I think that when someone moves out of town, then it should be mainly his responsability to try keep the friendship alive. But instead, Will expected like always for Mike to take the initiative and had a jealous response to his relationship with El. So I think the main issue here is that Will deep down wants more than just friendship with Mike. This then leads to unrealistic expectations, jealousy and this disconect then leads to an overall awkward tension.

However, Will is also to blame for never having been really supportive of Mike's & El's relationship, unlike for example Lucas tried to be in S3. Notice how Mike & Will finally bonded in Episode 4 when Mike talked about his fight with El and Will offered some encouraging words. Immediately in the scene after that, Mike then apologized to El about how he is being acting. So I think that this type of relationship support has been previously always missing from Will's side, which also contributed to things becoming awkward between them.

As someone who grew up in the 1980s, it was my experience that guys don't hug. It was seen as really weird to do that and you get labeled "gay" which was one of the worst stigmas to have at the time. You might find that weird or stupid, but it's how it was and as a presumably heterosexual male, Mike is probably really weirded out by the whole thing, but doesn't want to completely lose his friendship with Will, so he tolerates it.

Mike is still a very caring character. His main flaw is just that he sometimes oblivious to what the people around him are feeling (I guess he got that from his parents). But when he gets it, there is nobody who cares more than he does.
I soneties feel so bad for Will. Like in season 3 how Mike and Lucas ignored him and didn't want to spend time with him anymore like old times. And he went through so much like being kidnapped from the demogorgon and being possessed from the mind flayer. And how Mike called him a douchebag for nothing and being a jerk to him. True, Will should have stood up for El when Angela humiliated her in public but he just stood there doing nothing. But if you were in that situation, you wouldn't know how to handle it or what to do at that exact time since it happened so fast. But yeah Will one of my favourites.

I think the failed hug was just a misundestanding. If you look at Mike's hand gesture at the beginning, then you can see that he was going for a "bro handshake", while Will was going for the hug. The result was then this painfully awkward pat on the shoulder. And as for the "what's that". Well, I think this was supposed to be a conversation starter from Mike's side. But since Will was hurt by the failed hug, he said that it's nothing, which killed the conversation and made things awkward again.

if anyone’s curious, Mike thinks Will is gay. In season 3, Mike says to Will, “it’s not my fault you don’t like girls”. You can tell Mike goes in for the “bro” handshake when he first sees Will but is thrown off when Will goes for the hug. Not at all saying Mike is homophobic, i believe he just has the common misconception that “all gay guys are attracted to other guys” and thinks Will likes him or might get it confused on their relationship and where they stand.

They all have been through traumatic events and have all delt with it differently. Then Will being 14 and 15 people excuse the awkwardness as “Will likes Mike”, just because some people pointed out the ships doesn’t mean that it is true. We don’t know his sexuality and I don’t think he can try with his sexuality when he’s been through a ton of trauma. I mean we’ll find out, but will already has no character, I really want the producers to give him more interactions with the show and reunite all of them instead of just making Will gay just for the sake of it. Plus, all that’s gonna do is provide for the fans than the show itself or character development because Will is still the same shy, timid kid. But we’ll have to wait and see.

Note that Mike is fully aware of how awkward El and Will are making his visit, but pretends to be oblivious to such stuff. Mike totally knows about Will's feelings too - he even had to tell Will to back off "...we're friends! We're *friends*". Even though Mike is occasionally uncomfortable with Will's attachment to him, he clearly still has no quarms about being friends. S4 also showed Will coming to terms with the fact that he can't be reliant on Mike forever, hell - he even started finding the strength to be there for Mike (whereas it's always been the other way round)

But when Mike was having relationship issues, he immediately tried to give him (bad) relationship advice. While Will was just annoyed and not sensitive at all about him being lovesick. That's where the issue really lies. Will having a more supportive attitude to Mike's and El's relationship would be also a good way to strengthen his bond with Mike. But he always approached their relationship from a place of jealousy, because deep down it appears that he wants to be more than just friends with Mike.

I grew up in the 1980s, and I can say that as a guy you NEVER hug your friends. Back then that would've been seen as effeminate or "gay." You can say that's ridiculous, but it's how it was, and given that Stranger Things takes place in the 1980s, it's not surprising that a heterosexual teenage male (who flew out to see his girlfriend first and foremost) wouldn't hug another guy, even if that guy was a longtime friend. It just wasn't something you did.
Damn rewatching this I kind of feel for Will. I had a best friend who completely changed as we got older. She got loads of boyfriends and I always felt ignored all the time. Our friendship changed and that shit hurt Fr. It’s not that I didn’t like boys, I did but was self conscious especially since I was overweight. At the same time I just wasn’t concerned with relationships. I just enjoyed laughing with my friend and having sleepovers. I was like Will. I soneties feel so bad for Will. Like in season 3 how Mike and Lucas ignored him and didn't want to spend time with him anymore like old times. And he went through so much like being kidnapped from the demogorgon and being possessed from the mind flayer. And how Mike called him a douchebag for nothing and being a jerk to him. True, Will should have stood up for El when Angela humiliated her in public but he just stood there doing nothing. But if you were in that situation, you wouldn't know how to handle it or what to do at that exact time since it happened so fast. But yeah Will one of my favourites.
Is it just me or is Mike seeming nervous with Will here? Refusing to give him a hug and just awkwardly pats him. Looking over and being like "u-um what's that?" And then a short "cool" looking dead at him. Theres something going on thay he's not saying. Dont know if its because he knows Will likes him and is trying to deal with it or if he likes Will?
I think the failed hug was just a misundestanding. If you look at Mike's hand gesture at the beginning, then you can see that he was going for a "bro handshake", while Will was going for the hug. The result was then this painfully awkward pat on the shoulder.
And as for the "what's that". Well, I think this was supposed to be a conversation starter from Mike's side. But since Will was hurt by the failed hug, he said that it's nothing, which killed the conversation and made things awkward again.

if anyone’s curious, Mike thinks Will is gay. In season 3, Mike says to Will, “it’s not my fault you don’t like girls”. You can tell Mike goes in for the “bro” handshake when he first sees Will but is thrown off when Will goes for the hug. Not at all saying Mike is homophobic, i believe he just has the common misconception that “all gay guys are attracted to other guys” and thinks Will likes him or might get it confused on their relationship and where they stand.

They all have been through traumatic events and have all delt with it differently. Then Will being 14 and 15 people excuse the awkwardness as “Will likes Mike”, just because some people pointed out the ships doesn’t mean that it is true. We don’t know his sexuality and I don’t think he can try with his sexuality when he’s been through a ton of trauma. I mean we’ll find out, but will already has no character, I really want the producers to give him more interactions with the show and reunite all of them instead of just making Will gay just for the sake of it. Plus, all that’s gonna do is provide for the fans than the show itself or character development because Will is still the same shy, timid kid. But we’ll have to wait and see.

Note that Mike is fully aware of how awkward El and Will are making his visit, but pretends to be oblivious to such stuff. Mike totally knows about Will's feelings too - he even had to tell Will to back off "...we're friends! We're *friends*". Even though Mike is occasionally uncomfortable with Will's attachment to him, he clearly still has no quarms about being friends. S4 also showed Will coming to terms with the fact that he can't be reliant on Mike forever, hell - he even started finding the strength to be there for Mike (whereas it's always been the other way round)

@@mrdr0161 Not all down on Will alone. But I do think that when someone moves out of town, then it's mainly his responsibility to take the initiative when it comes to keeping the relationship alive. And while it is true that romantic relationships shouldn't put friendships aside, its also true that friends should be supportive of their friends relationships. Which Will never really has been.
For example, Lucas was at the beginning of S3 annoyed as well about how clingy Mike's relationship with El was. But when Mike was having relationship issues, he immediately tried to give him (bad) relationship advice. While Will was just annoyed and not sensitive at all about him being lovesick. That's where the issue really lies. Will having a more supportive attitude to Mike's and El's relationship would be also a good way to strengthen his bond with Mike. But he always approached their relationship from a place of jealousy, because deep down it appears that he wants to be more than just friends with Mike.

I grew up in the 1980s, and I can say that as a guy you NEVER hug your friends. Back then that would've been seen as effeminate or "gay." You can say that's ridiculous, but it's how it was, and given that Stranger Things takes place in the 1980s, it's not surprising that a heterosexual teenage male (who flew out to see his girlfriend first and foremost) wouldn't hug another guy, even if that guy was a longtime friend. It just wasn't something you did.

Damn rewatching this I kind of feel for Will. I had a best friend who completely changed as we got older. She got loads of boyfriends and I always felt ignored all the time. Our friendship changed and that shit hurt Fr. It’s not that I didn’t like boys, I did but was self conscious especially since I was overweight. At the same time I just wasn’t concerned with relationships. I just enjoyed laughing with my friend and having sleepovers. I was like Will. Never wanting to walk with her and her boyfriend because I definitely felt like a third wheel when I did. But I do think Will has romantic feelings for Mike so it probably hurts more. Or he could just be really sad that his friendship with Mike basically faded away. If it’s the latter, I feel it Will 😪
