an amazing work of art and all round team effort. It deserves all the praise and Indian viewers deserve more of such amazing stories. Please.

I mean Cmon, the co producer, the editor and some major primary characters are all females. And don’t tell me all the females were “busy” during this lockdown to come for an interview with a renowned portal such as yours. Instead you only chose all the males and then asking them the silly so called psuedo feminist question about female characters!!! CMON, really!

Im honestly glad Paatal Lok didn’t force a woman centric role or character down our throats - not because I don’t believed women aren’t important - but for this particular setting and series it would not have been authentic and would only make that female character look foolish as it doesn’t fit... big up to the directors and writers on understanding that forcing a strong female character doesn’t makes a good series.

Forget about the larger themes of still prevailing casteiest and communal realities of india- equally, or even more disturbing is the sexual side of it. Just the lack of any consideration for any life specially woman life in rural india is deeply disturbing to say the least. The one scene in the jail where a jailmate bathing next to cheeni is not just top notch acting (kudos to the little known actor) but kind of sums up the sexual menace there is in the society. rape as a way of revenge, pedophilic behavior is just representative of it.

They didn't deliberately try to do it in two years. If they're going to do something else as good as this or even something better, I can wait 2 years.
    All of us can.
    And should.
Because this is what was demanded out of them to make it THIS good.
And because the story is so well adapted and worthy of celebration among a new breed of indie film-makers, if it paves the way for future storytellers to take time and work on their scripts and be honest to them, like the creators of Paatal Lok, then so be it.
One Paatal Lok every 2 years is any day better than faulty, quick dopamine releases that neither have heart nor soul.
    Great interview though. (Y)

Anupama chopra, I am shocked that you conducted a 40 minute interview with these amazing talents, but didn't ask any question about Anushka Sharma , who is PRODUCER of this series.... I loved the interview but it left me bitter as well... Anushka is the DEFINITION of WOMEN EMPOWERMENT..... An OUTSIDER, who became india's YOUNGEST FEMALE PRODUCER at age of 25 in 2014..... And she is producing pure content-driven cinema.... When someone is not given credit for her work and success, it's a sign of degenerative society.... Its a sad reflection of subtle prejudices that exist among so called "film experts"... Btw, I don't think "film critics" should ever talk about women empowerment and equality if they can't Admire the females who are actually breaking all barriers of benchmarks of success in deeply male chauvinistic bollywood industry...
