    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  Год назад +1

      Action cameras don't have autofocus and instead are all fixed focus (GoPro, DJI, Insta360). The minimum focusing distance on the Ace Pro is a bit further than DJI's, but it's been working great for me. I think if you're looking at close focusing filters, you could even sharpen it up more, but then you lose a lot of background detail

    As for the constant charging, check out Dongar Technologies mirror adapters. Many cars have powered mirrors (e.g. for garage openers) and one can hook up a USB port directly onto that power source. This way no need to mess with the inner liner of the car. Maybe a topic for another review? It looks that your Sprinter van doesn't have powered mirror though. What about the second car in the family?

    Cool concept. And the quality of the recorded video is way better than my current DC. Could be decent on a longer trip.
    I do feel like there are 2 things that are missing:
    * Most dash cams will automatically lock a looped file when an accident/shock is felt. A driver should never have to remember to hit save/stop/whatever to save the file.
    * Looping on a DC does not just save 1 file, but keeps saving file after file and overwrites the oldest file when needed. Does that happen here? Or does it only keep the last 30 minutes total once the power is removed?

    Personally I think Motion ND is an underestimated feature as well.

  • @lonerider68
    @lonerider68 Год назад +1

    GoPro Labs firmware technically has offered this feature since 2020 (and backward compatible to Hero7). However, I tried it with a Hero8 (bought an Ulanzi door to expose the USB-C port) on my *rear* window (makes it less conspicuous) and it was very unreliable. I suspect part of that was it was a 3 year old battery and the charging speed for the USB-C still wasn't faster than the drain when the camera was on.
    So you really should try using it for a week to see if it works as well in practice as it does in theory. For one thing, batteries degrade in hot weather and having your camera bake in the sun all day isn't great for the health of the battery and/or circuitry.
    That being said... the other features of the GoPro Labs are pretty convenient - you can program setting via QR code, and you can do things like schedule recording/timelapses to a specific time (e.g. start recording at 6AM for the sunrise, that way the battery is conserved in the hours before that time and you don't need to wake up early to turn it on).

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  Год назад +2

      Not sure if it works with GoPro Labs on the Hero 8, but on the Ace Pro you don't need the battery in the camera for this feature to work. So if you're looking to save your battery from the scorching heat of cars sitting in the sun, that's pretty solid!

    • @lonerider68
      @lonerider68 Год назад

      @@DavidManningvlog Technically the GoPro works without the battery with the "turn on when powered via USB-C feature"... but if the USB power cutoff, the video can get corrupted because not all of the buffered recording was save on the SD the moment the power cut out.
      I doubt they added a capacitor (this is what some dashcams have instead of a battery to deal with the temperature) to the Ace Pro to avoid this so it depends on how graceful the Ace Pro handle sudden loss of power.

    This functionally can also be accomplished with GoPro, but you need to install the "Labs" firmware and build a QR code. It's nice that AcePro has all of it baked right into the menus, right out of the box.
    For GoPros that have GPS, the Labs firmware also lets you create a speed trigger - for example, start recording when you hit 25mph.

For example, my GoPro shows my contact info when it powers on, and changing the battery or memory card doesn't stop it.

    Love the camera but will never buy it. The loop recording limitation is a deal-killer for me. Who thinks it's a good idea to never have history beyond 30 minutes into the past? Who thinks its a good idea to have to stop recording so you don't lose the video of the crash that just happened in front of you and there's no more recording until you can off-load the crash video you want to save? Yeah, I know, you can pull over and switch back to non-looping. But, why is so much maintenance required? It's loop recording done WRONG! He compares it to a DashCam. Well, a DashCam will make short clips until the card is filled and then go back and replace the oldest clip, then the next oldest clip... The history I get from my DashCam is DAYS in the past! NOT just the last 30 minutes! Plus, When I see a crash, I can press a button on my DashCam so to lock that video segment so that it's never over-written. My Sena 10C Evo helmet communicator for motorcycle riding did loop recording right. Just like the DashCam, it filled its card with three minute segments when plugged into shore power before going back days to start replacing the oldest recordings when the card is full.

    • @DavidManningvlog
      @DavidManningvlog  9 месяцев назад

      So you're saying that a feature on your dashcam is that when you see a crash, you can press a button to lock that segment so it's not overwritten, but that on the Ace Pro it's a bug that you have to press the button to save the video? Agreed that this isn't the perfect dash cam, but for an 8K shooting action camera that's incredible in it's own right to ALSO be able to act as a dash cam is pretty sweet!

    • @mrdonsmith
      @mrdonsmith 9 месяцев назад

      Not what I said. Ace Pro and Go Pro do segment lopping whereas, for example, my Sena 10c EVO helmet communicator with 0:04 a camera, does SPACE looping. Segment lopping only continuously rewrites a 30-minute segment. You’ll never have video history going back more than 30 minutes!. If you want to save that video you must stop it and start a new segment which interrupts the ride. My Sena 10c Evo has SPACE looping which means recording 3-minute recordings until it fills up your card and only then starts replacing older segments one at a time. You can ride for days and see your whole video history. Something happen you want to save? Just press a button and only that segment will be protected from being overwritten but you continue to ride and continue to record. Segment looping is truly a stupid idea on an action camera.
