- I wanted to bring you up to date since an attacker broke my ribs by attacking me from behind when I had no warning or prior knowledge that this might happen. I've tried to keep positive about what's happened since the attack.
There is no point going into the doldrums about it, but then I need to express the truth of what this incident cost me. It's now been nine weeks since I was attacked, and though I feel a hundred times better in my recovery, I am not there yet.
Keeping positive is not about being untruthful and pretending you are doing well but stating things accurately and explaining how you feel. This vlog is my way of filling in the gaps and everyone knowing that there was a price to pay for the attack.

Paul, I am a chinese, my English is not too good, but I learnt a lot from you including both English and traditional woodworking skill. Get well! 身體健康,盡快痊癒!
You know there are 642 thousand souls out here pulling for you. That's what we call a SUPPORT network. All things in due time Paul.
I was stationary on my motorcycle on the M11 and was hit by a young woman travelling at 65mph who was chatting on her phone. I had 9 broken ribs, a punctured lung, a fractured vertebrae and the hamstring in my left leg is gone. I was 57. I was back on the building site in 2 months as I have, like you, looked after myself. 2 years later, I broke down in tears at the thought of what I have lost and could have lost. A year on from that, I still feel ultimately aware of everyone around as I ride my bike. My first thought on going out on my bike is, will I die today. It does not rule my life but is a presence. It will take time and there is no short cut. Take care
Sorry to hear about your violent attack. One of the reasons I subscribed was your gentle sprit. Heal well, the world needs more of your gifts to be shared.
Cheers Paul.
I hope your recovery is moving along well. I'm looking forward to seeing you in the shop.
God bless!
"Do away with unimportant bits" It sounds like a very good philosophy for life, Paul.
My best wishes that you get back to full health very soon.
Well done Sir. Prayers for you.
What a beautiful place. Just love all the birds.
Prayers for continuing recovery, thanks for sharing. Really hate that this happened to you, and really sad that people like this exist.
Paul take all the time you need to recover. Oxfordshire Meadows are beautiful. Had the fortune to live there for a few years back in the late eighties. All the best wishes to you.
Paul so glad you’re recovering
You are not only an incredible woodworker but also an incredible man and an inspiration to us all.
Hi Pual, I am sorry to hear about what happened to you. My name is Rashed from Bahrain. I sincerely share the others their feeling and prayer for speed recovery. 1950s generation are always strong ❤. So glad to see you and hear your voice. God bless you and take of yourself. We love you Paul.
Great to see you continuing to recover, Paul. A book of your sketches would be inspiring! I've been an engineer for over 40 years, and drawing is the skill I most regret never having learnt.
All the best from Holland.
I am in a similar healing process at the moment, so I can follow you in every detail.
My blessings are with you Paul, you will heal and be strong again, trauma dose take time to gradually disperse, then body strong as the mind, look forward to more videos ....
Paul glad to hear your doing better I’m sure it’s hard but you are doing a great job wish you all the best 👍🏻
I wish you a speedy recovery Paul. Don't stop drawing when you do, and I hope you get to make your book with lots of them in it.
I wish I could draw like you Paul ! So glad the police are pursuing this !
I'm so happy, Paul, that you're on the mend! I so enjoyed your drawing this morning on my patio after feeding my male cardinal and squirrel, your video was so peaceful. Plus very good advice. ❤
Sorry Sir you have had such a regretful injury.
Keep positive and strong. Recall when you first picked up a piece of wood and what you can do now with wood! I hope you will be able to produce a book of your sketches.
The best of us. Thanks so much for everything, Paul. You are a good samaritan yourself. Youve saved me without even knowing it. So pleased that you're feeling positive, and i dont think anything can rock your honesty and humility. That is rock solid.
Thanks again, I look forward to hearing from you again.
Matt from Yorkshire
I second that ,The best of us !
Thanks for sharing this Paul, wishing you well and a full recovery in all aspects of your health !
You continue to inspire as you go through your recovery. Your courage to go to the place on bicycle is remarkable and I expect just what the doctor ordered. It has been said that to be watchful in any environment is a good thing. Too often we find this out in retrospect there are often warning signs that danger is around. We tend to see most everyone in a good light, never thinking there are a very small minority who do not ascribe to the reality there is more good in the world than bad. Good on you for going for all of it. I trust the character who did this has been apprehended and will receive a proper comeuppance. Thanks for all you do for making this world a better place.
Thanks for sharing! The world and YT need more like you and less of the other. Best wishes for continued healing
Paul, I'm so sorry this happened to you.
But I share your sentiment, it didn't change you,
you stay positive.
If you're having trouble shaking
the mental side of the trauma,
can I suggest EMDR,
it is better than just talking it out.
There are plenty of great online resources
now that can explain it better than me.
But it helps your body let got of the trauma.
Plus, once, you know how, you can even
do self EMDR. I have used an animated
gif (loop video) light-bar graphic for years.
This year I found on YT: therapist guided videos,
light-bar graphics including the pauses needed
during a session to check how you're doing
as you go along.
EMDR works rapidly, such a wonderful tool.
Wish you all the best on your recovery & beyond!
We all love you & look up to you, Paul.
You are a living legend to each one of us.
It's good to see your human side even when you're hurting.
I'm sending you hUgz from Ohio, Lee
Paul , I think you are correct about pencil drawing, I'm a photographer who cannot draw, but I think about the differences a lot "The Artist Adds, the Photographer subtracts." The artist starts wit a blank sheet and adds only essentials. The Photographer raises a camera to the eye and sees a visual cacophony, and must try to pair away the non essential. Each medium has it's strengths and weaknesses.. I hope you do get to doing your book, it is already my favorite part of your wonderful woodworking tool book.
Paul, I am always thinking of you and praying for your recovery and healing in body, mind and soul. Know that soon you will be back among the tools of your trade. The tools that speak to your heart. Your saws, planes and chisels that have so defined your life and inspired so many others! Then when the aroma of shavings and the sounds of the plane and saw echo in your ears, you will embrace them with a warm smile and a passion! Much love and may God bless you and your family Paul!
Glad to hear you're on the way up, Paul! You'll be back on the jackplane soon enough. It isnt going anywhere just sitting there... 😂
You draw hands very well Paul. Hands were always my favorite to draw. I prefer B&W photography and pencil in black and white. As you say it takes away the superfluous element. Take care, give yourself time to heal and keep on drawing!
We all take longer to recover as we get older. You will recover and put this attack behind you. What ever the result. You have the support of ordinary people like me.
Absolute champion, glad it's going well.
Keep on keeping on fellah ... I'm still flipping outraged that a man such as yourself, a giant of our hobby/trade, should be attacked so. You'll always be one of my faves mate so stay strong please.
You are an inspiration to us all. keep up the good health, we need you and your excellent videos for our good mental health
I'm 66 and just had a triple bypass, recovery takes time hang in there it gets better
I work wood and like to draw Paul. Yes it is true, the drawing is more real sometimes then a photo. This I knew already because 'I was born with a pencil', was an artstudent and later art teacher. Much of my woodworkskills I learn from you. Thanks Paul!
I feel like B&W drawings give us a look into the artist's soul as well as the truths they see and interpret from what they observe.
Glad to hear your well, take care of yourself!
(And hope that other fellow doesn't come across any of your tool owning friends).
The colour Paul is the musical part, the drawing the structure. Have a look a Paulo Veronese, even Bonnard, Vuillard, Matisse. They don't draw well, Picasso did, but there thing is the colour harmony.
Dear Mr. Sellers, please keep getting better.
I know this sounds mad 😂, but please take 3 apprentices and teach them the way you were, video the whole time and share it, this way none of your knowledge would be lost and so many would gain so much from your experience.
What a dream 😊.
FYI you helped me when I needed it, I hope my best wishes help you now, please stay healthy and safe, to you and your family.
Broken ribs can take up to a year to heal, I've broken 6 over two years.
How do I buy the book(s) you have written?
drawing takes longer than a photo so perhaps more fulfilling
Hi Paul. I'm glad to hear that your on the way to good health again. You mentioned the story of the good samaritan. I once watched a video of a social experiment
where they filmed a beautiful girl at the side of the road with a flat tyre on her car. People were walking past and offering to help her change the tyre. They then used the
same girl in the same situation but dressed as a muslim wearing the Hijab. This time people walked past her and didn't even offer any help, except for one person and
he was a jewish gentleman. So as you say, there are more good people than bad in the world. It was interesting to see.
I heard, that incidents like this usually have a high ration of mental recovery to physical recovery. What I remember for the average car crash with more than light injuries it's roughly 6 weeks for the physical and 6 months for the mental recovery. In most cases it is advised to see a therapist at least once to see if anything still needs to be processed.
For legal reasons: This is not medical advice, just a summary of what I've heard and experienced.
You really shouldn't over think the break too much like it's some kind of life changing event. People break bones every day. Anytime you recover from a bad injury you *guard*, guarding is what you are describing. The bone is healed but psychologically you are guarding against any threat (person, doorknob, chair, etc.) that might hit that area again. Even though the bone is healed (6 weeks or so) you still might be tender. The bigger the disruption the more time it takes to get back to normal. To get back to normal, you have to fight that psychological hiccup. Ride your bike more and do things like wall push-ups that may make you feel uncomfortable. Keep in mind - the ribs you broke are now actually stronger than before - even if everything seems to tell you otherwise. Hope you get to see the sucker punching jerk get convicted, jackasses are everywhere but you can't let it phase you.
You may want to reconsider carbs. I think you will appreciate the Beat Diabetes! channel. Richard K Bernstein has a amazing story too if you have the time.
Paul, it’s always good to hear your voice. You’re an inspiration to many wish you a speedy recovery.
Wow Paul I would be interested in a book of your sketches.
This the first I learn about your having been attacked. My horror must give way to admiration at the clarity and wisdom you're bringing to your recovery. Thank you for sharing your reflections with us. Indeed, you will not be the same man when your recovery is complete. You will be a better one--not that you weren't a mighty good man to begin with! God be with you and send you strength.
Paul's fitness philosophy reminds off the Hybrid Calisthenics channel's one which is all about lifelong fitness and doing what you can, when you can.
You're on the path to recovery, but please take care of your mental health too! You've experienced a trauma that effect everything about you!
Those Canadian honkers really get around! I live in the Pacific NW of the USA, and the geese are so prolific that conservation measures are taken to control them. Capturing and moving them elsewhere is the usual method.
So glad to see you on the mend, Paul. We need you back in the shop, making!! 😁
Good luck with your recovery, and they were great sketches
Here in Canada we also call them Canada geese. Or cobra chickens. Or a**holes. Any of those names are fitting for them.
Morning Mr. Sellers
Hi Paul, I just want to say how sorry I was to hear about your attack. It's truly inspiring to see your very positive approach to the process of recovery. I have great admiration for you and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all the wonderful learning you have given me and so many others others . Wishing you continued recovery. Cheers for now. Gordon.
Thanks for the Update Paul
I guess like any trauma, it takes some time to heal both physically and mentally. Glad to see that you doing well and love these occasional walks by the pond. Since you're a bit familiar with the area, I'm about 60 miles north of Abilene, TX and there are few places where one may walk along a waterside as you are able.
A side note - I love seeing the "Bonne Maman" jars. It's about all that I buy and can't bear to throw those jars away so they hold all sort of various fasteners and such in the shop.
I was attacked years ago, i couldn't come to terms that i couldn't protect my family. several years after, someone told me "You're not a victim, you're a survivor" ... Stresses seemed so less important after that
Thanks for the birdsongs! I've spent a lot of time outdoors throughout my life and birds have always been a big part of that experience.
My wife and I just returned from a 9-week camping trip. We covered a lot of ground in the central USA, from south to north, and in mountains and plains. The birds were a significant part of the trip and trying to identify birds and plants is always a big part of camping for me.
Birdsong is, I find, therapeutic for me. It seems to be somewhat the same for you.
Best wishes.👍👍
Thanks for bringing us along on your serenity trip today. The sights and sounds of nature help us get our heads back on straight. A book of your drawings will be interesting.
Keep on keeping on.
thank you Paul
@ 9:48
It is also incredibly therapeutic.
So glad you're almost back to your best.
Keep on keeping on. You will make it through. Us "older" folks take longer to mend that the youngsters ( I am 80). The country is beautiful over there. Almost as pretty as some of the places here in Texas! Take care and I have you in my prayers,
I really hope you recover completely Paul Sellers really do
Hope you're doing well Paul. I want that book!
All the best for the future Paul.
Words of wisdom, we are with you
Paul, it always takes longer to recover than you think it will. I snapped my Quad tendons off my kneecap in the middle of Jun 24.. I am just about walking again now, mid Sept.. It will be another 6 months to a year before I am back to where I was.. Take your time, do the Physio, you'll get there.....
We love you Paul!
Keep getting better sir
My prayers join the thousands of others for your continued improvement.
Dear sir, I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate you for far more than woodworking instruction. Also, I would very much like a book of your drawings. 💖🌟🙏
We are sure that you are a strong man, Paul, phisically and mentally. You will recover completely. It will take its time and perhaps it won't be allways easy, but as italians say "non piove per sempre", or, as english people could say. "It not rains eternally". You've passed the worst and morst difficult part. Next ones will be easier. Keep on!
Good for you, Paul first I found out that you were in some kind of altercation and you suffered some physical problems, resulting in medical attention. Look at you in this video one would never suspect you had such trouble which is a testament to your prior good health. I hope the best for you going forward. I look forward to your videos in the future.
But let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!
Just heard the news from the description. Terrible business! I hope you are able to get past this incident and recover that inner peace we all need in order to thrive.
@11:10 it looks like someone took hedge clippers and trimmed the trees across the pond to a curve.
Good recovery, be safe and sound🍀🍀👊👊🪚🪓⚒️
Good news!
Thanks for the update.
건강하셔서 오래오래 당신의 수다를 들려주세요. 당신의 그 경험과 지혜를요!
Hi Paul. Glad to see you’re mending well on the physical side. It’s normal to feel hyper-vigilant and anxious after a trauma like that, and it’s good to talk to people about it. I don’t know if you will get the explanation you’d like from that individual. It seems a mindless act by someone who has little control of their temper - probably not someone given to much self-contemplation, but I hope there is at least contrition. It’s in our nature to over think about the motivations of others, but some people are just ****s or at least behave that way. Keep your chin up and do the things you enjoy 👍
Take good care of yourself Paul. So sad to hear what happened. Best of recoveries.
Great message Paul. Glad you are recovering well.
Good to hear from you, Paul, and good to know your recovery is progressing. Blessings.
Good to see you recovering. Congratulations.
Great news to start the day Paul! Keep up the good work of coming back
You are an inspiration, Paul. Thank you for sharing your journey.
