    Building on flood plains, infill housing without an extensive overall and revamp of stormwater systems, building on reclaimed land, etc unfortunately all predictably contribute to loss and damage when nature acts as nature. May lessons be learnt, rather than repeated going forward by Councils and Property Developers in the greater Auckland region. Condolences to the families affected and who have lost love ones. Stay indoors and stay safe.

    Someone should see how many flood plains have been used to build housing and how to avoid this happening again

      I have relatives who live on a hillside near Cornwall Park. They have some flooding, their neighbours have it worse, and there are no floodplains anywhere near there.

      That's so what they did in Australia. They built over swamp land and old rubbish tip/landfill areas. That's so not cool.

    My father got caught in the middle of the floods around quay street, he was doing a bus trip to Elton John's concert when the bus's engine got flooded. He ended up spending a good part of the day helping direct traffic since emergency services couldn't get through, crazy stuff. We got lucky, only things our family lost were dad's phone, our car and a few other things. I feel horrible for those who have lost their homes, property and whanau. Those who still don't believe in climate change, just wait, it's only getting worse everyday, and soon anyone could be in natures increasingly aggressive crosshairs.

    This flooding is due to massive blockages that council has failed to up keep. In my area alone I called twice to the council stating there was blocked drains and they needed unblocking. There is so much plastic and rubbish that ends up filling these pipes up that the water has no where to go. I see rubbish everywhere these days. Once upon a time we as a country took a bit of pride and cared about such things. Today it seems no one cares. Pick up rubbish if it's in front of you and if you litter, shame on you. McDonald's and Coke seems to be popular in the waste. Covid masks are everywhere too. Once a green country, not no more. Shame on councils throughout NZ for not getting a grip on maintenance of infrastructure and investing in innovative recycling systems. Millions spent on our new waste system that every house must have yet we are still years behind in recycling and our laws to protect the environment.

    How...yes extreme downpours but can we not add that the infrastructure of AUCKLAND is old and needs upgrading MR BROWN (Auckland mayor) OR SHOULD we be more concerned about the council lunch/dinner budgets, car rentals, and overnight stays?????
    It was a given that due to Climate change catastrophes like this was a given.....BUT AUCKLAND CITY COUNCIL AND MAYOR BROWN.....let us just close the gate AFTER THE BLOODY horse has bolted.

    Because of Jacinda’s insistence to help woke people understand basic needs from the public podium, people aren’t able to think for themselves and want to blame the mayor for declaring a state of emergency too late for the fact that they couldn’t think for themselves and got flooded out. It’s pretty basic, have a plan, be prepared

    • @user-jy8zb2wc8l
      @user-jy8zb2wc8l Год назад

      Yeah... the plan is called having a mechanism where a mayor gives permission for Civil Defence to activate emergency protocols and resources that are not normally their day-to-day business operations. Jacinda didn't invent that, by the way. It is mass disaster planning 101: Have a plan, be prepared... to FOLLOW THE PLAN.... whether you are a citizen, or a firefighter, or a mayor, all should have/would have had designated mass disaster plans in place.

    • @monzer0172
      @monzer0172 Год назад

      umm? NO, weather watch explained it had to do with the Tonga Volcano Eruption, so lots of wet weather and storms across the globe due to the huge amount of water spewed into the stratosphere. The Antarctic had had record low temperatures for the past two years, which is conveniently ignored, so NO.

    • @maigepresents5840
      @maigepresents5840 Год назад

      It's certainly one of many contributing factors.. decades of undergunding in infrastructure upgrades is what caused the extensive flooding and will only get worse as more high density housing and shoddy development practices are approved by the council.
