  • 0800032 - U.S. Army Presents MF20 9811, Ivy Flats Film Report - 1962 - 17:35 - Black&White - Ivy Flats, a 1962 tactical military exercise at the Nevada Test Site, involved the detonation of live nuclear rounds fired from the Davy Crockett artillery piece. The Davy Crockett was developed to give U.S. Army units an effective nuclear capability against potentially larger units of Soviet armored forces.
    The Davy Crockett, a recoilless launcher, was the third artillery piece deployed, those earlier being a l55 mm piece designed to fire a nuclear round and a 288 mm mobile piece, commonly called an "atomic cannon." Nuclear-capable ground artillery pieces were gradually replaced by increasingly accurate, nuclear carrying missiles and aircraft.
    The Ivy Flats video shows an Army exercise that was observed by visiting dignitaries, including U.S. Attorney General Robert Kennedy and General Maxwell Taylor, a Presidential military adviser. Participating in the exercise were members of the 4th Mechanized Infantry Division from Ft. Lewis, Washington.
    Ivy Flats was a "battle" between a large simulated enemy armored force and a smaller U.S. force consisting of conventional artillery pieces, which could not stop the pending onslaught. U.S. Army squads then arrive in armored personnel carriers and set up the heavy (l55 mm) and light (120 mm) versions of recoilless launchers. The Davy Crockett fired a nuclear round that decimated the mock opposing force.
    The Davy Crockett was deployed from 1961 to 1971. The heavy version was transported by either an armored personnel carrier or a large truck. The light version was generally carried on and fired from an Army jeep, but could be carried for a short distance and fired by a 3-man team.
    The W-54 nuclear warhead in a projectile was launched by the Davy Crockett and had a subkiloton yield. The projectile was 30 inches long, 11 inches in diameter, and weighed 76 pounds. The l55 mm launcher had a maximum range of 13,000 feet, and the 120 mm could reach a distance of 6,561 feet.

    I was in a deployed Davy Crockett platoon. It was clearly explained how hazardous the duty was. Every man was a volunteer. Most critics think it was dangerous because of radioactive fallout if wind blew toward the launcher--it was really the possibility of counterfire from opposing artillery, since the DC put up an impressive plume of blowback dust when it fired. We trained to boogie out after the shot.

      Thank You Brother for your service! Most of these kids don't understand the difference in threat from 1962 to 2017 (55 years). Its like the difference between your service and TR charging up Kettle/San Juan Hills on horseback with a cavalry sabre overhead.I was in the USAF in Germany where we had F-16 fighters loaded with B-61 nukes that were 50-250 kiloton weapons. Thank God we never had to employ them but I know we would have if it was necessary.Peace!

    We need to test this atomic rifle at our Nevada Test Site and we're going to have a whole bunch of people there. When do you think we should schedule this thing?
    Well the average temperature there is 106 in July so let's have it then!
    I'll l bring lots of brooms to comply with standard decontamination procedures.
    Cool...and maybe some baby oil for protection from the sun.
    Good idea. Oh.... don't forget cigarettes it's probably going to be a long day.

    This is particularly interesting because the W54 in this video only had a blast yield of 0.02 Kilotons of TNT, which is about the same as the FOAB, which is the strongest conventional bomb in recent history.

  • @piliage

    OK. let me get this straight. The effective range of the light three man Davey Crockett is roughly 1900 meters. The fallout zone in this video, with optimal winds, is 1700 meters with a rather unexpected hot spot at roughly 1500-1600 meters.
    Given Davey Crockett died at the Alamo I guess they chose the correct name...

    You know, a lot of people keep saying that the main problem with this weapon was that it didn't have enough range to place the people who fired it outside its "blast zone" which could've ended up radiating the people who fired it. But in this vide, starting with minute 9:38 it clearly explains that the radiation effects wouldn't have been anywhere near as dangerous as the anti-Pentomic division propaganda states. This weapon could fire at over 2.5 km and up to almost 5 km. There was no way radiation would have affected the people who fired it who were sitting far further back anyway since the weapon was remotely fired.

      Ever hear of a neutron bomb? Tanks are largely impervious to nuclear weapons, but the radiation will kill the crew inside. Some steel alloys, especially those used by the Soviets, will become lethally radioactive after being exposed to radiation. The tank would kill its own crew! So, yeah. Radiation FTW!

  • @aleksandersuur9475
    @aleksandersuur9475 6 лет назад +1

    Lulz at everyone harping about the brooms. Lets say you are in a desert, during a nuclear war, covered with radioactive dust and somehow managed to get out with your life intact, whats your next move? Well... first you get a broom and start brushing the dust off. No brainer if there ever was one. If you could change your clothes and have a nice shower that would certainly be preferable, but in absence of such luxuries a broom will do.
    Seriously, the scenario is of a nuclear war, a chance of getting cancer before you die of old age is pretty low on priorities. Surviving long enough to even have cause to worry about such things is a bit more imminent problem.

    I think it should be mentioned that the Davy Crockett was soon deemed useless because of the proximity to radiation lethality. This, along with the Tsar Bomba, was a weapon without a future.

  • @puncheex2
    @puncheex2 11 лет назад

    (part 2) Only the Manhattan project had the wherewithal to do that. Therefore, the only design was the US design; Beria required his staff to create their first bomb to be an exact copy of the Fat Man.
    The hydrogen bomb, OTOH, was an original design by the Russians Kurchatov and Sakharov. They spent a long time trying to figure out how the US had done it, but eventually reproduced the work of Teller-Ulam. Germany did very little beyond a design for a dirty bomb.

  • @lollazers
    @lollazers 13 лет назад

    @digitalobserver That is untrue, the weapon can not be set to fuse at only 20m. The W54 is an enhanced radiation area-denial weapon intended for use against invading Soviet armor. The thought wasn't that the Soviets would charge into it and die, but they'd have to wait until the radiation cleared, at which point American reinforcements would have arrived. Keep in mind at the time the Red Army had superior armor and would have won any conventional conflict.

  • @slamdunk715

    Why does it look like an ordinary detonation of ordinary explosives?

    • @ambylotl
      @ambylotl 6 лет назад

      Well it was too small to make a full-blown mushroom cloud.
      The point of the mini-nuke wasnt so that cities were ground zeroed, it was made so that it could take out large enemy reinforcement or assault routes and make then unuseable for short periods of time; they were made smaller so that it wouldnt harm the soldiers fireing, while still taking out large portions of enemy supplies and men.
      More radiation less destruction.

    • @aleksandersuur9475
      @aleksandersuur9475 6 лет назад +1

      Did it? Certainly looked like a nuke to me, a very small one, true, but still a nuke. Pity they didn't show the simulation rounds exploding properly, that would have made the difference clearer.
      Visually, there is very little difference between a nuclear blast and a regular one. The scale obviously, but suppose you compared a very large conventional blast with very small nuke, yield being equal, how would you tell the difference? The flash obviously, at the moment of detonation the intensity and temperature of light given off is like nothing else, no chemical explosive will ever compare. The sun doesn't compare, lighting and electrical arcs don't compare, no light you have ever seen compares to a nuclear explosion. On a strip of film it's just an completely exposed frame tho, possibly with a hole burned through.

    @tpsossff
    Small?
    Its equal to roughly 20 tonnes of TNT...
    It lethaly irradiates a 350 meter circle...
    This wasn't designed as a direct attack weapon, it was designed to be used as a area denial weapon. It was seposed to be used if the Soviets attack via East Germany, these would be set up along the border and fired to stall the Soviets until a proper defense could be mounted aperantly...

      Ockert Wessels ✈✈✈
      Boys and young men today seldom join the Armed Forces. Back in the 50's and 60's most guys went into the Service. By now the Army has turned into a sort of 'boy's club' rather than a National Duty. I'm glad my 3 grandsons will only go in the military if they choose to but I wonder if the Country wouldn't be better off if most boys did a couple of years in the Service. Like this middle east thing that's been going on for the last 14 years, most families have no stake in the game and can even ignore it if they choose. The USA has lost something in my 57 years. No sense of civic duty started in the 70's with the "Me Generation" and has gone downhill since. Compare the "kids" in videos like these to the same 18-22 year olds you see walking about in 2015. Something went wrong in America...

      +randy109 Less false "duty" to an arbitrary government is always good, it sucks to see kids brainwashed into "patriotism", an absurd concept in the first place.
      However, you actually make a very good point - if everyone was forced to be the government's slave, people wouldn't be able to ignore the ridiculous wars anymore and they'd have a personal reason to stop them. I don't think it's worth it, though.
