The idea behind the Ruby script powering this is actually pretty straightforward - it just averages the colors of each emoji, and then averages the color of a block of a frame of a gif, and then replaces the frame with the closest emoji. Neat idea, fantastic execution. Must have taken a lot of hard work to make this video.
