This is so iconic that it was the first music video ever to go to the National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, that's how impactful and revolutionary this was.
Yayy fire video!! First of all for someone who claims to know nothing about Michael props for knowing he had a skin disorder vitiligo! No, he did not "bleach" his skin, this autoimmune disorder essentially strips the pigment on the skin and causes the skin to have white patches or blotches, initally he tried to cover them with dark make up, but then since it spread so much throughout his body he couldn't do that anymore and it was easier to go to a lighter shade, his make up artist talked about that, he needed to apply treatment creams to even his skin out, these creams were APPROVED for people with a severe state of vitiligo only. It was very hard for him to the point where he could not go out in the sun without an umbrella, since there was no melanin to protect the skin from damage, he looked more and more pale as it was taking over and that's why he wore make up, to create a more natural appearance. It always caused a lot of speculation, when he finally spoke about it publicly people didn't believe him cause the disorder was barely known. The media always pushed this rumor that he bleached his skin for decades because they said he "wanted to be white" but that was false. When he died, his autopsy report confirmed that he did have vitiligo, even though some ignorant people still choose to believe otherwhise.
This is the most ICONIC music video OF ALL TIME (aka short film as Michael used to call them). This was released in 1983 and revolutionized the whole concept of "music video" today! No one had made such an innovative video before! And I'm sorry but Juice Wrld doesn't even compare with Michael, he is the greatest entertainer! ❤ he pretty inspired and influenced every modern artist today, Bruno Mars, The Weeknd, Justin Bieber, Chris Brown,Beyonce, etc... all of them talked about many times how much Michael was an inspiration to them! It was with the performance of Billie Jean at Motown 25 and this short film that Michael became a global MEGASTAR, people of all races and ages all around the world LOVED HIM!
I was born in ‘68. I had the honor of watching the Jackson 5 when Michael was young! Their music was amazing! Michael came back into my world in the eighties when he went solo. I was mad for him! Such a beautiful man! Wonderful music! There will never be another like him. He’s one of a kind. You will encounter all kinds of stories about him as you look him up. Take it all with a grain of salt. There’s no denying that he was gifted from birth. There’s another “movie” out there that was hard to come by several years back. I think it’s easier to find now. The title is either “Ghost” or “Ghosts.” It’s fantastic! It’s worth finding and watching. Thanks for this.
I see a lot of Motown 25th anniversary performance of Billie Jean it's great but if you do PLEASEE react to the full medley performance with his brothers singing I Want You Back/I'll Be There/Never Can Say Goodbye and then lastly Billie Jean.
John Landis produced this. Here's the back story. Michael Jackson saw the movie, "An American Werewolf in London" which was produced by John Landis. He contacted John Landis afterward and told him that he wanted to change into a wolf like they did in the movie and this was is where the idea came from. I remember when this came out in 1982, I think, on Halloween. Everyone waited with great anticipation and MJ didn't let us down. Vincent Price was the narrator on the graveyard scene, an old actor of horror and a legend from the 50's.
I cried watching this, thank you for posting, I was 6 years old when this video came out and I remember being transfixed watching it (and terrified) 😊 I fell asleep on sofa after seeing it and had a dream of his face at the end with the scary eyes and I woke up with a start! Needless to say he became my favourite artist of all time and still is today. His death was a massive loss to the world I cried so much and couldn’t go in to work! It’s great seeing young people like you enjoying his music, we need you guys to keep his legacy going, he was a superstar the likes of which we’ll never see again
Everyone back in the 1900s knew of Michael Jackson, from the age of 10, MJ ruled the music world not just his music ,his dance moves really rocked. We couldn't wait for his next video. FYI you should start with early Jackson 5
I grew up with Michael, starting with the Jackson 5 and have loved him all my life! He is probably the most talented musician, all-around, ever! Congrats on finding him at last!
To think see his work with the Jackson 5 you’d never think he could create a song like this. He could always dance but this song and video are so dark toned.
You should start from the beginning and throw some Jackson 5 reactions in there. MJ is a rare talent, and no one today is on his level. The guy makes more money in death than some of these artists do today 😂
No, Michael Jackson didn't come up with the concept of transforming into a creature by looking at the moon. This folkloric concept is called "lycanthropy" and is almost 2000 years old. Also Juice World?????? I'm happy you are broadening your musical horizons.
Can't even begin to tell you how impactful MJ was after this. I mean I don't think people these days can even quantify it. Everyone all thinks Taylor swift is all that. Just let me tell you she, Beyonce, Drake etc combined probably get to 20% of MJs impact I mean it was insane in the 80s. I'm willing to bet a month's wages the *entire* world not only heard of him, but loved his music.
Bro real deal. Michael used to scare me too with the way his appearance kept changing but that was because I wasn't aware of what was happening to him when I was younger. After getting the full story, I couldn't help but feel sorry for him. As for his voice, he'd use his higher pitched voice for the public but his deep voice is sort of a casual thing that he eventually starting using in public. But for real though, Michael was untouchable! His concerts would be unimaginable with fans fainting by the slight move of his fingertips. He would murder people with his presence.
Fun fact Thriller wasn't originally going to be thriller Michael recorded vocals for a song called Starlight Sun that had a similar beat to Thriller that version can also be found on youtube
This wasn’t considered a short film at the time. It was known as a Michael Jackson event. Every release he had in the 80s was in the evening around 8 o’clock. There was no cable no internet 90% of people only had 8-10 Channels. No one before ever did this, after they tried but couldn’t match the Michael Jackson Magic 🪄
I'm pretty sure the moon transformation trope is an age-old myth concept...ppl thought stuff like that long before television existed. But I could be wrong. Anyway, another cool reaction.
Do you want to go in chronological order of his music videos? I mean there are many Jackson Five and Jackson's songs to hear but if you want to go in order of his solo work start with the Off The Wall album. Watch Rock With You, She's Out of My Life and Don't Stop Until You Get Enough. Then watch Say, Say, Say a duet with Paul McCartney who was a Beatle. Then move into Thriller with Beat It, Billie Jean, Pretty Young Thing which does not have a music video as well as Human Nature and Lady In My Life. After that you will go into the BAD album era that has more bangers.
Wow. Count me in those who can't believe. But respect your honesty. As a kid when MJ was a kid, I grew up with him. Interested for your take. Let's go!
MJ was way more versatile as an artist to anyone to ever exist not even joking he’s The King Of Music,King Of Pop in my opinion is too limiting of a title for him he did so many genres and really he’s incomparable! The opening message for the Thriller short film is mainly placed their cause at the time MJ was getting threats by his own religion at the time the Jehovah’s Witness that if he released the short film he’d be kicked out of it so MJ placed this message their but originally he was going to burn and destroy the entire tapes of the short film it was a last minute decision but it shows u how much pull/influence MJ had that even his own religious group was worried about the short film’s impact also the Thriller Rap is done by the one & only horror movie icon Vincent Price, this short film/music video is truly legendary it’s second to none!✍🏽👑💯
I remember when i first saw Thriller - i used to so scared of that zombie with the foaming mouth lmao I really reccomend seeing motown 25 but also the 1969 Ed Sullivan show "The Jackson 5 "Medley: Stand!, Who's Loving You, I Want You Back" it won't dissapoint I was about 10 or something, we had the HIStory Greatest Hits VHS and I saw it with my sister - I kept hiding behind the pillows i was so scared of them zombies haha. fun fact: Somehow I also have a 92' Who is It poster from my father. When Thriller got released on the tv, everyone was glued to the tv, it had been like an event and onwards with other broadcastings It's one of the big 3 music videos that made him very famous - the others being "Billie Jean" and "Beat It." The college reaction must have been so hilarious, i mean - this man had 4.8 BILLION fans when he was with us Also it is no lie that both Bruno Mars and The Weeknd were inspired from his music also some fun facts: Thriller is the best selling album of time, selling 70 million copies worldwide, and 1 million copies per week within it's release in 1982 Michael has a song with Michael Jordan where they play basketball when you mentioned disney, not long after this video he shot a short film named 'Captain EO' which recently was made Star Wars canon
He added the disclaimer because he was brought up as a Jehovah's Witness, so the JWs were pushing for him to cancel the video. The disclaimer was his way of saying he's not in the occult which is how the JWs perceived it
I can understand that you thought what you did about MJ because the media crucified this man after Thriller up to his death and even afterwards. They created a false narrative about him to make him look like a bad guy which they have done to many black male celebrities. You need to understand MJ tore down barriers for the black community. Thriller, Billie Jean and Beat It were the first black videos played on MTV. He was the first to sell 40 million records. The release of his music videos were aired during the prime time hours on several of local channels at the same time. He was one of the first to really break down thos barriers where all people of every skin color, young to old loved this guy. He didn't even start at Thriller. This guy's discography of great music started when he was a ten year old kid. Trust me you will not be disappointed getting to know his music and him as a person. He was a beautiful man inside and out. His music is timeless. People all over the world knows his music. Don't let the media or the haters dictate what he was about. See for yourself. There has to be something about this guy to have made multi of millions people love him.
Hmmmm you don’t know but you knew about his glove and the moonwalk, now you know about his skin. You must have seen him even if short Burt’s!!!!! No disrespect but what you are saying does not quite add up. BUT I hope you enjoy the journey.
If it helps out adding things together, a lot of the information I know about and talk about is just information I get from talking with my friends/relatives about him. Everything I've mentioned so far, I mostly heard from my friends/relatives. The skin, and the moonwalk. When it comes to the glove, idk why but when I saw the BJ concert, I just for some reason remembered a bright shining glove. I don't know if that was the same glove or not, and I can't remember if I had seen that glove in my toddler days or not, but it looked extremely familiar to me. Sometimes I dont even understand my own thoughts, believe me I get it lol. It's kinda hard for me to explain things sometimes.
Ok, Let's talk about it son.... Never ever hearing of Michael ackson is crazy, but... I don't even blame you, this generation is so closed off musically, it doesn't surprise me that you never heard of the Greatest music artist in history. And I'm not saying that because I'm a huge fan, this is literally his moniker... The greatest artist ever, The King of Pop. but if you really want to be blown away..... since you thought Michael Jackson was Michael Jordan... again the Greatest Basketball player ever, (not a big fan, but I know what is good) Guess what, Check out Jam by MJ, because it has BOTH guys in the video.
