Whitney is from Newark, Nj. Her mother Cissy was part of the Drinkard family singers (Gospel), and did back up vocals for famous singers including Elvis, Aretha Franklin and her niece (Whitney’s cousin) Dionne Warwick. Very musical family. Dionne has second most charted singles on any female besides Aretha in rock era, Whitney grew up watching Dionne who was a mega star
You should react to Whitney, Cissy and Gary singing Wonderful Counselor-if you haven’t already. You will understand why this family is a family of singers
Cissy was more than a background singer for Elvis. She had a career as a solo artist and as a part of her family gospel group. Most people know Cissy for singing the high notes on Aretha Franklins Ain’t No Way. If you’ve ever heard Whitney sing (in her earlier concert performance) He, I Believe, that was originally sang by Cissy. Whitney came from a long line of vocalist that’s part of the reason Whitney was so great, it’s in her DNA.
I am a HUGE Whitney fan but IMO nothing beats the original from the Chess soundtrack. And I had been hearing this versions years before I heard the OG. Plus mother and daughter singing about the same man felt weird to me LOL
You can check out a clip out of her hitting her mothers falsetto note from 'I will always love you' randomly. I think it was from their reality show after she died. She didn't have what her mother had, but you realize the potential that was within her, so sad

I heard Whitney's daughter was a really good singer like her too. Never got to hear anything from her though since she died too.
