Brother, what kind of foes have you faced, besides the ones in your homeland? And the ones here, of course. Hm....there were many tournaments. But there was one, a warrior. He wore sturty armor, and weilded a...shovel. A shovel you say? Well i dont imagine he stood a chance, right brother? ... You're kidding.
Real Talk thou: The Knights in the Shovel Knight universe are incredible powerhouses. Plague Knight was able to destill a potion of theoretically infinite power that had enough Power to level the whole tower of Fate, a Landmark visible from the starting village that is SO FAR away that the Knights take days to Travel the distance. Along the road they have to pass many mountain chains, a Volcano, a entire Coast of the Ocean or really big Sea, past a Arctic Region. Like holy crap, when you travel so far that the temperatures are dropping without going into the mountains then you know that you cover a insane distance. Furthermore It took more then one day to scale the whole Tower of Fate. We are talking about Superpowered humans here and a literal Ninja (Donavan) had to camp with his best for 2 nights before reaching the peak with the amulet. I feel like most people miss just how Gargantuan the Tower of Fate actually is. The thing must be nearly the size of Mount Everest. And again Plague knight was able to contain a power that was able to topple this massive mega structure. Plague Knights Magnum Opus would have been enough to blow Mount Olympus Sky high from GoW something which the combined might of all the Titans could not achieve. Given all this information it is no longer so unrealistic for our favorite shovel wielder to legitimately best Kratos. In fact I argue that the Power Dynamic is completely on it's head with Kratos having no achievements that suggest that he could actually best Shovel Knight. Plague of Shadows really upped the ante in terms of feats for the whole cast
Atreus: “father was their ever a mortal that beat you after you became a god?” Kratos: “hmmm there was one. He did not wield normal weaponry, nor did he fight with normal tactics. He was noble foe to say the least.” Freya: “is there any chance we could recruit him to our cause?” Kratos: “no, he is not from this land, nor would he condone the horrors of Ragnarok.” Mimir: “Well from the sounds of it he’s much more suited for his land than our.”

I read this in their voices perfectly
The dialogue also implies his appearance in Mk9 and playstation all stars are canon too

They gave him air combos..
Atreus: “father was their ever a mortal that beat you after you became a god?”
Kratos: “hmmm there was one. He did not wield normal weaponry, nor did he fight with normal tactics. He was noble foe to say the least.”
Freya: “is there any chance we could recruit him to our cause?”

Shovel Knight: *Not on my watch!*
Shovel Knight is no stranger to dealing with ghosts, though this one seems to be a tad feistier than the rest.
Kratos: You can’t defeat me
Zeus: I know but he can
Shovel Knight: SK&ULT!
