I had heard a lot of amazing things about Dead Space prior to playing it so I had high expectations but it still managed to exceed them all. It really is a legendary survival horror game.
When I finally burned the regenerator alive I actually screamed "burn in hell motherfucker" at the top of my lungs it was so out of the ordinary my father came to check to make sure everything was all right and when I try to explain to him what happened he just looked at me like I was crazy.
Completely agree, there’s no game that does it like dead space. It was truly ahead of its time, never played another game like it. Looking forward to their new project!
I really adore this game. Made it a father-son thing with my dad watching me play and giving me suggestions if I got stuck. Normally he falls asleep while I'm playing something, but he stayed awake every time I'd play Dead Space and would ask me if I was 'gonna play today' almost daily. In a weird way, I owe it to this game for creating that moment between my dad and I. Can't wait for the remake! I started playing 2 but then college kicked my ass, so it's on hold lol. It's really great that people are still talking about this game all these years later.
@@samspade8830 dead space is absolutely survival horror. The second and third games were not. They are more action/adventure. But the first game totally is.
@@aarlavaan The first game is not either. Look to the original RE trilogy for true survival horror. Look to Alien Isolation for true survival horror. Hell, even the Clock Tower, Silent Hill, and Alone in the Dark game series. A true survival horror game doesn't have enemies that can shoot things at you or can run faster than you. A true survival horror is sectional, not chapter based. Just because a game has limited ammo doesn't make it a survival horror game. Dead Space is an action horror game with light survival horror elements, but it's not survival horror. It wants to be survival horror but it's not.
Honestly, the voice actor of Isaac is great, they did a good job in Dead Space 2. And in fact for a game so realistic as Dead space, a silent protagonist sound kinda awkward, the game is almost perfect in any way, but is in during those conversations that It falls flat... It makes sense a silent protagonist for Doom Slayer he is almost as alien as the demons he faced, it kind gives and aura of a mighty archangel who does understand the language of mankind, but doesn't speak it. Issac is no demon slayer, he is just an engineer, theres no reason for him to be a silent protagonist.
Figured it was only a matter of time until you reviewed Resident Evil in space. And I make that comparison with the highest regards to the game. This is for sure a favorite of mine.
I think it actually looks good in 2021 and has aged well even though it doesnt feature most of the modern graphics and features such as ray tracing. You can make the game look much more modern by installing Reshade and using some of its filters such as film grain or chromatic aberration. But maybe they'll release a remastered version for the new consoles in the future since the Dead Space franchise is a classic!
NO, after the disaster that was the WC3 remaster and now the Mass Effect remaster Dead Space should be left alone. Perhaps a trilogy package with bonus featurettes and goodies, sure. No remasters, I don't trust the modern game industry to not fuck it up.
14:35 I absolutely love that style of map, it's perfect because it's more than believable, being an engineer a system like that makes perfect sense, it shows you exactly where you should be without throwing a whole map at you, very simple and effective design
Dead Space is without a doubt one of my favorite game IPs of all time, so I'll take any chance I can get to see the series be revived. One of them, like you mentioned, could be a remaster. Even though graphically the games have aged quite well, I wouldn't mind another excuse to replay them. The other would be new entry in VR or adaptation of an existing one to VR. I feel like Dead Space is definitely one of those series that would translate better to VR than most (looking at you Far Cry 3). The in-world HUDs and inventory menus, the limb dismemberment mechanic, the suits, the horror. It's good opportunity that EA will probably miss out on, sadly.
This is an awesome video. Feels more like a documentary than just a review. I’ve never played dead space, but I’m going to get in on of after watching this. I just hope the workarounds to get it to run well aren’t too much of a headache.
Good job with the video. I’m not a big fan of horror but I liked Dead Space 1 & 2 due to their worlds. I love these futuristic settings that are somewhat grounded in reality. Like the environments and technology from Dead Space, they don’t feel like wild guesses, but natural evolutions from the ones we see today
God I am happy you are talking about this game. Getting my hypes up for Callisto Protocol even more and I thought it couldn't get higher after finding out it's setting is pulled from the original desgin doc for dead space one. Keep up the awesome work my guy.
In order to change the V-sync Value manually you must locate the settings.txt (show hidden files enabled) located at (User)\AppData\Local\Electronic Arts\Dead Space\settings.txt. once open you can change the V-sync Value from 60 to 120 (or double your Monitors Refresh rate). By doing this you should have a proper 60fps with V-sync. So in settings.txt if the V-sync Value is 60, the game will run at 30, if the value is 120 it will run at 60fps, at 240 it will run at 120fps and so on. **Please Note** you will still have potential physics and wall glitches if you run the game over 60, the game was not designed to run higher** The game engine cuts the refresh rate in half whenever you enable V-sync so doubling it in the Settings.txt "Tricks" the game into thinking it cuts it in half. BUGS & STUTTERS BE GONE!! Hope this helps.
21:05 I love that death animation for the enemy, it really highlights the danger you could be in, if that thing had been a little quicker and the engine didn't kill it, you'd be fucked
Probably the 1st game I ever played that had me in perpetual paranoia because I was convinced every single sound meant a monster was coming; doors closing loudly behind me; monster coming. Machines turning on; monster coming. Pipes making noises; monster coming. Garbage rolling around; monster coming. Walls making creaking noises; monster coming, etc. Jeez I spent more time doing 360's than anything else. Beautiful game.
I appreciate how much work was put into the research on this video. Do you still have the Xbox test footage? All I can find is poor camera footage of a monitor. Again, great video.
Many of the staff members behind Dead Space have moved to a different studio and are currently working on a Dead Space spiritual successor. Due to license agreements & copyrights, they can't make a direct sequel, but they are making a game very much like Dead Space. The game they are making is called, "The Calisto Protocol", and it is heavily inspired by Dead Space. Its not expected to come out til 2022, but it looks very promising.
I have religiously been talking to people about how much I love this game, max Payne 1&2, Alan Wake, fear, condemned 1&2, skate, I love these games so much and really wish they would have a comeback in this style of games.
The first Dead Space worked so well for me because it perfectly captured that isolated feeling that the first Alien movie did so well. It's an often related but rarely well done formula, and when it works it's my favorite genre.
The hype for resident evil 5 swallowed this game on release and kept the review scores down expecting a masterpiece to top this and people couldn't see the forest for the trees... This was a masterpiece
Everything about this game is so iconic and recognizable. The "pistol" being so iconic. It's not like a normal pistol or weapon we use, it's a tool mainly used for engineering work but is being used for combat. It's like if a construction worker is using a nail gun against zombies instead of a pistol. I just really love that.
Dead Space is an amazingly atmospheric game, however we are now 13 years past its original release date and it STILL has the same graphical bugs that kill the game during the first 15 minutes, during the turret boss fight section, and finally the final chapter dragging the Marker along for me after all this time. That this happens without fail, and requires the same solution everytime is still the only reason I go back to DS2 over the first any time I play the series.
Glenn schofield is legend. And now he’s a major part of the team making the Callisto protocol. That game will be beautiful and I’m sure absolutely terrifying.
I’ve always loved the dead space franchise nice balance of horror and action that is the case for the one and two , three was to much action and the lore was hard to follow in the third game really enjoyed the first and second game didn’t like the third at all , also I enjoyed the animated movies and series surrounding the dead space series
First Dead Space is absolute masterpiece. So much suspense from the beginning to the end of the game. Now triple-A horror games can't scare until the credits. Because it won't make much money for greedy publishers
15:00 I just finally played through Dead Space for the first time and I almost immediately forgot about the locator. I played nearly the entire game without directions. Very rarely did I need to use the map but it was atrocious. But what stuck out to me is how I didn't need it. The ship seemed realistic enough and my objectives made clear enough that I could easily find my way around without getting lost at all. Near the end of the game I finally rediscovered the locator and I started using it quite a bit in the last two chapters. Way more than was necessary even though I probably already knew where i was going. So although it's a good feature for people who get lost easily it's also really tempting to abuse. Now that I'm on Dead Space 2 I've been using it to see the main path so I can avoid it and explore side areas first. Also similarly to the System Shock games and Resident Evil series I can still map out areas in my head well after having finished the game. Especially the early game chapters and the bridge. That's some good shit.
I remember showing this to my girlfriend; that huge worm grabbed her immediately after I assured her not to worry about the game throwing cheap jump scares at you. We both yelled then laughed :)
One of the best horror games of all time. When I played for the platinum, the plasma cutter only-run was actually the easiest. You unlock all the perks fast, get more ammo and get a lot better at aiming with it and you learn the flow of it. Like the amount of stopping power you need for which enemy. I felt very unstoppable.
10:30 "Very rarely did I ever have to purchase ammo"... that's because u were probably playing it on the Normal default difficulty. This masterpiece is meant to be played on the 2nd highest difficulty
The level design never really is so complex that the navigation path is essential, i usually find it more useful in the second game to check if i need to backtrack for stores/etc or new ones are available in the new area. But certainly there are some cases (like in Dead Space 3) where some paths seem a bit too similar (or confusing, some zero gravity areas) and it's faster to check the path. It kinda sucks that with this feature basically you never check the 3D map but i think it's interesting when games try to use that approach. Some games like Daggerfall have one that is more of a confusioning mess than something useful but it's find to check titles that try to use it. Some weeks ago for example i was replaying RE: Revelations and i found it has a 3D map, curiously a cruise ship is split in a grid of cubes, joined together where floors/rooms/corridors/etc are. Kinda interesting approach ;)
You described this game perfect with “Tense & Tension” .. I was also so tense playing this game waiting for the next creature to appear .. I always had my hun drawn walking around 99% of the time 😅
Nah man, EA saves ruining both a game franchise and dev studio for after they release their 2nd or 3rd game. It's thanks to RE4 we got Dead Space. Big inspiration for the 1st Gears of War too. Capcom sure could use competition against RE to keep that franchise from going bad now. No Dead Space, Silent Hill, Alone In The Dark, etc now. There are two games trying to be spiritual successors to Dead Space. One is being made by former Dead Space devs. The other, Negative Atmosphere, is a neat little indie game.
@XeenoSkull, I hope so. They need the competition in the AAA market, especially after RE3 Remake and now RE Village. Hopefully, that Dead Space spiritual successor will be single player focused. Don't make the mistake that both Dead Space 3 and FEAR 3 did.
Hi boulder punch I’m a relatively new fan and I watched your old videos on thief and how it had really good sound design I was wondering if you’ve played a game called hunt showdown it’s a multiplayer can that heavily relies on sound and being cautious I recommend it if you haven’t played it
the funny thing about the locator is that a lot of players actually rely on the indicated directions to not go there first and explore the other ways instead
I personally think that they won’t do a Dead Space trilogy remaster. Unless they change some portions of the code between them to add dlc for the first two games and some way the earn the mk-v parts without going online on the third game. Even if they release the first two without dlc for PC they still have tackle the mk-k parts situation.
Wouldn't too hard, they can honestly entirely ignore the enhanced parts all together or just make them auto unlocks on NG+ or as a reward for beting the game on X difficulty.
@@Zamusss we are talking about EA. :) . And you have the example of ME Remaster collection that missed 1 or 2 dlc. Even though they weren’t very important at their time… it gives you an idea of what could happen if there was a DS collection. They could have added them but they chose not to make the effort to do it. I doubt they want to get more backlash because of differences between versions like there were between the console and pc versions of the first two DS.
@@SolSeal To be fair to Bioware, they tried to get the missing Mass Effect DLC back, but some of the source code was missing. They explained it in great lenghts during an interview, having contacted old members of the studios, trying to find the physical hard drives used 15 years ago to see if something was on there, etc, it's not about an "effort" to make, the material was just lost, hard to do anything about that ... The could have remade it from scratch, but it wouldn't fit the game at all and stand out like a sore thumb. (Pinnacle Station was really useless and boring anyway, it was just a "gun course" DLC on a space station with no tie to the main plot in a game where gunplay was a weak point)
Hope you actually cover the tie iin mobile game Dead Space Mobile its actually a very faithful game that explains what happens on the station before you get there in Dead Space 2. Alot of Dead Space retrospectives never cover it despite it being important in the lore

You strike a good balance between humour and detailed analysis, and clearly put in the research to provide lots of cool tidbits about the titles you cover. Plus, your choice in games is just great. Keep on this track, because this channel will likely blow up.
Dead Space is one of my favorite games of all time and I always love watching analysis videos about it. Thank you for the great video!
I had heard a lot of amazing things about Dead Space prior to playing it so I had high expectations but it still managed to exceed them all. It really is a legendary survival horror game.
Definitely not survival horror. It's action horror just like RE4.
@@samspade8830 no ur thinking of dead space 3, dead space 1 is definitely survival horror
@@90daytrial75 nope action horror, DS3 have more, I mean more action
When I finally burned the regenerator alive I actually screamed "burn in hell motherfucker" at the top of my lungs it was so out of the ordinary my father came to check to make sure everything was all right and when I try to explain to him what happened he just looked at me like I was crazy.

Completely agree, there’s no game that does it like dead space. It was truly ahead of its time, never played another game like it. Looking forward to their new project!
the company that made dead space, Visceral Games, this is long gone. sadly, no new projects.
@@aarlavaan there is actually a game called The Callisto Protocol in developement by veterans from Visceral Games.
@@gamingjunkie707 yes, have heard rumors about it but nothing else.
Yessss. A true Unicorn game. One of my all time favourites. I miss this franchise.
Haven't played this since it was out. Just finished watching Hollow's playthrough. Missing these kinds of games
Dead Space will always be one of my favorites. Never been a huge horror gamer myself but this game is just great
same. not a fan of survival horror, but Dead Space is really something else.
@@aarlavaan Dead Space is not survival horror.
@@aarlavaan Dead Space is literally an OTS version of Doom and Quake.
Issac is no demon slayer, he is just an engineer, theres no reason for him to be a silent protagonist.
it gives me anxiety when he shoots at the legs but doesn't turn the cutter horizontally :s
Figured it was only a matter of time until you reviewed Resident Evil in space. And I make that comparison with the highest regards to the game. This is for sure a favorite of mine.
I probably sound like a broken record but Dead space, Mirror's Edge looked fucking beautiful for the time...
Strong art direction goes a LONG way.
A remastered trilogy would be sick
I have hope. I just hope it isn’t false hope lol
@@mrbigglezworth42 Even if they do fuck it up, we'll always have the OGs
Dead space 1 with ds3 weapon mechanics and microtransactions.
14:35 I absolutely love that style of map, it's perfect because it's more than believable, being an engineer a system like that makes perfect sense, it shows you exactly where you should be without throwing a whole map at you, very simple and effective design
hell yeah this game is great. Sucks it won't be continued :(
Check out Callisto Protocol
@@deepdream19 Or Negative Atmosphere!
Fuck EA
The series ended its story in awakened, what more do you want?
@@nydip8131 Well there were actually plans for a Dead Space 4, so...
This is wild. I just finished playing Dead Space on Impossible difficulty and now I get a video of it
and i just restarted it after like 10 years
just finished watching your RE Village review, then you post this, detailing another favorite of mine.
You love to see it
It was the first ever horror game I ever played. This game will always have a special place in my heart.
it really hurt to see that you didnt rotate the plasma cutter at times
That footage was earlier in the game, I got better with that later on.
No other game conveys a feeling of isolation, dread and hopelessness better than this game.
Played it for first time ever a few months back on 360, absolutely unbelievable experience tbh
This is an awesome video. Feels more like a documentary than just a review. I’ve never played dead space, but I’m going to get in on of after watching this. I just hope the workarounds to get it to run well aren’t too much of a headache.
great channel. the dsp shade never gets old
Good job with the video. I’m not a big fan of horror but I liked Dead Space 1 & 2 due to their worlds. I love these futuristic settings that are somewhat grounded in reality. Like the environments and technology from Dead Space, they don’t feel like wild guesses, but natural evolutions from the ones we see today
Now time for Dead Space 2 Review
God I am happy you are talking about this game. Getting my hypes up for Callisto Protocol even more and I thought it couldn't get higher after finding out it's setting is pulled from the original desgin doc for dead space one. Keep up the awesome work my guy.
the exact person i wanted to speak on this game. my favorite survival horror game by far.
*action horror
In order to change the V-sync Value manually you must locate the settings.txt (show hidden files enabled) located at (User)\AppData\Local\Electronic Arts\Dead Space\settings.txt. once open you can change the V-sync Value from 60 to 120 (or double your Monitors Refresh rate). By doing this you should have a proper 60fps with V-sync. So in settings.txt if the V-sync Value is 60, the game will run at 30, if the value is 120 it will run at 60fps, at 240 it will run at 120fps and so on. **Please Note** you will still have potential physics and wall glitches if you run the game over 60, the game was not designed to run higher**
The game engine cuts the refresh rate in half whenever you enable V-sync so doubling it in the Settings.txt "Tricks" the game into thinking it cuts it in half.
This game will always have a special place with me. The second game was great as well. Thank you for the video.
I literally just discovered your channel and I can't wait to binge all your videos!
I appreciate how much work was put into the research on this video.
Do you still have the Xbox test footage? All I can find is poor camera footage of a monitor.
Again, great video.
Check out the ars technica video with Glen Schofield for that footage.
That title killed a part of me 😩 dead space 2 (imo) is the perfect video game sequel ever
Dead Space is the only situation with video games where i watched the movies but never played the games
I have religiously been talking to people about how much I love this game, max Payne 1&2, Alan Wake, fear, condemned 1&2, skate, I love these games so much and really wish they would have a comeback in this style of games.
i hope the callisto protocol will be good. It’s made by the creators of the og dead space
that title lmao you chose violence
Couldn't agree more. I love Dead Space 2 even more but that may be my specific nostalgia.
I agree with you! It's got a much more pulse pounding opener and had many unique story elements that were missing in the first game
This was an amazing game. I'd say a must play for horror fans. The second game was equally amazing.
My first platinum trophy back in 2014 ♥
“We figured out how much a hand weights in zero g” uhhhhhh...
Let’s gooooo hearted by boulderpunch
Also if you play this game on easy mode, it still holds you tightly to the end. Something worth mentioning. I love this game.
EA: Don't worry, we'll do our job next time
One of my favorite games on the Xbox 360
Dead Space is an amazingly atmospheric game, however we are now 13 years past its original release date and it STILL has the same graphical bugs that kill the game during the first 15 minutes, during the turret boss fight section, and finally the final chapter dragging the Marker along for me after all this time. That this happens without fail, and requires the same solution everytime is still the only reason I go back to DS2 over the first any time I play the series.
It's funny because this game still gets reviewed my vertic: awesome
Glenn schofield is legend. And now he’s a major part of the team making the Callisto protocol. That game will be beautiful and I’m sure absolutely terrifying.
I’ve always loved the dead space franchise nice balance of horror and action that is the case for the one and two , three was to much action and the lore was hard to follow in the third game really enjoyed the first and second game didn’t like the third at all , also I enjoyed the animated movies and series surrounding the dead space series
I subbed not because of the content but because of the channel's name
9:28 YOU'RE GOING TO JAPAN
I need a remastered collection very badly.
I remember showing this to my girlfriend; that huge worm grabbed her immediately after I assured her not to worry about the game throwing cheap jump scares at you. We both yelled then laughed :)
That title sums it up perfectly 👌 😂
One of the best horror games of all time.
When I played for the platinum, the plasma cutter only-run was actually the easiest. You unlock all the perks fast, get more ammo and get a lot better at aiming with it and you learn the flow of it. Like the amount of stopping power you need for which enemy. I felt very unstoppable.
10:30 "Very rarely did I ever have to purchase ammo"... that's because u were probably playing it on the Normal default difficulty. This masterpiece is meant to be played on the 2nd highest difficulty
I never bought ammo on hard . All be it very close to having too
"Even EA couldn't ruin it...."
*YET*
Great vid, dude!
Still in my Top 5 GOAT Games on PC.
"Boulder punch"..........hmm....i remember my friend Heisenberg saying something about this.....
A true work of art.
The best small details are the messages or the last words written on the walls they tend to he different in every level.
9:12- Bonus corpse!
I've been playing a ton of 'Prey' lately and never realized how many concepts were derived from Dead Space. Need more SP games like these
You described this game perfect with “Tense & Tension” ..
Gears of War one was kind of scary back then when I first played it also 1 and 2 being one of the best games I owned on the 360
Lol let's just hope that Capcom wouldn't cower at the corner when they see Callisto Protocol dominating the survival horror entertainment.
Especially Silent Hill. Konami just eliminated themselves from the competition.
@XeenoSkull, I hope so. They need the competition in the AAA market, especially after RE3 Remake and now RE Village.
Hopefully, that Dead Space spiritual successor will be single player focused. Don't make the mistake that both Dead Space 3 and FEAR 3 did.
@Phoenixflambe, They cancelled Silent Hills and turned the franchise into a pachinko machine.
As bad as Capcom can be, Konami is worse.
Devs: The locator will keep people from exploring!
Me: Locator says go left… okay, that means there’s something hidden to the right.
*explores right*
Exactly
"So this is the main path i'm supposed to take ? Great, i know where i'm going after looking everywhere"
After a long day of work, Issac gets to live.
I have beat this game so many times and it still gives me anxiety 😅I love it!
Hi boulder punch I’m a relatively new fan and I watched your old videos on thief and how it had really good sound design I was wondering if you’ve played a game called hunt showdown it’s a multiplayer can that heavily relies on sound and being cautious I recommend it if you haven’t played it
Darkside Phil? Jesus this game really had an uphill battle...
the funny thing about the locator is that a lot of players actually rely on the indicated directions to not go there first and explore the other ways instead
@@Totone56 I completely understand and accept it. I just doubt that EA is gonna do a good rerelease of Dead Space. If it happens . :)
You have the siren theme from chapter 11 in this video . Know where to find that audio?
The last two words sum up Callisto Protocol very well. "Punch-Out"
I had to click on this because of the title. There is nothing that EA cannot ruin. I repeat. There is nothing that EA cannot ruin.
Hope you actually cover the tie iin mobile game Dead Space Mobile its actually a very faithful game that explains what happens on the station before you get there in Dead Space 2. Alot of Dead Space retrospectives never cover it despite it being important in the lore
I'm fairly certain Avalanche Reviews covered it.
He did! I was surprised when he mentioned it since a surprising amount of people never even heard of the game
