What strikes me is how aged they all look! They could all pass for late thirties but are in reality mid to early twenties. A hard, hard era to live through.
Love how most are described as fresh complexion and proportional in build. For a bunch of criminals they were well dressed. You did a lot of research for this post appreciated.
Most are described as such in this record. I suppose fresh is subjective as to what that means. Thank you for your comment.
The pale probobly meat opiate users. Dirty someone living rough on the streets maby
Fascinating .
That “well dressed” appearance was the most basic of clothing from that period.
Did you notice they were all mostly very small people?
It’s like a parade of criminal dwarves 😂
Of course they're well dressed they're thieves. When I was at it I was always well dressed
I've subbed as your channel is addictive ,I especially love these mug shot ones ,as my grandad was a bookies runner Fulham born 1910 I was around all the old slang ,he was a spiv in the war proper smart tall well connected , couldn't walk down a street without somebody calling after him 🇬🇧🍀👍🏼
Welcome to the channel! I hope you find lots of content here to interest you. Thank you for your comment.
In the 1930's they were also experiencing the Great Depression, I think it was all over Europe as well as the United States, there weren't very many jobs during the Great Depression, so the men had to do what they needed to do to survive. Even in the United States, many people had to live in shantytowns called Hoovervilles, not only did the stock market crash in 1929, but they also had the dust bowl, and I'm sure it was the same hard times in Great Britain. It's really sad to see that these men, just wanted to have a job, support their families, but unfortunately during those times, there just weren't enough jobs to go around. There might have been one job and you have 50 or more men fighting for the same position. Also, they didn't have any help from the government either.
Literally fighting for work especially around the docks being set against each other to fight to feed the families it will be something that isn’t forgotten for decades
Thank God for all those low crime neighborhoods supported through government welfare programs
2021 Concerned that jobs are being now taken by AI TECH just announced a ton of jobs being cut by Tesco in south london/
It was the same here in Australia in the 1930’s, my grandfather grew up in the inner city of Sydney and it was a slum in those days with high unemployment and crime was rife. It was the time of the razor gangs ruling the streets and many criminals had the tell-tale scar on their face from clashes with rival gangs. There is a series of mugshots of that time that was displayed by the NSW police museum in Sydney and available online. The photos are very striking and in their own way quite artistic.
Yes, the Great Depression or ''the hard 30's'' were all over Western Europe, as well as in America, with the exception of Germany were people flourished. Meanwhile in Stalin's Russia there were purges and millions were killed or sent to the Gulag.
That one guy who was 5' 10.5" could have been a basketball center back then.
Such strange times..when police officers actually patrolled the streets..what a crazy odd thing to do..
happens Still .patrol foot called It's Ever
The average height of British WWI recruits was 5' 6". Their officers were usually taller. It was probably childhood nutrition and household/neighborhood hygiene that had the most effect on keeping down height. These men probably came from the 'lower classes,' and thus they would have come from the bottom of the height range.
Lions led by donkeys.Tall donkeys.
So many laborers. There were no opportunities for thousands of men who instead had to wreck their bodies digging ditches etc, or else by doing very dangerous work with no safety equipment for little money. And if they didn't do it the next guy would. I believe that being poor at the time led to men who, in better times, would not get into trouble. Not all of them of course - no doubt that some of these guys were career criminals - but I think most of them just wanted to feed their families. There was no welfare, no food stamps, no unemployment benefits, no time or money to go to school and learn a trade, and God forbid if they were injured and couldn't work, well that was just too bad. It must have been rough.

I'm cross that RUclips didn't notify me as soon as you uploaded this...I love your work.
Do you have your notification settings set as 'All notifications' ? There is a RUclips Help Centre page 'Fix Subscriber Notification Problems' that has a notifications trouble-shooter for problems that you could look at.
@@FactFeast Yep, I did that... that's why I'm extra cross.
The poor are still much shorter than the rich in England. An obvious sign of the nutritional divide in the class system.
Enjoyed this, and so well narrated too!
That’s fantastic, thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the presentation. There are a couple more videos like this on the channel should you be interested.
@@FactFeast already watched ☘
They all look about 20 years older than they are…. 😞
Thank you, appreciate all your work & efforts. Keep it going 🙂
My pleasure 😊 Thanks for your support!
Firstly would like say a only just found your channel but ive watched most of your videos
Thank you and welcome to the channel. I’m glad you enjoy the content!
If you turned this into a drinking game and took a shot every time a person was described as fresh and proportionate you would be dead!
Thank you for posting this video
You're welcome. Thanks for your comment!
Most of these men were so handsome… I did used the word ‘most’. But all had interesting faces.
This is really good.A home town for these fellows would also be good.
How come all the criminals are good looking men? 😳🤔
Yeah, and they have cool hair, too! :D
They all had “fresh” complexion.
@@lauraann4014 🤣 LoL
Yup I thought a few were pretty hot myself until the height came up.
God knows what a unfresh criminal complexion would look like.🤷♂️😂
It would be interesting to know what the police definition of fresh was!
@@FactFeast Now guessing i was not the only one waiting to see a not so fresh complexion just to see the comparison 😂
Keep these coming absolutely fascinating 👏
@@FactFeast I'm assuming based on the context it meant free from noticable signs of disease or injury could be wrong though 🤷♀️
After watching the whole thing it made me very curious what the police of the day meant by 'fresh' and 'proportionate'. Some looked down right sketchy!
James Dick is described as having a ‘pale’ complexion, so ‘fresh’ could be how they describe someone as healthy looking.
What a great video. Thanks!
You’re welcome, thank you. I’m really glad you enjoyed the content!
Some of my ancestors came from this part of Britain and so this video was particularly interesting for my family . However, it looks like they were law-abiding citizens in the 1930’s! Thank goodness. Not since my Grandfather (and his two friends) were "arrested for trying to join up with the army in 1914 they were aged 16, but were told they were too young they were taken home to their parents and told that they were too young to join up. They have been kept in the cells overnight and return to the parents the next day it turned out that they hadn't really been arrested but kept them at the police station as a warning to behave in the cells in the future. They all had shipbuilding apprenticeships so their jobs were necessary for the war effort so they could never join up anyway.
Great video 🍿
Thanks for your support! I appreciate you taking the time to comment.
Omg! My grandad is here!... only joking. He was too clever to get caught 🤣
Wow they were all so short then , so far the tallest was 5 " 7
Great video
Glad you enjoyed the presentation! Thanks for taking the time to watch and leave a comment.
Freeman, Hardy Willis was still a popular shoe shop when I was a lass in the 70's - 80's.
The best shop to get your school shoes ,if yer maw could afford it lol
Excellent
Thank yo u
You are most welcome! Thanks for the visit.
@@FactFeast I'm a subscriber as of yesterday ..great channel
Welcome to the channel Gma Nette and thank you!
I think fresh complexion might have meant clean shaved 🤔 or olive complexion there was only one labeled pale complexion musted have been very light in compared to the others may have worked indoors while the others didn't
Wait impatiently for your excellent videos.
I hope you found this subject of interest?
Looking at that old film it seems as though hat makers were not going redundant.
Short men in them days!
Extreme poverty
But all propotionate.
I was thinking the same thing. Short dudes.
Thank you
They are all so short!!
I know, right?
Excellent 👍🇮🇪
Glad you enjoyed the presentation! Thank you.
Some of these guys were really nice-looking. That wouldn't have helped them commit their burglaries...but it may have helped them find ladies to hide them afterwards. 😁
Love these.
Thank you! I think it's so interesting to connect real people and some information about their lives.
@@FactFeast I agree. Some of them were so young. It makes me wonder what became of them.
Good
Great that you enjoyed watching. Thanks for your support!
That last quote is why men don't feel they should've stepped in . That's some hate😮
Where?
And just like that.......my day is made😁
Fantastic! Great to know you found this so interesting, thank you.
It seems like ALL of these men were blue-eyed and excessively short.
Should have done a Geordie accent.lol Subscribed.
Welcome to the channel! Thank you.
This is the time of the great depression the reason they are well appointed is cos they were actively looking for work but if you can't get work you stave so don't judge
Great channel keep it coming
Y'all some of these folks look like my cousins lololol
Do you have access to photos of Hackney Workhouse at the beginning of the last century?
What does “complexion: fresh” mean?? I’ve never heard of a fresh complexion!
Not grubby ingrained with dirt. Clean skin.
Indeed
Build... Proportionate... All of the them. Kinda think that description wasn't needed!
You had to be looking fresh back then.
They where pretty fresh
seems like the police at the time would have done well to focus their attention and police forces at construction sites and at the back of warehouses
How are you doing ihope you are fine thank you for your wonderful cultural historical channel you are as guide tourists for all people around world especially us as foreigners subscribers want to learn new information improve our English language as well as always iam gathering key points about topics you mentioned briefly here it’s between years 1910 and 1930series of 7500 special photographs were taken by New South Wales police department group of criminals central in year 1921 this negative was found wrapped in pater sleeve on which is written group of criminals central 1921 thank you for your great efforts stay safe blessed good luck to you your family friends
Thank you for watching! These photos are from Newcastle, England.
Loved watching the video, as much as I like 19 crimes red wine 🍷 😊 in their description and very much with the height being just over 5 ft and shorter in woman. My attention was with poverty and nutrition during that period, welfare would have been hardly anything, or the parish fund was the church fund and wasn't actual money. Early childhood nutrition and during adolescent is growth period, their diet would have been bland, and probably calcium. My great grandmother was Irish decent, move to Newcastle, later moved on, would have moved from place to place. I know they couldn't find work, as her role in the community sustained her. And the work she food was dreadful. My grandfather could actually read and write which disadvantage him. History lesson 😊
19th, 20th & 21st Centuries Constabulary. Police.
Strange to think the current oldest woman in britian.was open in.1909 only one year younger than some of these people and the oldest woman in the world is 1903 which makes her older than a few of the people hear, crazy
It strikes me how short the men were back then. Many would be an inch or two shorter than me as a female.
A lot of cockneys were short. Except Dick Van Dyke that is. 😉
Poor nutrition.
Such a shame that this is spoilt by the text being too obvious. It makes the photos less watchable.
Complexion: fresh. WTH?? Lol. 😂
Can tell they didn’t have a good stable diet as kids as they are all mostly very short
Did they breed short men back then I wonder! None are 6 feet. But I do ĺove this video.
First guy looks like Robbie Williams
Thomas Barker, M O, Mick Jaggers' great grandfather....
Yeah
Short kings
These men were short!
Very interesting a-lot like the criminals of today, only the jails were worse.
20:00 Marks - Buffalo Bill on right hand.
What exactly does fresh complexion mean. Pale white? Non-scarred? No identifying marks?
Men did know how to groom and dress in those days even if you were poor and the hair styles are here today again love the hair, you don't have to be tall it's all if you got game if you know what I mean some look like they could charm there're way out of any situation somethings never change
They were very small back in the day
Thank you.
It may be tempting to suspect that all poor people were apt to become criminals. Yet none of my Victorian born forebears and their parents and siblings did, although I don't know how the hard work didn't kill them. My paternal side were all around 6 ft as men and my paternal female side around 5'5" for women. My maternal side were all shorties.
Even then it was known that once someone had a criminal conviction they had even less chance of honest work. No one would trust working with a known thief even if they only had their lunch that could be stolen. Also no one wanted to chance a thief blaming them for what they themselves had stolen.
Thieving from other poor people was considered particularly low behaviour. They were shunned by all but other thieves and fences.
They had some nice hair styles back then.
Height is also due to genetics. If your family is ‘small’ then you will be. One side of my family is taller then the other side
Law & Order.
Very interesting. Average height seems much lower back then.
Poor nutrition during childhood was the usual cause back then. People had many children at that time and it was difficult providing for all of them. The same short height can be seen today in poorer nations. North Korea is a good example. Place a North Korean next to a South Korean (or most any Westerner) and the former's height really stands out.
Eyes....1....John dodgson, eyebrows 1.
They are all short men, only one was 5'10''.
What is a fresh complexion? I hate to sound ignorant, maybe it’s because I’m from a different time and in a different culture but I’m confused
It’s hard to be sure what the police definition for ‘fresh’ at that time would have been. Perhaps a healthy appearance.
Men was short back then. Not a single one of them was 6ft tall. I think the tallest there was 5ft 10and a half inches.
all short not one 6 footer
Your Newcastle accent is a wee bit off 😂👍
Shortiesssss
Just shows you that height has increased over the average since then. Only 2 of these scallywags was over 5’6
Notice that between them all not one of them used a knife or gun, very different to these days.
They would have been executed.Maybe why?
Mugshot,s with their caps on
Necessary in those days when everyone wore hats. People look so different with or without hats.
They are so clean shaven or proper haircuts even for being in poverty and without running water often
Darby Sabine was interned for being Italian and his son was fighting for the RAF lol you couldn’t make it up
They were a good looking lot, even if good for nothing.
Men used to be SOOOOO much shorter!!
I'll take these guys over the scofflaws of today any old time!
Pitty you couldn't use the Geordie accent when recitng the words they spoke, I am a Geordie and not many up here would have spoken with the accent you use to portray the time.
Fatty Potter build proportional ?😁
Not fat! Probably skinny, like very tall people sometimes called shorty.
5'4" 😆
Completion Fresh = White/IC1
So much for physiognomy. Most of them look like ordinary guys.
All dwarfs 😄
I hate that the narration sounds like a ham actor
