  • In today's video, i'm trying on WIDE CALF boots from target! As of a couple of years ago since my body has become more midsize / plus size, I've realized that most boots don't fit my calves - so I decided to do a little try on investigating the world of wide calf boots! I chose Target to begin because they're affordable and accessible - did they pass the test? Watch to find out lol! Let me know if you'd like me to make this into a series in a comment below! xoxoxo

I am on the struggle with you. I have very wide calfs. It's not a weight issue, it is simply how I am. I also have wide feet, so I need wide calf and wide width in the footbed. When tall boots were very popular, I had none and couldn't find any. Once I managed to find a pair, it was ankle boots that were popular. I became aware of my wide calves when the movie Clueless came out and I really wanted the tall socks but my mom said those will never fit.

It’s not even just plus size women who are left out of “regular” calf size boots. They generally don’t fit muscular women either (bodybuilders, athletes, etc...)

The boots, on targets website, say the width is 14-15in. These are not very wide of a calf boot at all. Standard widths are typically 11-13in depending on the brand. My calves are 19in, they wouldnt fit in any of the ones she tried on.

Torrid makes extra wide calf. For reference, I'm a size 20 with kinda "skinny" legs so I can get away with standard wide calf boots. I don't think it's really a size thing but measuring calf circumference can help you find some that fit.

I was going to comment about Torrid's shoes. I wear between 11W-12W shoes, which is really hard to find. But, ALL of Torrid's shoes are wide width. The only drawback are they're a little pricey, so I wait for sales, and the quality, is only so-so for what you're paying.

Shoe expert here: Brands like Cobb Hill (by Rockport) do wide with shoes and wide calf boots a lot. More expensive of course but you'll get a lot of years out of them.
If you are looking at a store that doesn't do wide calf, accordion folds on the top of the boots or ones with an elastic panel with help with wider calves. Or, if you have boots you love but the calf is too tight, you can get a cobbler to put an extra panel in the back with elastic or matching leather.
Calf size can depend on your height/body make-up. Shorter people generally have their calves lower down than someone taller, and of course boots are also based on taller and usually thinner, fit models.
And there is extra wide calf! Just harder to find.

I found a pair of non-wide calf boots once that I had to have. It was close enough that I took them to a cobbler and he stretched them for me. I still remember the kind of judgy look he got on his face when I mentioned that many women have the same size or larger calves as me, so you'd think there'd be more options for us. You can find extra-wide calf boots - they are out there. I find, like many things made in larger sizes, they have fewer actually cute options, though.

Thank you for making this video! I've only gotten into boots in the last 5 years and STRUGGLE to find some that fit my athletic calves. I've actually been in a store trying on boots that are my normal shoe size, only to have them refuse to zip due to my calves. I had to go up a size in order for them to zip comfortably, and forgo any of the slinky fitted boots for the looser styles(while wearing two socks in order for them to fit my small feet as well). I am looking forward to going to Target and trying these "wide calf" boots for myself, maybe they will work. Please do more wide calf videos!

My parents run a shoe shop for 35 years and I can tell that selling/finding the right pair of boots is a STRUGGLE. The number of people with the ideal size, not too loose, not too tight, is ridiculously small.
Elasticated inserts always help, of course. Sock boots are always a good option. There's
a spray that helps you mould and loosen shoes. We always suggested on investing on a good pair (doesn't mean super expensive) and have it tailored by a professional shoemaker. Ask if their moulds are heated, as you'll have the best results in stretching the calves out. A good shoemaker can also put those elastic inserts I was talking about before. You can cheat 5-8 extra centimetres that way. Honestly I'm so glad shoes are also getting more diverse! Until a decade ago the trend was to get rid of the smallest and biggest number because it wasn't profitable for a brand.
(And yes, Carrie, everyone has a bigger calf and a bigger foot than the other 😄)

Make sure you measure your calves while you’re sitting; in the description, it tells you the calf width circumference and I go off of that. The Target ones are 16.5 inches, which is almost 2 inches too small for me :/ I love Torrid boots (get them on a sale though, never pay full price!). I’ll usually buy them right before fall and after the boot season and I can get them for about $30 to $60, depending on the style (right now there are some styles on sale!). But again, look at the description because even Torrid calf sizes vary. I recommend if you buy boots from there, you size down. I am a 9 and size down to an 8.5 for almond toe or pointed toe styles. Sometimes I can get away with an 8 but I prefer the 8.5 for comfort.

OMG yes! I worked in a footwear shop that was geared up for older people and that was probably the only shop I knew that did Wide fit shoes and boots!
Also even when I was a “smaller” frame (UK size 8/10) I still had wide calves and never could wear longer leg boots cos my calves were just too wide.
The UK needs to step up and make wider fit more accessible!!!
Thank you for your inclusive content x
