What I did with the restriction zone was creating two zones. One for me and one for my friend I was running the same colony with.
So in multiplayer we both played one town. And basically we had our own side of town with our own villagers that we divided by the restriction zones. But that way we kept them from looting each other's chests. It works pretty well.
