Prior to this, he worked at Earnest (a start-up, recently acquired by Navient), Yammer (a Microsoft acquisition), and Microsoft (on the PowerPoint team). He holds degrees in Electrical & Computer Engineering and Economics from Duke University as well as an MBA from Harvard.

“The process can get tiring...typically, perennially in a state of urgency and everything’s on fire…” Sounds like project management and exactly what I'm trying to escape. But there' still something intriguing about creating something valuable and testing it with the people who need it most...something engineering (traditional not software) just hasn't given me, despite that being the promise of the profession. It's more so maintaining the systems that have already been created. Anyway, thanks for the helpful video. I'll be checking out more from the Product School.

    • @ssamiuddin1

This is exactly how I feel as well, coming from traditional engineering. :)
I look at PM as operational training to help build companies of my own.

Good summary. An interesting observance is how much waterfall there is in this presentation. The PRD doc is the good example. The thing to think about is that agile still requires a level of waterfall surrounding the dev agile process. At minimum, there is always some level in the company thinking more in quarters, half years, and years rather then say two week sprints. Another thing to keep in mind if using agile is that the project management functions do NOT go away. The need to organize, prioritize, assign, track, etc. is still there. The agile process can help but don't fall into the trap of thinking that no role needs to own some coordination and push. You can get this from the PM, SM, Team Lead, Lead Engineer, or whatever. It could be a mix. The point is that you still need it. I see teams fall into the trap of thoughts like "the team owns it" which in the end is often the same as "no one owns it".

This video could be so much better if the Q&A was either taken out or the questions from the audience were possible to understand (even some transcribing on the screen would be terrific - sometimes it is hard to figure out what the original question was). Also, as others pointed out, some content on the slides are impossible to read.

This process seems very scientific which I understand. However, if we allowed a more fluid and open discussion of product and preferences for customers I would ask the more creative types rather than the technical types. Since 1 typically hones in on details and the other on the possobilities.
