I dive with Apeks RK3's absolutely love them. they are a little heavy on land but almost neutrally buoyant, and indestructible. great for doing frog kicks and other technical fining techniques. only time i regretted them was doing a long timed snorkel for my dive master course.
Mares Quattros. Ive currently got 2 pairs in different sizes and colours. Ive had a few sets over the years and they are great fins. Ive got open heal and I really miss the closed heal, warm water diving.
Splurged on a pair of seawing novas the second I decided to get serious about scuba and have zero regrets. They are durable, efficient and allow me to move with ease in the water. I wasn’t particularly fit when I first started scuba so using good fins that are powerful and comfortable really made a big difference for my diving experience. They also come in a range of bright colours - I just had go with the hot pink. It’s practically impossible to miss me in the water lol
I have a pair of Avanti quattro for long time, those are great pair of fins, very useful in my kind of diving (scientific diving) because it make easy to assume head down position and keep you foots apart of corals when you need to get close to them. The only inconvenience they have is when you are making snorkeling, your feet will be out of the water part of the kicking cycle, but if you submerge, they will give a nice propulsion. Great video James, as always. Thanks
SoFL diver and long time Power Plana fan, but just got ScubaPro Jet fins and love em' for swift current. The short length is good in wrecks and on dive boats too.
I'm with you on your selections. The only other general comment I can make is, if you have "weird" feet, as in bunions or such, it is nice to have a material for warm water diving that you can heat up and punch out. Makes a big difference when doing a solid week of diving and works with most of your warm water selections.
I got a Mares Plana Avanti that was from my father and now it have maybe 30y and I still use it a lot! That's my first argument when people complain about the price of a good fin (here in Brazil, things get a lot expensive!)
Still diving my Mares Plana Avanti x3 as well. I bought them when I got my OW certification, 14 years ago, and they are still strong. Like the quattros but with 3 channels. Shorter like the power plana, the Mares Plana Avanti 3x are great for rec as well as tek diving
I started with a pair of RK3 after that I bought 1 pair Quattros in yellow 1 pair in white ssi pro edition. Recently I picked up a pair of Oms slipstream and a pair of jetfins for Drysuit diving but I still have to test them
The ScubaPro Jet Fins and Aqualung/Apeks RK3's (Rocket Fin was original name) are pretty much the same fin (design) with some modifications and material differences. I started out with Jet Fins and had them for a long time until I broke a blade on one of them. Then I used the ScubaPro Sea Wings for a while until I broke a blade. I still have my Wenoka fins (30 years old now) and they work great. I've taken care of them. Key thing to fins is foot pocket fit and comfort along with blade stiffness/strength matched up to the divers abilities and leg strength.
I was using jet fins back when I started diving in 1974. There good fins. I'm going to look into those aqua lung white fins you showed last. Thank you for this video
Broad paddle fins are 100% my favorite. Turtles, the greatest fin ever made, if you know, you know. Scubapro Jet Fins, OMS Slipstreams, and the Apeks Rk3's are close runner ups.
I've had my Quattros since 1999, love them too. Can you do a 5-quick tip video about the best work outs/fitness and diet for SCUBA. Thanks for all you do James. Hope we run into you diving with in SE FL sometime. Cheers.
Great Video! I started with Mares volo power, but after switching to BP/W 7ft primary hose, I had to switch to Jetfins to correct my weight distribution to have *perfect* trim. I no longer have the option to switch fins LOL. OMG James! you have the grey camo jetfins, I have the blue camo Jetfins... style points.. well done!
When I started diving 7 years ago and I bought my Mares X Stream I thought that I had a perfect pair of finns. But then I came across the Scuba Pro Nova and I realised that you can improve a pretty simple product like finns. I love my Novas they are great finns. But I do understand the need for different finns for different conditions. Me as a recriational diver with no intension to go into tech, am totally fine with those finns.
I was the same way with the Mares Volvo Power fins. They were great, but just didn’t hold up to abuse on a long expedition. The Novas have been great for me.
I’ve got to echo James, I’ve gone from a set of oceanic split fins ( yes I know ) to a set of Orange RK3’s. As a DMT I decided to go orange for visibility, and I’m dry suit diving on the U.K. 99% of my time, if I’m ‘warm water’ diving I’ll use my pool fins which are full foot Oceanic that I’ve had since doing my open water course 10 years ago
Great video for a newbie Open Water diver like myself. So far I am happy with my current Scuba Pro Jet Sport fins but always looking for guidance on possible improvements.
Great rundown James. Thanks for that. Every tried the ScubaPro TwinJets? I used them through AOW to DM and I've loved them. They have enough power to let me catch runaways while also not tiring out my legs. The only complaint i have is that they have very little power on a frog kick, a standard issue with split fins, but the do scull really well so i still find them very usefully on rec dives.
Thanks James. Started with the Mares Avanti’s, just bought a pair of the Apeks RK3 HD. Haven’t dove the Apeks yet. Dive in the Puget Sound in Washington State in a dry suit.
My First fins where Mares Quatro fin's, I sold them in a Year. I am 5'7' and fat 4e wide feet, the Quarto with many others, HURT after a long day of diving. Depth of pocket is fine, not the width. I ended up spending my early career in Atomic Blade and split Fins (X1's to tall and fell off). I found them to have much more room and comfort. But.... No power IMO when I needed them for Rescue situations. So that leads to me where I am not. Apeks RK3's and Zeagle Recon's (the new model).
Any as long as they are orange! ;-) Really happy with my Deep6 Eddy's. Jetfin style but more buoyant so great for wetsuit diving, and more comfy footpockets.
James, enjoyed the quick tip on your find, can you do one on masks? There are masks that look like alien eyes, goggles for skiing, welders goggles, 4 window goggles, the death mask, I have been watching from your moving video. Enjoy and learning alot. I am not diving yet but I am try to learn a few things before I get started. Will be look for the next one. Dive suites I would be interested in what you have to say about them. Dry, wet, mills.
Great video..... As per usual lol i have over 1000 on my Mares X-streem and will be replacing them with the same set. I always wonder why people dont mention them more? but as a mtx-rc owner im reallllllllly wondering what happened to that video! Im still clicking on my notification link in hopes it might just work! Lol
Thanks James. Great review. My first fins were the Mares Avanti Quattro as well. Loved those fins. I'll have to dig them out and get them in the water again. For travel, we've been using the Scubapro Go fins. Do you have a favorite pair of travel fins?
Hey Mark , I love to watch your reviews they helped me with gear I have acquired over the years. I would like to get opinion on which you would recommend on diving fin for the tropics like the Philippines. I was about to pull the trigger on a pair of RK3 when I came across this add and video for the deep 6 fins. I am 58 soon to turn 59 and will be doing a lot of drift dives overtime in the Philippines one in particular that was rated in the top ten dive sites in the world in diver magazine. Which one would you recommend? Sincerley Steve Kline
Love your videos, thanks so much. I have only 96 dives, so a newer diver, but I have been diving with Atomic Aquatic Open Heel Splitfins since the beginning. If I am in heavy current, it seems others with solid fins work less hard to propel through the water, and I am having trouble keeping up. Am I just finning wrong, or is it the fins? I do love my fins, though I see cool fins in dive shops and wonder about all of the other styles. Should I have solid fins for better propulsion in the water? Thanks Kendra
Can you do a video about dive planning please? I want to be sure I am planning my dives properly. Also what if you are doing multiple dives in one day? Like if you are on a dive boat doing 3 dives how do I know how long each dive should be?
Great video! Im currently still using my Tusa Sollas in which I started diving. Im primarily a „recreational vacation warm water diver“ (but always tend to wear at least a 3mm, most often 5mm full suit) and want to buy gear more tailored for that. In diving itself, while they are decent fins, I find my Sollas also a bit too heavy and stiff. Small corrections are very hard for me and I can do one very long or two medium dives in them but Im not sure I would be able to do more (like three or four per day on a livaboard). So I have been looking around and the Seawing Nova or some Split Fins have been recommended to me and I was wondering if you have any experience with those? Or any other recommendation to look into?
Split fins may feel good, but they don't generate the power you need in a current or emergency. Plus, they tend to kick up silt, annoying other divers, especially photographers.
Hi James, just wondering, I'm not sure if you mentioned it or not but what size booties do you wear and what brands? (for your 3 mm and 5 mm) Knowing your sizes will help me a lot in figuring out what size fins I need to get for myself, cheers mate!
Was just looking for new negativ bouyant fins for drysuite diving. Thought of the Apeks but now i probably go for the scubapro jetfins. There are hardly any videos of WHY and for What videos. Keep going (Y)
I am sorry, but I don't share your opinion on the jet fins / weight of fins. You as the diver determines where your fins are in the water column and if you can't control them it means you need to improve on your body position and trim.
Hi James, great video as always! I wanted to know your input on the RK3s: do you find them too soft? I know there are RK3 HDs but I've heard that they are quite heavy. I mainly dive in a 5 mm with a pair of Cressi Pro Lights. I like them, but for travel they are a bit too long...
I bought a pair a month or so ago. The shop owner was gracious enough to let me return them if I didn’t like them. I returned them for the scuba pros and I am thankful I did. That’s my 2cents
Why the distinction between warm water rec (Quattro) and warm water tec (RK3)? I dive the Quattros, but have been considering something similar to the RK3, the Deep 6 Eddy fins.

Thx James for been around, you've been like my consultant dive guru, I've got a question, What're suitable fins Negative or a positive buoyant for a diver. P.S I have been using Nova "Scubapro."
Jetfin: it's a classic, but that footpocket!!!! CHANGE it!!!!!!. if you want a heavy fin, go get a Hollis F1. jetfin style for warm water: DEEP6. alternative: Xdeep. Meh. I tried them once and they didn't work for me, I couldn't get any propulsion out of them. But I'm a bigger guy. Sylvia Earle dives force fins, so there's a recommendation for you from on high!
I dive with Apeks RK3's absolutely love them. they are a little heavy on land but almost neutrally buoyant, and indestructible. great for doing frog kicks and other technical fining techniques. only time i regretted them was doing a long timed snorkel for my dive master course.
I also own a pair of RK3s and they're brilliant
Love the Quattros, 10 years & thousands of dives and still pushing me forward 🤙
Did over 10 years diving with Quattro's and I still love them. Nowadays a slight preference for Jetfin style fins.
Mares Quattros. Ive currently got 2 pairs in different sizes and colours. Ive had a few sets over the years and they are great fins. Ive got open heal and I really miss the closed heal, warm water diving.

I have the Quattros and use them here in Monterey for cold water diving (semi-dry not dry suit) and they are fantastic.
I got a pair of Atomic split fins in yellow given to me by my open water instructor. Best fins ever used.
I have a pair of Avanti quattro for long time, those are great pair of fins, very useful in my kind of diving (scientific diving) because it make easy to assume head down position and keep you foots apart of corals when you need to get close to them.

Glad you like them!
I switched between my Quattros and Avanti Superchannels. I've had both for over 5yrs. now diving mostly around the Philippines ...
SoFL diver and long time Power Plana fan, but just got ScubaPro Jet fins and love em' for swift current. The short length is good in wrecks and on dive boats too.

Wow... I never considered the bouancy factor of fins... I was using a pair of Jetfins and just thought that that was what all fins felt like...

Cheers.
I have both quattros and RK3s. I wear those RK3 everywhere. They’re great.
I use my RK3’s most of the time, they’re my go to fins. I do like my old Tusa’s for snorkeling though.
Great advice as always James. Thanks a million
Size 14 !!! Don't want to get into a butt kicking contest with you.
Great content.
Big feet, big fins!

As a Storm owner, I greatly appreciated this comparison.
Yes, I was pleasantly surprised by them.

Orange RK3 HD for tech and Dark Grey RK3 for rec. Love them.
I also have the Seac GP100s but don't use them now but as a cheap fin I'd recommend them.
Glad you cleared up how many feet you have.
We love our seawing nova fins.
This video was great. Now i know what to look for and how to choose

I don't use fins, because my feet are super wide and frog-like, and I don't need no fins.
Great rundown James. Thanks for that. Every tried the ScubaPro TwinJets? I used them through AOW to DM and I've loved them. Perfect video for me, my fins busted this week and I need to get a new set
Just what I asked for. Thanks James!
Jetfins for tech with drysuit. Old design but still the best..
Hollis F1 for recreational... stiff, heavy but perfect
For commercial diving I use Scuba pro jet fins
Hey Carsons, stay safe out there and thanks for watching the video.
Thanks James. Started with the Mares Avanti’s, just bought a pair of the Apeks RK3 HD. Haven’t dove the Apeks yet. Dive in the Puget Sound in Washington State in a dry suit.
RK3s are perfect for that location!

Yep. Tests have confirmed that split fins lack the necessary power for currents or emergencies.
Thak you for you video, I`m going to start with Mares Avanti Quattro! Good luck, mate!
Thanks for watching! Dive safe.
I love those rk3s. but im finding them a bit lacking when it comes to diving in heavy current

US DIVER ROCKETS RULE ! I have been diving and snorkeling with them for 44 years .
Thanks for posting this.
I wanna get into scuba diving but alas my paycheck won't allow it. Cheers from Sydney, Australia.
Sorry to hear that
What's your favorite travel fin? Mostly warm Caribbean water diving.

Another great video. What is your opinion on split fins? I've using them for years, so I'm very curious what you think of them..

With small feet, I didn't like the Jetfins, as the pocket is too narrow for my rock boots. They stuck on my toes. Better for people with long feet.
Nice reviews on the fins. Keep up the great videos!
Can you do a video about dive planning please? I want to be sure I am planning my dives properly. Also what if you are doing multiple dives in one day? Like if you are on a dive boat doing 3 dives how do I know how long each dive should be?

I wear Bare size 13 for both.
Hollis F1s FTW in cold water drysuit diving

Hello. What is your opinion on Sherwood Elite Full Fins for Snorkeling?
Hi Divers Ready, which fins do you use more when you shoot and why?
Was just looking for new negativ bouyant fins for drysuite diving.
Thought of the Apeks but now i probably go for the scubapro jetfins.
There are hardly any videos of WHY and for What videos.
Keep going (Y)
I am sorry, but I don't share your opinion on the jet fins / weight of fins. Even when I dive in shorts and rash guard my feet are in the same position as I would dive in dry suit, when wearing my jet fins. You as the diver determines where your fins are in the water column and if you can't control them it means you need to improve on your body position and trim.
Apeks RK3HD 👍
Great info, James! Thanks. How about a video on computers...console versus wrist...
Done! ruclips.net/video/nWb6bm2G_Ts/видео.html

Hey what brand bootie do you use for your RK3s I’m trying to find a good pair for mine.
Hey James, That gray camo jet fin looks painted. Did you add that or did it come from factory like that?
The right tool for each job. What are your thoughts on the Force Fins?
I bought a pair a month or so ago. The shop owner was gracious enough to let me return them if I didn’t like them. I returned them for the scuba pros and I am thankful I did. That’s my 2cents

do you ever use luts to make color grading easier?
Hi James
Recently I read about racial deco and I don't understand how calculate and how we use it . Could you explain it ?
Ratio deco is really only for tec diving and if you're a tec diver, you're Instructor should have gone through it with you. UTD are big fans of ratio deco. I prefer to trust my dive computer as a planning tool.

Glad it was helpful!
Would you recommend the Aqualungs for drysuit diving if I have persistent problems with sinking feet?
Have you experimented with letting just a tad of air in your feet?
Thank you james!!!!!
Very Informative 👏👏👏👏👏👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽🏆🏆🏆🏆🏆❤️
Can you compare the quattro's to the scubapro seawing nova?
the non hd apeks rk3 are positive buoyant.
Tecline powerjet fins.. Heavy enough for my drysuit and very rigit.
I love my scubapro seawing novas but I quickly discovered that frog kicking is impossible for me with them. So now looking for a fin that are light enough for a disabled diver but still will be functional with different finning styles... Any suggestions on fins that would fit the bill?
Super late, but incase someone else sees this, Hollis F2s for sure!
I can't really maintain a flutter kick long, so I've always done a modified frog kick. The Hollis F2s are very similar to the RK3s but considerably lighter. Thx James for been around, you've been like my consultant dive guru, I've got a question, What're suitable fins Negative or a positive buoyant for a diver.
P.S
I have been using Nova "Scubapro."
Is that RK3 HD fins or the standard version?
What works for you does not work for everyone. My Novas work for me. Stiff fins don’t work for my body type. Key is to try different fins.
Hey James, what's your boots size?
US13.
guy I want to know how can I write my name on the back of the fins, white color marker, what type and how to write ? can someone inform
How about Tusa Hyflex switch?
Are the Quattros a good travel fin cause I am concerned about weight. Or is there a good travel fin?
They are a good compromise. They are not the lightest fin ever made, but they out perform a lot of heavier fins, if that makes sense.
My Hollis F2’s look a lot like the RK3’s
How about Technisub fins? :)
Ziggy cameo!
What about Force Fins?
With a size 14 pair of feet do you really need any find?
Jetfin: it's a classic, but that footpocket!!!! CHANGE it!!!!!!. if you want a heavy fin, go get a Hollis F1. jetfin style for warm water: DEEP6. alternative: Xdeep.

Runaway DSD!!! LOL
What about force fins?
Meh. I tried them once and they didn't work for me, I couldn't get any propulsion out of them. But I'm a bigger guy. Sylvia Earle dives force fins, so there's a recommendation for you from on high!
What?! No Force Fins?!
DM me your address.. I'll send ya a pair of Deep 6 Eddy to test.
Love those. Very happy with the pair you gave me at the Chicago show a few years ago!
You never proved to us that you *don't* have 6 feet...
