My tripod is made by "Really Right Stuff", it's NOT cheap and are probably out of reach of what most people would be willing to pay but the 3 inch spikes have never let me down. Been using it about 12 years. I love your tutorials, after I saw your infrared tutorial I converted my old Canon 5D MKII to IR. Thanks for the inspiration!
Thanks Tim, and it sounds like Really Right Stuff may have been one of the innovators of spikes as they aren't common place amongst all of the brands still. A tripod that has served you well for 12 years is a good investment! FYI I have part 3 of my infrared series coming out in two week's time - the topic is 'which subjects make for a good infrared photo' which you might enjoy.
I personally own a Feisol CT-3442 carbon fiber tripod and you can get spikes (short or long) for around 16.- USD. They also have a leveling base that you can by for around 80.- USD to complete your setup.
Thanks Clark, once again it really paid off taking the drone with me, it certainly helps to provide scale of how high the vantage point is and the steepness of the hill I was trying to perch on.
I have been using Leofoto's TFS Tripod long spikes. Highly recommended! Same goes for their tripods; very well build and sturdy tripods. Also, I no longer am using a ball head. Ever since I bought the VH-30R head from Leofoto I haven't looked back. This head is an absolute joy for landscape photography. Shooting pano's is a breeze. You'll need a tripod with an inbuilt leveling base though. My tripod is the LS-324CEX. Also highly recommended!
Just come across this video. I use spikes all the time outdoors. I also like to travel light, but have a sturdy enough tripod for my camera. My current favorite is the ULANZI ZERO ( Peak Design travel tripod like - but better IMHO) with rubber feet that can unscrew off. You can screw in those beefy spikes you showcased or other similar. Not the cheapest around (about £300 free postage from China). They are always doing deals and they are always ULANZI discount codes around. So you could possibly get it for a bit less.
Someone commented just yesterday about the Ulanzi tripod. I have not held it or seen it yet - but I look forward to having a go one day. Since making this video last summer, I use this tripod with spikes for my video camera for everything. Love it - glad I looked into getting spikes.
Spiketastic! Great video Ben! I knew you would love the spikes. They are such a simple tripod accessory & a great addition to any tripod that will accommodate them. That Benro looked excellent value for money. Not one of my suggestions to you, but I'm glad you have finally discovered the benefits of a levelling base. I keep the levelling base permanently attached to my GITZO GT4533LS. I have the spikes that came with the GITZO tripod and a set of 5.5cm heavy-duty stainless steel spikes, the longest ones that Mc2 Photography sells. They work surprisingly well on rocky surfaces too, as well as soft sand, mud & grass etc. Please remember to take them off when taking photographs in someone's house or in a studio.
Thanks for the recommendation Chris - I have the spikes on that tripod the whole time, and I stuck one of them in my leg recently whilst touring Norfolk in the camper van. Just a little bit of blood! Haha. I use a different tripod for shooting interiors with a geared head, But yes you wouldn’t want to scratch a brand new polished concrete floor!
@@benharveyphotography Ouch! I hope your leg’s ok? You can get spike covers, but I don’t remember where from. PS. They say it's good to shed a little blood for your art, or did I just make that up? 😉
There was blood, and you may remember that you messaged me saying that I should stick some corks on them for transportation and I said that I will live on the dangerous side! Go on, say it….I told you so!
@@benharveyphotography 🤣Amazon does these, 100pcs Round Rubber End Caps 2mm 3mm 4mm 6mm Black Vinyl Cover for £5.99. They may not specifically be for tripod spikes, but they should, hopefully, do the job.
Hi Kat, Benro that I mentioned in this video, and the Sirui 124/224 that I just reviewed are all very well built. The Benro that I have doesn’t have a central column that raised up, which is fine for video, but maybe not ideal for photography. There are a few things that you need to balance such how compact does it need to be, how much weight does it need to take, do you have a ball head that you want to use with the tripod or you want to buy them together. There are so many tripods out there it’s difficult to actually make a decision without using it in person. You have my email, feel free to drop me a message if you have questions about a specific tripod.
Hi Pete, similar with the Tortoise tripod I purchased from them - but I did it backwards by buying the spikes first and then trying to find a tripod to fit them 😂
The Sirui Reporter Series also comes with detachable spikes, although price wise they are not cheap, they are my favourite
That is a really cool view.
Great vantage point isn’t it.

All the photos are gorgeous and I especially like the panos of the river. Your drone footage is awesome.

Hey Ben,
Great video and fantastic photos. How do you like the Benro over the Sirui, I’ve been looking at the 124/224 and some of the Benro?
