- Russia’s announcement that it will hold live-fire drills near the south Kuril Islands has concerned Japan. Japan lodged two protests with Russia after Moscow announced military drills near the contested islands. Kremlin responded by saying the drill shouldn’t concern Japan. Moscow has also said it will test fire some missiles near the islands and close to Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). Kunashiri is one of several disputed islands off Japan's northern main island of Hokkaido.

The Kuril Islands aren't disputed by anyone, but Japan. At the 1945 Yalta Conference, the Soviet Union was awarded the islands in return for entering the Pacific war against the Japanese. You lose a war, you pay - that's how it always worked. Vae victis.

Actually the dispute outlasted the end of 1945 and was never fully resolved regards four islands. Given the majority of the Kurils, Stalin, per usual wanted all down to and including Hokkaido, which is where US brakes were applied. Read again.
This is utterly stupid, essentially clickbait. The Kuril islands were annexed by the SU after WWII and the only one "disputing" it are the Japanese themselves. Russia has no real beef with Japan and the Japanese government only issues these protests for the heck of it.

In 1945, the Soviet Union liberated Manchuria from the Japanese garrison and handed it back to China, while it took back the Sakhalin Islands and reunited them with the Sakhalin Oblast in the Russian Soviet Socialist Republic.

Y'all need to take in consideration that Russia's economy will no be able to hold on to two fronts at once in a war scenery.
When it comes to a direct military confrontation, Russia as of now could be only matched by the US. It takes a lot of time to build up a military.
As for the economy, the potential is far more important. While Russia may not catch up to the likes of China, India and the US (at least in this century), if their geopolitical game goes to plan they have every opportunity to be the world's 4th largest by some time mid-century.

Manchuria technically was part of the Japanese empire since Japan conquered and annexed that region of China and Mongolia.
