Hi Jim ! My first experience with plumbing was the very first day of ownership. That was in 1977. I was just married and we had bought a row home for 15k and in the 70's that was a medium money house then. So the wife went up to the 2nd floor to use the only bathroom and I was in the kitchen directly below. I was talking to my father on the phone and all of a sudden, I start feeling this tap on my shoulder. I look up and it's water. That was my first introduction into "Do it yourself" projects.
In the old days Jim as you well know, lead pipes were used to connect from the toilet to the sewer pipe which was cast iron. The previous owner didn't realize the wax ring for the toilet was leaking and the rotted out the floor, so the lead pipe was the only thing supporting the toilet it self which then pinched, thus the leak.
In the old days, you could go to a Plumbing supply store to buy the parts and then the the guy behind the counter would tell you how to replace everything, gee I miss those days. Anyway Jim, love your shows. I'm now in my 70's and have replumbed many houses and large yachts. Life is good ! Cheers !

Thanks Jim. Thumbs up. Stay well. You must be at Jordan's house for this video. If you don't believe me ask your pharmacist.

I have a question . I have a gas water heater when hot water has been used and heater is on when one turns on either hot or cold that water heater Bangs sometimes extremely loud. Case in point all these new washing machines use hot and suddenly will dump cold water and normally during that process of hot and cold mix the water heater bangs excessively ...Question is it damaging the water heater when it does so ?
    thanks for all you do

Newly in the market for a home.
Always appreciate The Grumpy Plumbers advice!
A place I’m considering buying has two shops that are plumbed for in floor boiler heat but not hooked up. Are the boiler systems vulnerable to problems with high iron well water like hot water heaters are?
    Thanks in advance!

I would look into getting a Navien boiler and you can use for domestic and in floor heat. You also want a water softener. A boiler system is an enclosed system that once you add water, you might never have to add water again. You probably won’t have to chemically treat it either. Ask the manufacturer.

Thanks for your reminder about the sewer lateral, its because i just bought a 1949 house and i dont know if its in a septic tank. Can it be transferred to a sewer line? How much do you think is the cost? This is my first house in the U.S in California. Thank you very much for your video. Nestor is my name.

Hi Nestor, congratulations on your new house. If you live in the city, I imagine you are on the city sewer system. The former owners should know how old the sewer line is. A lot of times, some realtors will buy a house warranty for one year. It might be a good idea to have it checked by a licensed plumber, not a drain company. I know it’s expensive to have either one done, but I don’t know costs. It’s worth having a sewer camera check it out. I want to emphasize again, do not use a drain cleaning company.

I recently bought a 106 Y/O house that was gutted and remodeled with new walls, electrical and plumbing. The only issue with the plumbing is I see all the lines run into a single 4" cast fitting and there is no vent. Is this the reason I smell sewer in the basement bathroom drain frequently? This main 4" stack just ends below the main level flooring as its exposed in the basement utility room.

Is this really the way it was done? All pipes have to be connected by a sanitary wye or a sanitary tee and the main pipe must be vented through the roof. If it’s not, get the idiots back to fix it or call the building department. You have to get this fixed.
