Asparagus is a lot of fun to grow! (and eat too, if I'm honest 😁)
I've grown a variety called Connover's Colossal from seed, and to be honest I think they've done better for me than the crowns I bought.
I currently grow all my asparagus in large pots. If I topped up with manure over winter and remembered to harvest, I imagine that they would be producing substantially more, but considering how I've neglected them save for water, I'm pleased that they're doing as well as they have.
Just this last weekend I discovered that one of the pots had a crack in the side - and the asparagus had put two spears/ferns out of the hole 😂 I was so amused by it that I'm just going to let it do its thing. I just need to remember to check the side of the pot next spring when I'm harvesting 😆

I was given asparagus crowns decades ago. Those days we were told to plant them three feet apart. Which I did.
OMG! It’s taken 10 years to get good crops from them.
I was then told by a hermit type grower to plant my own grown seedlings BANG next door to each other. So I did.
Yes. 10 years on I now get a somewhat decent harvest of large asparagus from the initial plantings but sooooooo much more from those I planted “much too close”.
A commercial grower has since told me that further apart (3 feet each way) is better, as long as one fertilises with high nitrogen AND sprays with insecticide.
If I were starting again, I’d just whack’em in as close as I can. And let them grow in competition and pick as much as I wanted when I wanted. Lolz.

Oh JB I was just watching another RUclipsr and he was using a power drill with one of those attachments to dig up holes for his transplants! I dont use it since I have Jessies kind of sandy soil and container gardening - but thought of you incase you’re still looking for a diff solution than the 3d printer. Btw dont listen to that stupid comment! You’re doing awesome!

I love my asparagus plants. They are one of those crops that mostly get eaten before ever getting into the house. Fresh asparagus raw is just delicious and so easy to snap and snack while working in the garden. And towards the part of the season when it's most productive they are just so easy to toss into bags in the freezer for winter!

OMGOSH, I'm SO envious, JB! I planted some asparagus last season (and yes, totally Aliens Facehugger vibes, lol), and I was shocked how sweet the asparagus is fresh from the garden! I, unfortunately, don't have a permanent space for them, though, so I just harvested everything that came up and then planted other stuff over them. When we have a property of our own, asparagus will most def be one of the first veggies I plant straight away. 🐱Hugs to Jess! 🌺I am super excited that the foxgloves I grew from seed last year are ginormous now!!! I am definitely focusing more on flowers to add color to my garden, and to invite more pollinators this season. 🌼🏵🌿

I think that if you had planted some asparagus on your original plot it would have not received enough sun and the beds were lacking in nutrients. Now you have better prepared beds and the bed you have chosen will get more sunlight 👍
Apparently many people grow strawberries in asparagus beds because they are very shallow rooting

Asparagus is one of the deepest rooted veg you can grow btw, 10-15 feet. Once established just protect the centre of the plant, do not worry about the roots, they will be just fine.

    • @JBNat
