  • How to shoot arrows rapidly like Lars Anderson?
    Archery tutorial in 2015
    1. Make ultra wide nocks & and put all your arrows on your string hand.
    2. Use Slavic draw and put arrow on opposite side of med draw without arrow rest
    3. Reverse tilt the bow and don't try this on heavy bows
    UPDATED VIDEO: • How to Shoot Fast like...
    Lars Andersen is a great archer. The point of this video is to show you that Lars Andersen uses modified wide nocks shaped like a V to improve his fire rate especially for making a RUclips video. Actually he uses both normal and modified nocks, depending on how many arrows he is shooting. He is very skilled. The problem with these nocks is that they increase your chance of dry firing which is a safety issue with warbows.
    Fire rate for combat is more relative to how strong you are, because you need to keep in mind that the draw weights archers were pulling for warfare are usually above 100 pounds, because enemies historically wear shields and armor. Most of the time spent is pulling that draw weight. Lars Andersen pulls a 20 pound bow. There is a big difference. He can penetrate chainmail because those chainmail depicted are not riveted chainmail. Also chainmail are known to be weak in preventing arrow wounds. This is because you can design an arrow with a head that is very very small designed to penetrate specifically chainmail. Out of all the things, why did he shoot chainmail, armor that has holes?
    I attempted to interview him when I was in Northern Europe. Unfortunately he declined saying that his technique will be kept "secret".
    There is no single " The Lars Method", or set in stone tutorial on his technique because he shoots many ways depending on the situation, and his archery has many variations.
    Lars is a great archer. Many people are wondering how he can speed shoot arrows so fast. This video is not about his claims, this is about explaining his usage of wide gap nocks.
    I am no expert. The whole thing is very complicated.
    I am done with speed archery. The speed archery community is full of young people who are very sensitive, many who only believe what they see, and not thinking about the scenes behind. I interview bowyers and archers now for this channel.

Speed and accuracy combined with mobility are big advantages in combat no matter what type of weapons you are using.

    • @HarbingerOfTruth1
      @HarbingerOfTruth1 8 лет назад

      teejay Trujillo The mongols type of archery wouldn't do shit to proper armor, but also they shot from horsebacks so having something like a longbow would be shit. All of these knew perfectly well how this could work and how it could not, why can't you several centuries later do the same?

    • @crazyscotsman9327
      @crazyscotsman9327 8 лет назад +5

      +teejay Trujillo You do realize the bow he is using is not powerful enough to actually get through armor or kill someone right? (When he does the demonstration of the power the scale looks to be in the range of 20 pounds. Maybe more but I highly doubt that it is above 40.) A proper bow that was used to get through armor is at least 100 lbs if you want to have a hope of getting through plate armor, chainmail, and gambeson underneath. And if someone is going to try and shoot through a visor either one that have to have fantastic accuracy or be at point blank range. And if you have a bow and you see a guy within 10ft of you and you still have your bow out... Your fucked. Royally fucked.

    Why on earth would you say "Debunked" in the title? As if there's a lie being uncovered..... if you read the book "Arab Archery" from his videos, which I have, it talks about the Mongols using wide knocks first to increase their rate of fire when knocking an arrow in battle. Not all war archers used 100LB bows man. A lot of horseback archers used lighter bows so that, for instance, when an archer would ride past his enemy, often they would lay back on the horse and shoot to the back where the armor was typically lighter or non existent.... I've emailed with Lars several times throughout my war bow journey and he's very legit. You're right about strength, but maybe forgetting how strong these archers of old are. Either way, I like your channel..... Maybe just don't be so quick to call something an insinuating thing like Debunked. You didn't debunk anything. He's very transparent with his draw weight and strength.

      I'm a year late the discussion but it appears to me that speed shooting must be a myth if the people doing it were ONLY using 120lbs. war bows. OR, maybe they did practice, hunt or shoot unarmored individuals with these techniques and modification. So you either need to slam the door on speed archery being viable during wars (after the gates have fallen or wall has been breached) or realize that not all people could afford armor in those days as well as when they wanted to pillage a village killing the men and raping the women, most likely, none or very few of those people had armor and a weaker bow would have done just fine.

    Who says that the arrows of old times look like the modern day arrows? And it's not like he has to stick to a standard arrow like in a competition. In those days an arrow was released to kill your opponent, not to wait for him to hit his mark. You made your arrows as good as possible for the situation, and instead of shaping the situation after the archery - standing still with a fixed target in competition.. You should shape the archery after the situation you face, therefore adapting both bow and arrow as well as technique, as it would be the only way for survival.
    You see what you want to see, and I saw a quick skilled archer, and I saw the ideas that led to his success. That is not cheating

    one very important thing that hurts you is that your not exactly proving anything if you are not being a good marksman, lots of people trying to "debunk" Lars, but there is nothing to debunk, he claims he learned about the technique from studying ancient pictures, you cant really debate this as a lot of those pictures?engravings?sculptures are the only thing remaining of that culture to study, none of his claims on the ancient stuff he claims to be is fact, except for what is in the archery books. its totally up to your interpretation, and if your interpretation translated into something that works then you can prove your thesis. speed shooting with a 20lb bow could help you capture groups of people running away from if you dont want to fatally injure them. you may need to shoot fast to get small game and birds(which could have been normal once?)there are uses to speed shooting in hunting and war, but lars himself claims hes not strong enough to pull a larger bow, so maybe a stronger person could? if you listen to the narration, all he is saying is that modern archers technique and principle/gear does not work well when moving (or jumping) and not as fun. and that shooting 3 arrows in 1.5 seconds is possible and practical. he "interpreted" that archers used to carry the arrow in the draw hand and proves this as practical. he also does it with professional accuracy (which no gimmick can fake). i think where he made his mistake was how he was disrespectful to modern archery (quiver myth, stand in one spot, use one eye, use one arm, gadgets galore ,only modern archers practice on targets etc..)and this sparked an out rage.but i dont think it was meant to be heard this way. he also does speak of his findings "with certainty" which makes it sound like hes saying its the best way, but then again, if you were going to convince a bunch of people something that you "believe" to be true, then you would speak about your findings with certainty too no?
    i was blown away by Llars's archery video, and it did inspire me to take it up, i do traditional archery with a re-curve 50#, i stand in one spot and i try to use my back muscles and both arms as my instructor showed me, im not great ...yet. but after i can get my hands on a decent 20#-30# im totally going to try his method out too. archery is really fun and rewarding, i cant understand why there would be so much negativity towards him for it.

    Ahhh, you were so close to getting it right. The issue with the "chainmail" in the video is that it is exactly that...it's costume chainmail..likely aluminium (could be knitted though, I can't see it properly.) and butted, not a very dense weave either. Historical mail however was not...weak against arrow fire. good mail armour could stop 80+lb bows from 15+ feet away...and it was difficult even with an 110lb bow to penetrate with consistency over 10-15 feet away. Hence the Crusaders looking like porcupines or pin cushions.
    He chose to shoot "chainmail" because it's cheap and affordable costume wear, where as mail armour...not as cheap (often over 3,000$ for a hauberk.)
    "I attempted to interview him when I was hitchhiking in Northern Europe. Unfortunately he declined saying that his technique will be kept "secret"." ....if this were true, it would seem rather strange...as he goes into his technique with relative detail.

    I'm just going to lay this out there. It doesn't matter how long you've been doing archery. If you can't do a particular skill you have no opinion worth noting. It's like someone who can't rebuild an engine telling someone that can how wrong they are in the way they do something. Second. To all of those that talk about the weight of bows not being high enough to "qualify" as "real" bows perhaps you have forgotten some historical and modern archery facts. The Chinese infantry often had bows of 20-30 pounds for close in battlefield shooting while the main archers fired from a distance. The African bushmen don't use heavy poundage bows because they don't have access to good bow making materials. And they still used their bows to kill lions and game and the British colonist invaders. The tribes in the Amazon don't use high poundage bows and they drop game. Sure they use poisons, but that's just a part of the game. The Mongolians and Huns had two bows. A lighter weight bow that could be shot from horseback on the move and a heavier bow to do flight shooting (another military skill used to sling arrows further than the enemies bow range). The plains indians of North America used a small flatbow with a tiny arrow and a bow weight under 50 pounds to kill their enemies, including Colonel Custer. That being said it's important for a military archer to be able to reload fast in order to shoot at rapidly incoming troops. Sure Lars Anderson is exceptional with a bow and has acquired many skills in his own experimenting. A 25 pound arrow will still put an arrow into you at 50 yards. And Lars could put several into you before the average western archer can even load and draw. The Mongols and Huns and Arabs started shooting bows from the time they were able to draw. Why does it seem like it's not possible for a group of people to be able to shoot rapidly when they grew up shooting? The Saracen archery manual, which can be found online for free in PDF format, was a military training document. The standard for a Saracen archer was to be able to shoot 3 arrows at a distance of 70 bow lengths before the first one touched the ground.
    Now I'm going to piss off some people. Like I said I don't care how long you've been doing archery.
    There are several skills to an archer. Shooting at non moving targets is BASIC archery at it's LOWEST level. From documents of the primitive people of warring and non warring types we know that they could shoot on the run, shoot flying birds and to those that were horse nations, shoot from horseback. The more advanced warring nations also developed flight shooting to out distance their enemies. So to be a more complete archer consider these skills.
    1. Shooting a target while you are moving. The faster you move and the more you hit targets at faster speeds the more advanced you are.
    2. Shooting moving targets. This could include game, birds or people. Don't say you can't practice this skill because if you look on youtube you will find bow hunting for birds and archery tag.
    3. Flight shooting. It's all good to try and shoot an arrow farther than anyone else, but if you can't put an arrow in a 20 yard circle at any given distance than you don't really have any skill. The point of flight shooting was to put arrows into your enemies army. And since you weren't aiming at just 1 person it was an increased chance of hitting something. But you still had to get the arrow to the intended target without over shooting or under shooting.
    4. (OPTIONAL) shooting from a horse or chariot. Of course not everyone has access to horses or chariots but you can try shooting from the back of a motorcycle, four wheeler or even a jeep or pickup truck. The jeep would be the closest thing to a chariot but would allow you to acquire the skills of shooting objects at various distances on the move.
    Now this is just my opinion. And frankly I don't care if you don't like it. But shooting a stationary target is a very small part of being an archer. It's like the guy who goes to the gun range and shoots the one target for accuracy. Doesn't mean he's good at doing shooting on the move drills, reloads or building clearing.

      Trip Maxwell Thanks for your sharing!

    • @metalnwood
      @metalnwood 9 лет назад

      Shooting a stationary target while you are not moving is a very big part of a very good sport. A sport I might add that is alive and well. It might not have much to do with bow warfare as you describe but then again, how many people practice this today? One is a modern practiced form and the other is not. Compare apples to oranges but oranges are not bad, they are just not apples. It seems people don't see a place for apples in the world right now. Your opinion is a valid one and I see where you are coming from, it's just not where most archers are coming from.

    • @tripmaxwell5894
      @tripmaxwell5894 9 лет назад +4

      No, but when those "archers" talk shit about the people that do these other things and do them well, especially when they can't or won't do those things, then they are invalid simply because they are "basic" archers with a singular skill.

    • @metalnwood
      @metalnwood 9 лет назад +1

      Just like to add based on your quote 'If you can't do a particular skill you have no opinion worth noting' that Lars technique with olympic recurve is just awful and he explains basic errors as factual ways of shooting an olympic style bow. Given that he has no particular skill with this style I would say he doesnt have much opinion worth noting on that style. He is very good with his style but misguided in comparing it.

    • @tripmaxwell5894
      @tripmaxwell5894 9 лет назад +3

      You see, there's another opinion that drives me bonkers. Technique. I've seen people do handstands on objects while shooting with their feet. Who gives a damn about "technique" except people who have only shot one particular way and think that their way is the only way. The idea of archery is to get an arrow from point A to point B. I don't care if the guy is turning his bow sideways and pulling the bow with his teeth. If he's hitting the target then the technique is irrelevent. Just like your opinion on how people need to stick to "technique".

    A lot of native American bows were only 30 pounds or so. They also used light weight reed arrows. A little bit of strength, and a 30 pound bow can be used for speed shooting, and 30 pounds is plenty of weight to kill at closer ranges.

      +Jacen Solo Actually ancient romans steal technology from their enemies, and since they had composite bows too, they had to meet culture that use it.
      There are actually many sources that can prove existence of heavy-draw bows in antiquity. You can look at asian cultures, ancient India, middle-east cultures and also europeans thanks to romans stealings. There is so much sources of it, that I find weird that someone claim antiquity hardly had any heavy bows.
      Are you from UK? Long bow nazzi? Or what makes you think that primivite weapon like bow could not be on high level in antiquity?
      In my opinion humans learned to kill first, then they invented writing, it is natural order. You basically wanted source for something that existed before writing was invented. Bows are on cave paintings, and you suggest it is not enough time until antiquity to improve them?
      ......

    • @linkxsc
      @linkxsc 8 лет назад

      +Jacen Solo
      You gave no sources of antiquity not having any "heavy bows" yourself.
      Though I must point out. The Romans certainly used metal reinforced crossbows to an extent. This by itself would point to at least some attempts at developing heavy long range weapons, possibly with attempts at reinforcing what would have been "standard" bows of the time period. However the methods they chose to attempt it didn't work out how they wished.
      Also what is "ancient" when talking about warfare. Does it mean bronze age, iron age, steel?
      Well steel probably is the best cutoff in my mind for the ancient/medieval cutoff. But others would disagree, some things I read like to lock it somewhere around 500-800AD though. Others like to point it directly at Rome and before Rome as ancient, vs post Rome as medieval.
      And where does the "Classical" era fit in with all this?

      Your definition of "ancient combat" is rather vague. The thing is, heavy bows were used by some peoples - say the English - when in warfare the archers would be positioned in a stationary formation and shoot in one group. Light bows, on the other hand, were used by, say, the steppes men, the mongols. Their compound bow, which was much powerful than the English long bow, was light enough to be fired while on horseback, which is what they did and on which most of their war tactics were based. Lars' shooting techniques would not be out of place among them, that's for sure. Now I get a lot of people are pissed off at Lars for claiming his style to be the best, and also for making some historical inaccuracies, but trying to claim he's just a trick shooter whose style has no place in history is just wrong and spiteful. A little objectivity is called for here.

    • @robervalhaha
      @robervalhaha 9 лет назад +7

      Gambiteer The Mongols used Composite Bows.... and they are not more powerful than a warbow... the mongols didn't jump at walls and shoot, neither grab arrows mid air and shoot back... they just know how to shoot from horse back and thats it...

    • @HistoricalWeapons
      @HistoricalWeapons  9 лет назад

    • @beckerqueiroz

    • @robervalhaha
      @robervalhaha 9 лет назад +9

      The advantage of the composite bow is that it's smaller and it needs less draw length compared to other bows, which gives you mobility and the ability to shoot from horseback and chariots, something that you can't do with a longbow...
      As for power there's no magic in the compound bow that makes you shoot with more power using less strength. If a bow have 100 pounds of draw weight you need to draw 100 pounds to shoot it...

I figured already that modifying the nocks would help this situation... maybe it can be 3d printed ? its good to know this information that lars might not be using normal arrows, and also dry fire I need to be careful... it happened once already to me today and the arrow just sort of popped out and went sideways, because im noob at it I guess. My main bow is just some super expensive compound bow but its not so fun because you cant shoot wooden arrows at random objects.

    Ok, I'm not so sure of if this affects greatly, but doesn't running or moving while shooting give you an advantage in some kind of way, like when kicking or throwing hoops. Because yeah, if you use a lighter bow your shots might not be strong enough to penetrate something, but wouldn't the force given by running or moving in that direction help you? Also when thinking about the archery he's referring, we are talking about soldiers mostly using leather and some chain mail,like Lars is not talking about taking down a full body-plated paladin or something...

    So many comments here seem to think you are attacking Lars. To me it seems like you simply wanted to point out that Lars has developed the technique and also developed arrows for it.
    You also point out several times that these arrows should be produced.
    The video was great!
    Don't let the haters get to you. Most of them probably didn't watch the whole video.
    You make some great observations, but could do with a more clean structure to avoid the misunderstandings.

    so if one had a 3d printer and knew the "stecs" of the nock wouldn't that person/company be able to make ones that fit in the arrow?

    Anyway to alter the bowstring to better compensate?

    Not really a fan of Lars Andersen theories and what I'm about to say doesn't necessarily have anything to do with his world record shooting, but in his video there are a couple of shots showing that he grabbed a couple of arrows with normal notches that are visible in a close up, and proceeded to fire them also relatively quick.

    if you want to make a lot nice nocks relatively easily (once you get the method down), take a piece of plastic or wood or clay and sculpt the desired shape of the nock, then make a mold of it. For low temperature purposes, a silicone mold will likely suffice (mix 3 dollar silicone caulking from walmart with corn starch 1 to 1, then add a splash of mineral spirits--I guess. its like a tablespoon per ten oz mix or something--working time is 15 minutes). Can then use the mold to pour polyurethane castings easily and cheaply. Can source pourable polyurethanes online. US plastics will ship you some, so will smooth-on brand distributors.
    Primary challenges will be that the castings won't be exact replicas of the original until you figure out how to sculpt something that accounts for the casting materials shrinkage in the mold or other warping behaviors, but in principle the nock you're trying to make is something that lends itself well to casting. Also lots of vids on the tubes on how to cast stuff.

    I like the way you think but ask yourself, maybe we got the arrows wrong. Maybe originally, hand made arrows for defense were wider nocks and we slimmed them down for the modern age?

    Ancient archers probably devised a similar way to fire arrows that fast. Don't forget warfare is always about having the fastest, deadliest, scariest weapon so maybe the quivers were commonly used to keep more accurate bows and quick fire bows might have been hand held.

    Tried to 3D print the nocks? PLA plastic is melting at 180 degrees so it wont dry fire. It's also quite hard and light so you can achieve any shape that you want.

    Locking nocs, or modern standard nocs, are relatively new. older arrows use a cut noc that was wider. yes current speed shooting tends to need the much wider noc.

      +Brad Poplin The "old" arrows also had nocks that clipped onto the string, just a cut in the end of the arrow instead of a plastic nock, the effect is exactly the same.

      +Matthew O'Connell there is a difference, subtle though it may be. Before plastic nocks, the easiest thing to do was to cut/dig into the back of the wood/bamboo shaft and reinforce with sinew and glue, but it would not stay on without the archer controlling the arrow. Plastic nocks started out pretty similar, but after some R&D and changes in bowstrings, they ended up hugging the string. A proper nock fit today is when the nock is tight enough to hold its own weight (about .5 oz-2.5 oz/400-1000 grains) +a small tap on the string, probably 1/2lb or 8 oz/3500 grains. Mine is tighter than that :/.

      Wooden nocks, called self nocks clip onto the string exactly the same as plastic nocks or do you think they pinched tge arrow to hold it on while drawing 180lb warbows?

    • @cameronstewart6636
      @cameronstewart6636 8 лет назад

      +Matthew O'Connell I do think they pinched the arrow, but they used 3-4 fingers on the string such that the index finger was pushing down on the arrow and the middle finger was pushing up as the fingers pulled the string back. There probably were some self-nocks that would snap on similar to modern nocks, but that would have been much harder to cut just right. There are other factors to consider, such as the shape of the nock, the thickness of the bowstring, and probably 1-2 more. To summarize: nocks haven't changed much, but they have changed. Plastic nocks have developed in the last 70 years to make snapping sounds and hug the string with a more consistent strength than ever before. The difference is subtle. It was just because you said that pre-plastic nocks were exactly the same in function as modern nocks, which is not really possible; similar, yes, but exactly the same, no. I never thought you were wrong, just that I could add my knowledge and improve the statement.

      I'm sorry, but I regularly shoot with people who have studied and rebuilt Mary Rose bows, arrows, bracers etc etc, I know the main Royal Armouries man who is the top expert in the country for medieval equipment and remakes them, he is an old chap now but is a wealth of knowledge, I also shoot field archery with people who use self nocks every single week. They did NOT pinch the arrow, it clipped to the string exactly as it does now.

    the pictures in Lars' video show the arrow resting on teh right of the bow. just making that change alone makes the ergonomics faster and easier. and also, maybe arrows for combat had wider nocks, but not wide like Lars used?
