“All Eyes on Rafah" image is likely A.I.

  • More than 40 million Instagram users have shared this graphic to their stories using a user-generated template in recent days, according to Instagram. The viral graphic appeared after a deadly Israeli strike Sunday on a tent encampment for displaced people in Rafah in southern Gaza, which killed 45 people and elicited worldwide outrage.
Unlike other graphic imagery about the war that has gone viral, this image is likely to have been generated by artificial intelligence. Some on social media have criticized the image as replacing distressing footage of what’s actually happening in Gaza - from photographers and people on the ground - with a fake image generated by technology.
Here’s what we know about the image, and where the phrase comes from.

Not necessarily. It's certainly not a real photo, but it could have been manually "photoshopped" classically, 3D-modeled or otherwise be created by digital (or even analogue, given sufficient skill and patience) art techniques without generative deep neural network help. It's likely "AI" was used, because that's just much more convenient, but it's not the only way to create images like this.

I think the message is still clear, but just using an image like this comes across really performative. People could be sharing actual information about the events unfolding, or donation links to charitys or family's affected. Instead it feels no different then simply liking a twitter post.
Also there's just no need for ai? There are so. So. SO many pictures of the horrors unfolding but the use of ai (specifically it being a made up image) makes it feel like it's downplaying them. There is no need to generate something, show the real struggles people are living through.

I think ppl are missing the point - it was never MEANT to be seen as a real image of Rafah. It's a message to pay attention to Rafah, using the general image of a refugee camp - it doesn't need to be accurate, just evocative of the poor, cramped conditions of a camp. The fact that it's AI is a distraction.
Also, I think the feedback from the social media expert could have been clearer - the main reason it's gone viral is that it's an evocative message calling attention to a problem ppl really care about. The fact that it's sanitized just allows it to pass social media filters

I mean it’s pleasant to look at, and gives a nice “moral of the story” feeling of the idea trying to be spread. It has a certain fictional artistry about the events people like their “mascot picture” to have. It makes sense it would go viral, it looks like a movie poster or something designed to draw attention from a marketing engineering standpoint, rather than depict a specific detailed real life thing.
Essentially, it’s got a nice and convenient sort of broad message about the event that is both pleasant visually to most people and gets across the message it’s trying to convey.

This is such important piece of information for EVERYONE it's insane how the education system doesn't even touch on something as personal and core to people's identity as hormones and their effects on our bodies, we need more scientific thinking in our education system and for that to happen people need to be aware of the lack of scientific thinking in the current system.

Art has always been used for politics like this, i dont personally see ai art as real art, but everyone complaining abt it not being real or it being perfomative take a step back and realize that 45 MILLION people saw it and were invoked with enough passion to want to share it. Even if 70% of those people were just being performative thats still more than 3 million people who saw it and where genuinely moved by it. Nothing matters right now but getting people to realize what is happening, and if some people need an easily digestable version of the truth to listen then it is our responsibility as people who dont have to see the full uncut ugly truth day in day out to give it to them. We dont get the privilege of writing off people just cause we dont like how we have to word it for them. If they get the point, and their heart and mind is swayed that is all that matters and even if every single person that shared it was just being performative then oh well, someone had to be swayed somewhere along the line and if not then it literally doesnt do anything to the actual genocide happening so i don't care and neither should you. Its either just internet drama or it did help, either way complaining abt it does nothing but make us look like we can never be satisfied even if we are 100% correct, and im not saying that to put the blame on us to look a certain way, im saying it literally only does harm except for the 5 minute rush you feel explaining why youre a better activist than them.

I don't think people care that it's AI and most likely knew (I did). And even if I didn't think it was AI, I knew it wasn't Rafah. I believe it went viral because of the message. It's a symbolic photo that isn't too gory/sad to share

I think it’s because it helped people feel like they were sharing an awareness ofRafah but without sharing the horrific imagery?Idk why that image was chosen. Maybe because instagram is blocking lots of Palestine content? Or maybe just because people saw it on other peoples instagram stories and felt pressured to share it. I don’t think many people thought it was real though (hopefully)
