The way Zimmerman played the c-minor chord (01:00) is so beautiful. Absolutely perfect timing and perfect volume.

I saw the whole video here on RUclips. I hope to be able to attend a public concert when he will be playing. He is rarely appearing in public. His inspiration for this beginning of the Ballade 1 is remarkable and understandable immediately. Thank you.

It is not improvisation, but a vivid recounting of a tragic tale; working out this tale of agony is the key to understanding this astonishing work.

Genius - so obvious when he says it but not something I'd ever thought before. Sometimes you hear people play the beginning very a tempo - very to the point. And it just doesn't hit. I think this explains why. They know where they are going, but the beginning of the first ballade is exploratory in its very nature. To know your next move so readily is to fail to honor the spirit of the piece.

Rubish. Z. is not bad, but he is exaggerating with this mysticism and it makes me laugh. Too much of being so clever, clever, clever. The music is simple and doesn't need to elaborate so much.

That's honestly what distinguishes a typical pianist and a great one. Zimerman is showing that music isn't just playing a piece mindlessly, but that it requires a passionate effort from your interpretation of the piece as well. In my opinion his Chopin ballades are the best I've ever heard and no one beats his recording of the first ballade.

What you are saying is not true, there are so many years of music behind us and tons of people that tried their hardest to become great musicians and that means alot of thinking and experimenting , when you hear music that makes you think it is natural it is because the people that wrote this music actually bursted in hard work to make it sound good and easy, so it's the same with players, you have to fo through all sides to really understand a piece of music.

Have to disagree. When your life is that deep in music, the conversation about it cannot help but be distantly abstract. Good luck to you!
