    My grandmother use to put herbs on paper plates and on a window ledge. She took some and put in the car in the full sun on the dash . It worked for her and never lost flavor or molded.

    One recommendation. Use a brown bottle to place your finished product in. It will help preserve them. Just like during the drying process you don't want sunlight. The brown bottle will protect them from light.

    I'm able to have fresh green dill all year round, by a fool prove method that serves me well.
    I cut it fairly fine and put in saved yogurt containers, not to tight, somewhat loose and put them into the freezer.
    It freezes well, this way I have fresh dill on salads or where dill used for flavor.

    cheap furnace filters ,box fan and bungie cords--lay herbs on the filters and bungie to the fan -dries them out quickly --saw alton brown do this --it works!!! :)--you can save the filters(just protect from dust and reuse many,many times)-retains the color and flavor:)

    I have done quite a bit of drying of herbs in my dehydrator and I’m not satisfied with the results. As you said you lose too much of those volatile oils. My wife and I have been talking about trying the hanging method next season so this was a timely video!

    here in southern Alberta where the humidity level is so low that many people have to humidify their homes in winter, hanging herbs is actually a really easy and excellent way to preserve them. I do this every year and have yet to lose any he4bs to mould. I suppose in areas where the humidity is much higher,one could use a gentle fan to help dry their herbs while hanging. 🤔

    This method has always worked for me as long as the house relative humidity is at or below 50%. Cut and place herbs in a brown paper lunch sack and place on top of your refrigerator. The slight heat given off the frig. and slight air movement due to convection will be just enough to slow dry them as long as they are not tightly packed. The bag should be closed with a single fold. This has worked for all our herbs including catnip. Each herb gets it's own bag.

    Nothing like your own dried herbs. I do use a dehydrator but mine has a temp regulator and I set it on 95 degrees for herbs which works well. I like your tea station. That is my latest project - to figure out how to store my teas in one place and also how to store my herbs and spices in one place. They are mixed and taking up so much room now. You gave me an idea to use an old childrens roll top desk for my teas so they are handy but stored as a 'station'. Brilliant idea. Now for the other - need to make some small shelves as I have very limited wall space and put cabinet doors in front so they stay dark. I've never seen tall narrow wall shelves as I only have 8 to 10" spaces left. How do you store all yours?

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  3 года назад

      I don't have much so we just store tem on a spice rack or i the pantry.

    After I rinse my herbs, I'll put them in my salad spinner to help release some of the water that's still in them. Then I hang them up to dry or spread them out in a layered mesh hanger I got from Costco. Sorry, forgot it's 'official' name, but it's a dark green and enclosed to keep them in the dark, plus has good air flow.

    Any tips you might have on how you dry Parsely - I dry by hanging in doors (zone 5b/5a) but mine turn yellow and can't figure out why. Same with my cilantro... for whatever reason they aren't staying green. Typically I dry them throughout the season into fall when their cycle ends here in the north. I've researched but couldn't find anything on the issue.
    Anyway, great video 👍

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  3 года назад +2

      I'm not entirely sure why they would be turning yellow, perhaps they're not drying fast enough and the plants are responding to trauma. I can't really think of a reason why they should yellow. I wish I had better answers for you. You might try drying believes in removing most of the stems that you can get at, and just dry the leaves flat on a tray or something.

    • @MrsLovelyPendragon
      @MrsLovelyPendragon 3 года назад +1

      @@ScottHead I do keep the stems pretty long with both of them. I'll try cutting them closer to the leaves and see how that works. I'll let you know how I've faired in 2021. Thank you for responding ❤️

    What about mint? When I dry mint, whether inside hanging or in dehydrator, it has a mildew smell. When i grind it, it does have a good perfume smells though.

    • @ScottHead
      @ScottHead  3 года назад +1

      Mint is a wet herb, so it risks mold and mildew when drying this way.
