- Those bursts of sound in the Rat man's den are actually SSTV signals that can be decoded into images using SSTV decoding softwares such as this:
users.belgacom....
This is from the Rat man's den in test chamber 17, with the developer commentary on, you'll find a chat bubble that only plays this sound, well here it is, decoded.
link to another decoded signal:

Slide 1:
Portal 2 Announcement ARG (Alternate Reality Game, google it, there's lots of them which are awesome)
Created by people working on Portal 2
Intended for enthusiastic superfans
Budget of less than $100
Portal updated to include radios, brod-
casting mysterious SSTV images
Certain images contained pieces of an
MD5 hash of a phone number
Phone number lead to an old-fashioned BBS
-Estimated time to 'solve': 7 hours
Actual time to solve: 7 hours 16 minutes
Slide 2:
Portal 2 SSTV Images
Analogue format used in HAM radio
Watching video of ISS SSTV soft-
ware running sound from laptop speakers
unexpectedly picked up by microphone
Peculiar squeking and beeping degrades
in visually interesting ways
Photos of Valve whiteboards, equipment
and anything science-related lying around
Finding radios in Portal made for fun meta-game everyone could join in
Slide 3:
Aperture Laboratories BBS
Single analogue phone line in a designer's kitchen (phone
systems in Valve office too modern)
Old PC running Linux attached to a 2400 bps modem
from 1987 via USB to serial adaptor)
ngetty to handle calls, custom PHP script looping through
plot fragments and home-made ANSI-art conversions of
Portal 2 artwork
Transmitted about 20 MB of data garbled text
phoneline constantly engaged!
Several spare modems in case one died - none did
SSH backdoor for updates and monitoring (possible to watch exactly what people were seeing as they dialed in)
Combined might of internets is terrifying
"Combined might of internets is terrifying."
Agreed.
Interesting... also, these transmissions scare the heck out of me.
"Shadow"i like the sound of this
ShadowStryker slice SSTV signals and anything like it has always creeped me out. It's like, my gut tells me something freaky is there in those transmissions, but in all reality nothings scary about it. It must be me.
"Shade"he makes music out of any sound he hears his mind is different even from mine
ShadowStryker slice Weird...
"Shade" it's weird but it's weird awesome
That was some hardcore dubstep.
One thing:
After you end Portal (the original, not 2), the background changes to a cake and cube.
By typing "thirdperson" in the console, you see there is a vintage phone connected in the wall.
That's the one mentioned here to have been the BBS.
On slide 3, where it says "*garbled text* to handle calls" the garbled text is "mgetty" a linux program that allows terminals (ttys) over a modem. Google "man mgetty" without quotes.
@GhostLink92 And I quote Gabe Newel from 5 years in the future:
"Now, for the game you all have been waiting so eagerly for.
Left 4 Dead 3."
wow. I wouldn't have the time, resources, or patience to decode something like this. my hat is off to you. The amount of detail put into all of this is stunning.
It's the same thing as wifi, just way more basic because to transmit on a frequency we can actually hear you're going to be relegated to a very small bandwidth.
"Transmitted about 20 MB of data in total"
I really amazing actually that valve would make some awesome easter eggs.
this sound keeps me up. i hate that i love it. this and the other transmission in this game are so eerie to me.
if you look closely at the images there are pictures in the white
That is fucking awesome how you can put an image into audio.
i just love how stuff like this is everywhere in the game :D then after a lot of thinking (and mostly going on google) you either get really freaked out or say "ohh i get it now!"
Is this amount of noise in the image intended, or is it just the SSTV technology being old?
☺☻♥123maarten123♥☻☺ the SSTV code
☺☻♥123maarten123♥☻☺ how SSTV works is well sound is translated into an image, so basicly the beeps are the code, that it turns into an image
Equine Virus a different pitch is a defferent color
☺☻♥123maarten123♥☻☺ yes, yes it is
Neither. It's just because audio compression like MP3 does really bad things to the image quality. SSTV can look much better than this with a good signal.
Well, it was a commentary node, which is supposed to talk about the game. And here, Adam talked about the game. Adam you sneaky dude
Some warning would have been nice. now! Excuse me while I go clean the blood out of my ears.
taken a closer look at that last transmition look at the background
I was getting a clearer picture through the sound than the youtube video quality. This is the point in time where I know youtube needs to clean up, and boost their software XD
@snarkbaited Okay, here's a simple step by step guide on how to decode SSTV signals:
Step 1: READ THE DESCRIPTION.
Step 2: ???
Step 3: PROFIT!
Combine might of internets is terrifying.
This is also the way a old tv gets stuff on it it. it picks up the signal of the channel your on and decodes the sound as a picture but it does that very fast so you dont notice it.
@DeloreandudeTommy I think that's exactly why. All those other sounds interfered with the signal, and it probably wasn't transmitted well in the uploader's case. A headphone jack is a good idea.
i was having RX SSTV on and you made me decode...
It didn’t even occur to me that it was a SSTV signal
I didn't wear headphones. I know I don't have to hear it, but that still doesn't mean I didn't expect the noise. Plus, before I had posted the previous comment I didn't know about SSTV, so I did research. But, thanks for the suggestion anyway =D
Someone needs some calibrate their soundcard
I think tt would have been cool if they hinted hl3 in this but oh well this is still awesome
R.I.P earphone users!!!
I don't think I'll be able to sleep
XD
Dubstep origins.
Basically, its a PowerPoint slide pitching the ARG (probably the same one the person who came up with it pitched to the heads of Valve as a means of promoting the second game).
@starter656
They were referring to the ARG, not Portal 2 itself.
Valve has some pretty amazing development team to create the stuff there creating.. I think its fair to say valve is the verry best game development industry around. Its almost creepy to experience how advanced there work is
arbacular drop was around 4 years before the first Portal :3
Really... we're just test subjects to the creators
best i could make out about the *garble* next to handle calls was,
"getty" the actual word could be a synonym for "created" or "made for"
In chapter 7 where she was in a potato she copied Caroline word for word and freaked out. I'm pretty sure she at least has her memories.
I couldnt have said it better myseld. "Combined might of internets is terrifying".
um no im not that' what encoded means it means that if something is encoded. it means that the binary is being interpreted wrong or it's been scrambled or something like that
In the same way you can transmit images as pulses of light or energy over the internet. SSTV is just slower.
You should make sure your feeding it the original sound, recordings always alter de frequency (depending of the quality of the recording ofcourse)
You just sortof think of the image you want to make in your mind then make a bunch of high pitched beeping noises. If you get good at it, you can make some impressive works of art!
LOL! I'm laughing. Is that just a note on the video game!?! They put that there to see if people would do something to see what it means and it turns out to be just some credits! XD OMG I love you creators of Portal.
Was I the only one who got scared when this started playing through the radio in Portal 2?

For those unwilling to look, that says Ratman in Morse Code.
Watch this with your mic one and with RK-SSTV open! COOL
the garbled text in slide 3 says
"in total"
(without quotes,of course xD)
i looked through the game's files and found the commentary sstv thing and decoded it myself
it's an ENCODED MESSAGE meaning it has to do with the bios (binary operating system)

Combined mights of outer spaces is terrifying.
Space Core: SPAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAACE
Also, nice video.
Lol, I just did that and then came back to this page. It is pretty cool though.
Correction: Aperture Science.
Missed the r in aperture
you can hide pictures in a sound and it sounds distoured like this cause you edit its file it cause this neat thing you just change its file .jpg to .raw for mac i think i dont know how for windows
Listen to the Cave Johnson quotes and what GLaDOS says at the end of the game closely.
I'm looking at some better res pictures, the garbled text is "mgetty to handle calls" and "Transmitted about 20 MB of data in total"
1.find song
2.open up photo editor
3. text tool
4. write my pancakes are dry
5.profit
6.science.
As cool as SSTV is, it gives somebody a massive headache if they aren't careful >.
the history between portal and half-life are connected. still im not sure if caroline is glados as u say
if you want the best quality I recommend you play the audio file off your phone and connect it to your computer as a mic. That was you avoid slanting or any of that stuff. still this looks great
Codes within codes. Clever clever..
These sounds are fucking up my tv!
I watched the video in some really good quality, and the picture just says the radios were put in for fun.
Well, the thing is, a special frequency, when played in a certain tone/order/way, than processed, can generate images, if you have a decoder.
I think its called... SSTV?
amazing game
Looks to me like the last bit of *garbled text* might say "(in cache)." Not sure how much sense that makes.
Think more 56k dial-up tones, but with much less speed.
its a text, in this case. the other one in the game is an image
Oh and the garbled text after "Transmitted about 20 MB of data" is likely "in total"
it's like you tried to kill head phone users like me
Not the pic of companion cube sitting on the moon. . . Old record. . .
So the massive green shards at the sides are what? Infinite?
I don't get why the picture is so garbled, I did it and mine turned out just fine (straight, clear, no sync issues and with only a small amount of corruption, but not much more than most Portal 1 SSTV images). Maybe it's because I turned off the music completely and recorded directly off of the headphone jack.
Caroline had her brain copied into a computer that was GLaDOS
That sound is the Audio COmmentary, right? Because without it you only hear odd sobbing and strange distorted yelling...
@waze3174 The small text after data is "in total" theres a video on the sidebar with better res >>
does anyone notice the background of the transmission you can hear the faithplate fly sound
@GhostLink92 Well, actually, hidden in Portal 2 is a lifesaver from the Borealis...
@CyborgNinja7 I'll post a video of the "clean" decodings if you want.
@ed1222 While I was giddy to find that, I was sort of hoping for a bit more. Like finding Alyx at the end of the DLC instead of a friggin crow... -_-
First garbled word looks like *getty (possibly agetty), which opens a tty in Unix systems. Makes sense since the line above says "Old PC running Linux."
glados is not a good person to believe in. she said for example that you could do the final test instead of trying to escape and you die if you listen to her. We actually don't know if she has caroline in her brain and if she really deleted it. (just read messages again, long time I had replied to this guy. Tough the point is that he assumes caroline = glados which is not)
amazing
@waze3174 '
ah, thanks mate. i never look into descriptions, sorry :) ive been looking for this program for so long !!!
valve, you are so cool.
sounds like retro game music lol
@a2real2original2name well, i'm using RX-SSTV, and i didn't do any tweaks so maybe try to use that instead, the link is in the description.
this stuff isn't advanced, SSTV format has been around for decades. Valve has some pretty neat ideas for easter eggs is all
I think this is some special encoding, not JPEG or PNG or any normal image codec.
that sound hurts my ears
When I do, my image is verry unclear, can you help me tweak it?
STILL no hints at Episode 3? *sigh*
hey waze whrere you said "grabled text, about 20 mb of data, garbled text" actually read "transmitted about 20 MB of data"
i dont know what was in the small letters
Taco.... Really? That was to easy.
...For some reason whenever I play this video the computer still makes noises.
People counting, and random babbling.
THIS ISNT THE TRANSMISSION DECODED IM NOT TALKING ABOUT THE FINAL TRANSMISSION BUT THIS IS AN EDITED VERSION OF SOME PORTAL 2 GAME THINIGY
Combine with Valve's CRAZY DEVELOPERS is terryfying, imo.
"transmitted about 20 MB of data *garbled text*"
i think the garbled text looks like "in total"
so it would be "tansmitted about 20 MB of data in total"
Whart would the image look like if the sound is played backwards, then decoded
Maybe the same picture but upside down!
Danielle Labianca Famix of Power probably . a inverse as you said
+Famix of Power Here is the reverse image: prntscr.com/9j7uup
and a regular image: prntscr.com/9j7vjr
this is on robot 36, results may vary from technology to technology.
AmperaYT Well, at least we tried.
Famix of Power It was better then I expected though.
@SnakesGames It's a TV signal. lol
Hmm...I tried to scan the same signal, but the same scanner is coming out as unclear. Anyone have an idea what's wrong here?
