Brush Arbor Meeting - Part 1 - Shannon County Film Digitization Project

Camera roll 016 is one of seven camera rolls (016, 020, 021, 022, 023, 023A, 024) that record a Pentecostal brush arbor meeting held in the summer of 1978, in Winona, Mo. Construction of the brush arbor itself is contained on camera rolls 001 and 002 of this collection. Many of the same people appear in both sequences. Fred Atkins (see interview, roll 002) is the main preacher for this night's service. The service lasted nearly three hours and only portions of it were filmed. Camera roll 016 shows the early part of the service beginning in daylight and covering events through dusk into full darkness. It includes the opening of the service, exuberant praying and praising of God, singing by the congregation and groups on stage, spirited preaching, and healing by the laying on of hands. Fred Atkins opens the service by introducing what will be one of the highlights of the evening: Brother Monroe, a new preacher just starting out (he preaches on CR 021 and 022). Songs include "I'll Fly Away" "Just A Little Talk With Jesus" "The Glory Land Way" and "Oh, I Want To See Him." Two cameras were used to film the brush arbor service. Sometimes both cameras covered the same action from different angles, but often one camera covered the preacher or singers while the other filmed cutaways of the audience. Rolls 016, 021, 023A are from camera one; rolls 020, 022, 023, 024 are from camera two. Camera roll 016 covers approximately the same time interval as camera roll 020. The young woman up front with the tambourine looked like to me a member of the Black race. Maybe not. What difference does it make? Different races think differently, act differently, vote differently etc.
