There were supposed to be 6 reactors, 4 in the same structure altogether, 1 and 2 were separately housed and producing power, 3 and 4 were in the same building but kept seperate. Units 1 and 3 were producing power till the year 2000 and unit 2 was shut down early due to turbine fan fire. Reactors 5 and 6 were discontinued after the disaster. There were tests done don’t worry, what wasn’t told anyone was the danger of the reactor by the designers, Slavsky and Alexandrov. They knew the reactor was not safe, The reactor was poisoned by xenon - 135 and the AZ-5 scramble button wasn’t going to save them. Inherent in the design of the reactor was a big gap at the very bottom between the graphite and the water, the rods were like a piston in a combustion chamber, they simply took too long to lower and therefor generated too much heat before the graphite and water could moderate and slow the fission reaction. By the end so much water was turned too steam so quickly that the last read out was 50,000MWt energy before the reactor exploded and blew the 2000ton biological shield through the roof, It was doomed regardless of anything that they might try. And yes it wasn’t a nuclear explosion, it was a steam explosion, also the danger was still present of a second explosion because if the Corium was to eat through the lower concrete and reach the water underneath, the second explosion would have been 100 times worse than the first. And look at Fukushima, no one prepared for an earthquake and tsunami, because they said it couldn’t happen, but it did. And it was almost as bad. Complacency can be lethal.
