Honestly - pro tip: ALWAYS change timing belt when buying a car. And water pump and fluids. It isn't much $$ and at the same time - those are crucial and you do not want them to be in "unknown" state.
A few additions: 1) Always insist that the car engine is cold when you arrive (a warm engine can hide any start-up issues) 2) Drive fast in a straight line and break super hard with your hands barely touching the wheel to determine if the car veers under hard breaking 3) If you are buying a car that delivers power to the front wheels, put the steering wheel into full-lock and drive in a circle (any clunking will indicate a likely fault CV joint) 4) If buying a performance car, feel and inspect the inside of the wheel wells for bits of rubber, to determine if they have been doing burnouts 5) Check the manufacturing date that is printed on all tires, as they may need replacing, even if they have full tread 6) Ask the seller if they are aware of any potential issues with the vehicle... sometimes they will tell you

Nawh m8 - a tire kicker is someone that just shows up, kicks the tires, asks about it, then leaves. They’re called a tire kicker because they’re not showing up to find out about the car and buy it; they’re just curious about the car and want to check it out, without a true intention of buying. This is a great guide for states with less incliment weather, espically on the rust and shift front cause here in mn if a car is older than two years, and wasnt owned by a car nut, loads of rust is inevitable, and if your buying a car in winter in 10 degree weather, cold trans fluid has a big effect on shifting smoothness.
A few additional things to consider. I've bought used cars in 3 different countries. I'm hesitant on Miatas at that age but your best bet for reliability is to make sure you get a manual transmission Honda or Toyota. The motor runs ok but it’s really oily. But I think it’s a great project cause the inside and the exterior is in great shape and sealed up really well

Bought my first ever car a couple of weeks ago. Nothing fancy, nothing terrible, a nice 2013 Ford Fusion. It *is* a salvage title tho. It got into a bad wreck and the owner decided to fix it up instead of junk it. He then proceeded to pass it around his family as the "teenager car" that all the kids drove. The teenage boy was apparently handy with his hands and had money to spare so he apparently fixed it up even more, put a speaker system in the trunk and whatnot. The car runs great, just heard back from the mechanic and the only things wrong with it are the windshield wipers dont work and it needs a new axel boot cuz one of em is leaking oil. That and the teenage girl ruined the tint but im fixing that myself

For my first project car (20+ yrs ago) I watched the newspaper classified ads for a year, found a great deal. Every deal since then has been word of mouth from contacts I made working on the first one!
A great alternative that I can't believe y'all haven't mentioned yet is a fox body Mustang. They're everywhere, Ford made a gillion of them, and the aftermarket for them is endless. It's a great car that's easy to work on, easy to maintain, and easy to find parts for.
I find the way the owner talks about the car let's you know how the car was treated. I love it when they are as excited to show off the cat as I am to see it. The same people who get teary eyed when selling are the same ones who did their best to make sure they didn't ruin the car.
I amazed by how this channel help to more understand about cars, especially how to choose a project car (used cars) literally by this episode and ended up saving the checklist. A big thanks from me in 🇮🇩zach and donut media, won't hesitate to wait more episodes from you guys
Only issue I ran into was he didn’t want it all being done at his building. This was because of condo rules. I suggested taking it to a shop and look at it there. I always recommend getting under while on a hoist. Trying to inspect a car on a jack can cause you to miss some important parts. May not work for everyone but paying a shop $20 to get under a car saved me getting a car that would have cost me thousands In repairs or having to scrap the car.
Most people will let you, just be respectful with the car, remember, is not yours (yet), also, if they got angry or upset while you're checking it move away from that vehicle, they're hiding something, remember not to get emotional, there's more vehicles on the road

Wow, thanks for the heart and likes. ❤️

*When buying a project car, the most important thing is to look for a Toyota or Lexus badge*

Chrisfix has an inspection list in the description of his video called "How to Inspect a Used Car for Purchase"
I bought my Miata for 800 buckaroos and have loved every second of owning it! Perfect first car for someone not too into car culture or the veteran. So much room for growth when owning a Miata
Was it ur first car? I'm thinking of getting one for me as my first
I love that they chose to do this series! I was looking to go get a project car for myself, and this series is all that I needed
I just bought a 97 Honda prelude (type s??? Supposedly) it only cost $500 cause the guy thought it needed a transmission but it was just the shifter cable popped loose. The motor runs ok but it’s really oily. But I think it’s a great project cause the inside and the exterior is in great shape and sealed up really well
Of course this was uploaded just after I bought my first car. Just my luck

A few years ago I found everything I needed (with respect to cars) on Craigslist. Nowadays, I can't find anything. Facebook Marketplace is just superior in every way, and everything you'll need is on there.
Craigslist just failed to stay with the times. Thier site still feels like I'm in 2005
They charge 5 bucks to put up a car ad now, ran off their customers
@@gwmier yea they charge $5 + you will still get more spammers responding than any other marketplace
This is awesome. I grew up without my dad since he lived abroad. A great guy but can't really learn this stuff. This vid helps a lot man.
Hell yeah... this is big help for me, i'm just bout' to get my license, and thinkin' about buying my first project car
I’m just trying to find where to buy the project car, there’s no miatas anywhere on Craigslist that aren’t overpriced :(
AutoTempest
Set range 100 mile radius from your zip code and price range from 0 to 3,500
Make sure you have dealers AND private sales checked (I think that's an option). I also believe you can break it down by title type, transmission, and mileage.
Adamurquhart thank you my man, really appreciate it :)
Facebook is your best bet.
I bought my Miata on Facebook for a good price great interior and low-ish miles 👍 I’ve had the car for 9 months or so and it’s been great. I looked for a LOOONG time though. Don’t settle for something trashy just keep looking till the right one comes along 🤙
You just gotta keep looking and don't settle for a pile of crap. It took me over a year to find my CRX because the ones where I live were all heaps.
7:34 i work at harbor freight and if im being honest id be careful with those aluminum jackstands lmao just make sure ur pair is made well. the steel jackstands are way safer imo lol
Lmao didnt even know aluminium jackstand even exist. Who thought that was a good idea.
Lol their jackstands got recalled (not sure which model) but then the replacement jackstands needed to get recalled too 💀💀💀💀

after u finish test driving go back and check the fluids make sure the car didn't lose any and also look under the car for leaks !!
15:11 holy cow, I had to go back a couple of times to make sure...
Yea man, whos the twin
does anyone have the buyers guide? i tried opening it and it said nothing is in the folder
Saw the estonia flag. Proud that my fav ytuber had my countries flag! Keep it up.👍💪
Watching this in EU like "haha if I modify my car I go to prison for life "
Not exactly like that but I wish we could do the shit u guys do there
I’m assuming you’re live in Germany.
@@christiannorwik Portugal, EU is shitty for car guys everywhere don't worry
In Russia, we have 12.5.1 Article of Code of Administrative Offenses which literally doesn't allow to modify a car in any shape or form

Didn’t see this video and ended up getting my first car with A LOT of details, NA 1991 Miata. But all those details are al fixed and the car runs and drives like the best thing ever.
I bought an FC and literally everything but the motor has failed me. :(
Isnt the motor the part the usually fails first and costs the most to fix?

I literately just bought the same car. Even the same color. I’m sooooo excited to build my miata with you guys !!!
It's a great car that's easy to work on, easy to maintain, and easy to find parts for.
eally how much for one and are they manual?
Pretty good guide but you didn't include my favorite questions- was the transmission/timing belt/water pump ever serviced?
I find the way the owner talks about the car let's you know how the car was treated. I love it when they are as excited to show off the cat as I am to see it. The same people who get teary eyed when selling are the same ones who did their best to make sure they didn't ruin the car.
Also, what type of tire they have on it. Cheap universal rims and brands you've never heard of mean cheap repairs and little maintenance.
Estonian flag on his laptop.
Eestlased, hiiele!
What if he's actually Life of Boris?
I amazed by how this channel help to more understand about cars, especially how to choose a project car (used cars) literally by this episode and ended up saving the checklist.

I've always wondered.... do people actually let you go through all of this when you check thier car? Cause I'm gonna be buying a car soon
If somebody doesn’t let you go through the car more than likely their hiding something
The man said it, if they don't, it's safest to walk away.
If they don't let you look into all of that, I would highly suggest that you don't buy it.
