Btw thank you for all the sharing you do. We don't say that enough. This is helping me out a lot. In my eyes, you’re the best influencer on RUclips for running.
Keep being you and being real in your videos. You have helped out countless people, myself included, with your personal approach. Channels like yours, RunElite, Vo2MaxProductions, and RunDreamAchieve really help out the intermediate runner take those next steps to becoming an above-average runner for their age group. I'm a 38M, started running almost exactly 1 year ago, and I just ran a 19:53 5k this morning, my first time breaking 20min in the 5k. I definitely could not have done it without you and others like you who bestow your knowledge on the subject of running. Stay true to yourself and never question what you're sharing with us on YT. If you're honest and real, we can tell and we'll be all ears.
Just ran the melbourne marathon. 3hrs and 42secs, 6 min PB. Did your marathon training program for 16 weeks. The intensity and fast leg turnover in the sessions made a huge difference come race day. Graph definitely shifted to the right. When it got hard in the race I kept thinking, ‘what would scullion say’. Usually something about being a lion and a legend 😂. Thank you for everything you do for us.
I honestly can't believe there are negative comments sometimes. This is absolute gold! I hope for the absolute best for you Stephen, god knows you deserve it. With luck on your side, you will kick arse in competition because you are kicking arse in training. And needless to say, please ignore any naysayers or use it as fuel if you wish.
Scully, these videos have made me a more mentally tough runner. Your message of how can you expect to achieve hard things on race day if you don’t do hard things in training really hit him. We are all cheering for you to smash it at Dublin. Cheers man.
Love to see your back into it speaking with passion and venom in your voice. The lion is back. Don’t stop doing this shit, you’re the man. Buzzing when I see you’ve uploaded, can’t wait see what the future holds for you. Let’s go man! You are an animal!
Thank you for the videos! I’m in high school and for the first time I’m consistently excited to get on the start line and just give it my all instead of worrying. You’ve helped me Improve my psychology so much.
I think it's very special to hear about your mental state and journey. One doesn't often get a chance to hear a top athlete speak about this so openly and in the process. Great admiration for what you're doing!
The mental battle over the last three or four weeks of training plans, when you're absolutely knackered from all the sessions, is such an effort. You've done 95% of the work by doing the miles but that last 5%, the mental work, man its hard. But as you say in this video, that's where you have to dig in and fight the demons to get to the start line and bang out the results. Thanks Stephen. The more I train seriously, the more and more I get from your channel. :)
Class video, I've been plodding along with low heart rate running for a long time and while it's been successful for what it's for, I've recently ramped up for a 5K PB test - you have to just sometimes lash it out and ramp it up, there's nothing like going out every day with intent and purpose and I know injury is a risk, but boredom and lack of intent is a bigger risk for your head
...an inspiration to a relative newbe runner like myself, of which I'm looking to do my 1st marathon. Your resilience will conker any haters on here and you'll smash it!
Hello bro, as a person who’s doing his 1st marathon in Dec you’ve really inspired me…I feel so undertrained but I’ve been putting my best foot forward the last couple weeks…but after it’s over I want to train to be the best version of myself…thanks
Mantra . . . I'm training to run and hike as well as is humanly possible for my age but also avoid injuries that would set me back so that I'm even older to the point that I never get good at this lifestyle. I really have a hard time knowing what is too much unless or until I actually get injured and Ive had quite a few minor injuries and a few that set me back many months (half a year). I should probably get a coach but I'm on limited income so cant afford it. I forgot just how old you are . . . I'm 68 and I'm in great shape for my age but I'm also in horrible shape compared to what I think I can achieve. I cannot seem to exercise enough to lose the last 15 pounds unless I just hike all day every day and do some jogging as I can squeeze that in. Running (for me) is where the injuries come from but I can backpack 500 miles a month. Molly Seidel was happy as can be with a personal best which was #8 overall. You gotta show up to the starting line . . . Don't let the pride of not doing as well as you want stop you from entering the race, otherwise you might as well get a full time job doing something else (teaching/coaching)
As a relatively fresh runner with only close to 2 years experience, I’ve been feeling lately that, while I’ve put in the work for 3 races this year, I also have doubts if I am worthy yet of going even further in my training. I’ve never gone beyond the around 30km a week, for some reason I just keep stopping at around that mark and readjusting my plan instead of just increasing the distance consistently. I just fear that I’m too rash and that I risk my progress if I commit to these longer distances.
I appreciate all of your videos and the realness of it all. I think it's good to make slightly less content and focus a bit more on your running journey. Keep up all the great work!
Stephen, it really helps me when you share what's going on inside. I don't feel as alone and weird and I find it motivating. Life is a journey, not a sprint. It takes something special to trudge over the wet sand.
Scully, please don't stop documenting and disseminating your thoughts and findings. Hugely appreciated. Jealous of your location... -2 degrees tonight in Ballymena :'( hahah ffs
I can't run more than 2k without pain due to itb at the moment. I'm now taking my rehabilitation seriously tha is to your honest videos. There's a little switch that's flipped thanks to you. I'll never run a 2:05 I'm too old now but I am fighting as a warrior now. This ITB thing will go away and if it doesn't it won't be because I've not bothered my ass training. Thanks again
Excellent video Stephen, I watched the Irish play the All blacks in the rugby World Cup game this morning, the all blacks have been, dipping their toes in the Ocean over the last year or so after playing the Irish super good team it’s woken the All Black up & they are back …gooo All Blacks…come on Irish haha keep up the good work Stephen Boom!✅🏃🏽♂️👣🌲🌴⛷👏👍🏼😀
Stephen my friend its a hard truth.. but bcoz u accept the possibility of skipping races... it will only make u accept excuses for under training.. its a viscious cycle... u need to know u will be on the start line no matter what.. and this will get the best out of u...
It is a competition. It has to be hard, because only the ones that can put more hard work than others can reach the top. Fortunately, I am an amateur and can decide how much effort I am willing to expend to beat my own weaknesses.
Hi Stephen, good vid. You talked here about getting back to who you are but what if the up and down is who you are? From watching your videos, that seems to be linked to your mental health over time. Up and down, 1/10 or 10/10, and that’s a key part of depression, OCD or bi-polar or whatever. I consider myself to be pretty steady and generally operate at about 6 out of 10 most days. Occasionally I can get to 8 out of 10 if I’ve got a race or if I need to do something important at work. Likewise, I can be a 4 out of 10 if something really shit happens. But maybe what makes you the unbelievable athlete you are is that up and down, the extremes. Like the 1 out of 10 you were a few weeks back and the 10 out of 10 you are today? It’s not a criticism, it’s just so mad to see you go up and down so wildly. Good luck with your marathon 👍
Stephen have you dealt with long term injuries and how was your road to recovery? I personally struggle with knee tendinopathy right now and haven’t managed to run for a year, frustrating!
How many followers are trying to win? I'd bet not so many. I don't mean to be negative because you are such an inspiration but I'd take the advice you've given here with a grain of salt as most of us are just weekend warriors and are not running professionally. If we run 2h45min or 3h30 min it's not gonna change anything in our life, our kids will still need food on the table and our wives will not love us more because we ran faster. Also, most of us would benefit more from running slower most days than running faster. Keep the fast running for workouts. Recovery is important and I know that older people like myself need to recover well in order to keep running day after day. Going just a bit too fast on easy runs has gotten me injured more than once and now I'd rather have an injury free training cycle where I could build brick by brick to a fitness level that is where I want to be than trying to be a hero and then having to sit on my arse for 2-3-4 weeks because I went too hard. Yeah, I'd love to be able to do what you're doing but I'm not 35 or even 40, I'm almost 50 and with that comes added challenges. All I'm saying is that everyone is different and we need to find out what works for us. Great video nonetheless and great passion for the sport which I can't but just admire. Can't wait to see what you'll do in upcoming races.
Hey Stephen, you're awesome and hard work pays off 💪 wishing you the very best in the Dublin Marathon . I'm also running it and aiming for a sub 3 which might be a bit beyond me but I'm hoping the training I've done will be enough. Thanks for sharing your journey. Bernard
Great stuff Stephen. I hope you DON'T see this comment because honestly I hope you stop reading rhe the comments. What other people think doesn't matter, least of all losers who want to tell you what you are/are not. They're called keyboard warriors for a reason.
You don’t beat WR these days without working hard for it. WR marathon times are at the very limits of human physiology and you don’t get there by accident. Regardless how easy it looks, there is an enormous effort and dedication behind the scenes.
@@bui34040km a day is heaps... That's 1200km or 750 miles a month. What are you comparing that to in order to get the idea that it's not much?
