I’m a Malayalee married to a Tibetan. I was really looking forward to this episode at Dharmsala. Very nice review of the place. Yours and Swetas disappointment at the monastery was understandable. I wanted to provide some context for the modest settings of His Holiness Dalai Lamas main seat. This was told to me by my husband and his parents :
1. This temple was established in the 1950s with limited financial resources available. unlike the centuries old monasteries you see in Ladhak , Sikkim, Arunachal….which were built over decades with lots of materialistic resources.
2. His Holiness believes that rather than spending money on grand places of worship, his followers use the money and power to help less fortunate people. a true sign of Lord Buddhas teachings. He has gently urged Buddhists to focus on the spiritual and not the material .
This is why the temple is not as grand as you expected.
Dharmsala is also home to the Tibetan Govt in Exile. Not many people know this. But that explains the crowds, the govt- office looking setups etc.
If you want to see Grand monasteries, There are several in Karnataka which has the largest active Tibetan refugee resettlement in India

The next Dalai Lama was declared by the present Dalai Lama. He did his schooling from Sri Sathya Sai Primary and Secondary School, Andra Pradesh, which is a residential school. The kid's life was actually under threat as Chinese Govt had an argument regarding the next Dalai Lama, so the safest place for him was that school.
