  • Today we are going to be turning an older Lenovo office PC into a cheap gaming PC but this isn’t just about throwing any old graphics card in and hoping for the best. This is how you do it the right way.

    When my customer opens his back panel and see’s the double sided taped SSD 😂💪🏼

    Great upgrade sir! I had upgrade both SSD and RAM for my dad's laptop and it's been rock solid.

    Also... keep ind mind that there are many OEM office PCs, especially from the Sandy Bridge and Hashwell era, that have proprietary PSU standards, instead of the 20 or 24 pin main power and so on.

    • @TechLabUK
      @TechLabUK  5 месяцев назад

      Yeah this one had a 20pin PSU but 24Pin socket on the board so got lucky.

    For Cyberpunk, none of those graphics settings or FSR will help when your CPU is already at 90+% usage. If your crowds are set to Low and your CPU is maxed out there are no more frames to be had. BTW I play this with an Optiplex 9020, i7-4790 (and 5600 XT or 3060-6GB) and with Low crowds you can just get to 60fps but I like at least Medium crowds to make Night City feel alive. And I put up with 50fps at city center, it's all good!

      Right on. When the CPU is getting hammered not much left to do. Though I have seen some pair a card that can do frame generation with old CPUs like this to smooth things out when testing for the lulz. BTW you the same lew from the TPU forums?

    I have something similar using the classic old xeon workstation and a 1060 6gb. A decent basic gaming machine. One cool thing is a lot of these office pcs have service manuals online so you can check when browsing ebay things like psu wattage and if it has spare pcie connections. I got lucky and had a spare 6 pin so didnt need to swap the psu.

      Sounds cool. A GTX 1060 would have been a better choice for this one but I donated mine to another tech channel as they were doing a build for a kid and I wanted them to have something nice for it.

    I've been playing in the mini segment, but a lot of the lessons there translate.
    If you can stretch the budget to a platform with a fourth generation (haswell) cpu, it will give you AVX2 instructions which helps a fair bit with some modern titles and emulators.
    If you have adequate cooling you can use throttlestop to force the all-core boost frequency all the time, with the only downside being a bit more power consumption. This is a free 10%+ boost.
    Ensure you have two sticks of ram running dual channel, with cpu-z. While dual channel doesn't make much of a difference on modern platforms, when you're pushing the cpu hard on an old platform, this will help significantly with 1% low. (i.e. less stutter). If you use the integrated graphics, dual channel ram will give you a 10% fps boost, more or less.

    Nice transformation, I like that you did a baseline benchmark on the original spec!

    • @TechLabUK
      @TechLabUK  5 месяцев назад

      Always gotta do those baselines. For this one the before was actually quite amusing and I actually know people who do play games with those built in iGPUs.

    I love that adapter. I use the cheap plastic ones but this one looks quite serious!
    I hate when the SSD is just dangling in there like a piece of sad fruit LOL.

      I like to use the adaptors and things to really finish things off. Always look nicer and means they are easy to work on / upgrade later.

    did almost same thing but managed to swap the cooler

  • @Dingbat1967

    So for 40 pounds for the base system and maybe 100 pounds of parts, that's a pretty good upgrade.

    • @TechLabUK
      @TechLabUK  5 месяцев назад +1

      The system cost us £22 and the parts would be around £80-£100 depending on what you get. Runs general games ok.

    Made the same mistake on my Lenovo build, although it wasn't a tower-cooler, but a flower cooler.
    Also from Arctic. Alpine 23 if I recall correctly.
    The plastic clips broke right away.

    What do you do with the builds after, do you sell them on and if so where?

    • @TechLabUK
      @TechLabUK  5 месяцев назад +2

      Mostly they are stacked against a wall at the studio and sometimes I tear one down for parts or I tear them down because a friend wants the parts.

    However, when they do the testing, it is always the same. They do the testing with the side panel off and never on.

    • @TechLabUK
      @TechLabUK  5 месяцев назад

      Why would it matter? Not exactly a peek performance high end system. usually live testing like this has no side on it so people can see it working or if it is a gaming case to stop the glare coming back from the glass. It has no effect on the testing it self aside from sometimes we will put the side on to cut down noisy old systems so the mic doesn't pick it up.

    Hi... my sister bought this for a while back,an exact case with lenovo thinkcentre motherboard with an i3-4170 and 8gb DDR3 RAM, though it seems not working anymore,thinking of upgrading on a budget but keeping the case and was looking for any advice ....anyway awesome content as always

    • @TechLabUK
      @TechLabUK  2 месяца назад

      The front IO on these cases for the USB ports etc use specific wires so you would have to sort all them out as well. not usually worth it tbh as new, budget cases are so cheap now.
