    Totally agree ! - I was told for my course to take my teenage son with me to the shop and when he rolled his eyes at my selection - that was the right one to buy ! And he was correct.

    What sold me on my fashionable bucket hat was when I looked up in a casual contest last year, just before slowing down to enter a thermal, only to see a metal super blanik about to pass over me. I'd not have seen it with the baseball hat brim, and the metal fuselage also meant that neither my nor their FLARMs saw each other. I'd have pulled up into their bottom for sure. I missed the thermal, did not find another one, and shortly landed, but glad I did not destroy a glider nor did I have to bail out and use my chute. Yah, that old bucket hat might have been a life saver!
    Note about the baseball hats ... you can pull that metal head-divot-maker right off. It's a decoration and does nothing to hold the hat together, but visibility (for you) and protecting your ears and neck ... get a bucket hat Gilligan.

      While we talk about buckets, I found that if the passenger sitting behind you has restricted viewing, a few more seat cushions will allow him/ her a better view of where the horizon sits and therefore is able to more efficiently combine their view with their balance organs and not suffer motion sickness. ( I know this from my experience while carrying passengers of short stature or young kids.).🇦🇺👍

    I was told by one of my old CFI's that if you wear a baseball hat and you hit turbulence and you bang into the canopy the button on the top can exert enough pressure on your head that it could crack you skull or coarse a concussion.

    Some more points.
    Ever had a sunburn on your ears? I remember an article in Soaring (SSA) magazine years back from a US Midwest country doctor relating how many ears he had had to amputate over the years from his mostly Scandinavian Central European descendant harvester cap carrying farming for a living patients due to incipient skin cancer. Ugh.
    Another one, no zippers, no riveted vents on your soaring cap. Helps a lot to keep nasty scratches away from the pricy canopy.
    One bug bear, why only one size? There are people out there who need a 23 or 24 inch hat. Either due to lots of/ long hair, and/ or due to an, err, big head.
    I wonder whether a keffiyeh would be a viable alternative. Lots of sun where they come from.

    • @PureGlide
      @PureGlide  9 месяцев назад

      Great points! My hats are just what I have access to via my embroidery service unfortunately. One is stretch fit however, which should fit a few people!

      A Plexiglas canopy blocks UV-B rays but not UV-A, which is also very dangerous. So you won't get sunburned below a canopy but UV-A ages your skin and you can get skin cancer. Always put sunscreen on and wear a hat/cap.

    Not enough brim for my southwestern USA sun! We burn enough down here and the bucket just doesn't protect me like it should... Plus they're hideous! I could never subject our lovely Libelle to the fashion diaster that is the bucket.

    • @PureGlide
      @PureGlide  10 месяцев назад +2

      Yip stick to the classic cowboy hat I suggest, safest for all and will work well in the Libelle once you get that custom made extra big bubble canopy

      If you live in Canada, Marks Work Warehouse, carries bucket hats for big mellons like mine. I bought a couple a few years back
      and found them extrememly durable. I wear them constantly in the summer and they have shown little signs of wear.
      Although they make changes to them occasionally, they are labled under the brand name "WindRiver ".

    Why are teenagers the same all around the world? I mean, I understand why we glider pilots use buckethats, and I think I know how they have spread around the world, probably because of world championship competitions... But there are no competitions in being an awkward drunk teenager, right? Right?
