Gear Loadout: RovyVon Aurora A5 Series (Issue): What's Wrong Here? A5U A5UV

- The RovyVon Aurora A5 series of flashlights has been my go-to EDC light for years. It is small, tough, bright enough for anything I need to do, and very feature-rich for an EDC light that's under $40.
Specifications and parameters can be found at this agenda-free link (I receive nothing if you use it or not): www.rovyvon.com/products/auro...
I waited for the company to switch the charging connection to USB-C to upgrade, which recently happened. I and a friend each ordered one of these Gen 3 models, charged them and, to my surprise, there was an issue with one...or so I thought.
A full, long-term review of this will follow. This is simply an unboxing and addressing a curious issue I found with one.
Let me know if you have any questions below. Thanks and have a great week!

Very cool flashlight! Weird that 1 was off. Loved flashlight body!
I don't know what's up with that one, but I prefer the standard programming. Without an instant-on mode, a flashlight becomes much less useful to me. I am glad it turned out to be the same as my older model. I am getting old and change sucks. 🤣 Have a good one, brother Ed!
It's amazing how bright those little lights are!🐒❤️🔥👊
Yessir. This little thing challenges all but my Olight Mini Warrior 2 for brightness. Way more features than the others for under $40, too. Have a good one, brother Tim!
Thanks Grumpy.
No problem, brother Byron.
I had the same one I believe. Mine was also glow in the dark...blue... Wore it as a necklace for a couple years or so. Put it through the washer and dryer by accident but it still worked. Need to get myself a new one.
I have an original A5 that is still going and have bought and given away 3 others in the meantime. They last forever unless you really do something directly to them. I have left mine outside in storms, washed it, and dropped it more times than I can recall, but it keeps on working. I thought the battery would have given out by now, but it hasn't missed a beat. The older models go on sale for under $30 from time to time. The A7 is the blue GITD model, I think. There is also a purple version, but the green glows much brighter than the other two. Have a great weekend, Nate!
Awesome, brother. I didn't know about these flashlights, thanks. I'll have to check them out 👍
My favorite EDC flashlights of all. They are small, rechargeable, and I have one that has been running for 6 years and no problem. It is a great little light for camping too. That glow in the dark feature comes in handy in the woods. Have a good weekend, brother!
Grumpy I don't think I have the patience to attend a weekend seminar to operate a flashlight. In my hands I can definitely see this flashlight getting flying lessons 😂🤣
That's why the instant-on feature is kind of important to me. I don't want to have to think when I grab my flashlight and need it. Having to do more then just mash the button to get light is a no-go. The additional features and button pushes, I can deal with when I need them and it isn't an emergency. Even the off-programmed one is less confusing than most of the Olights I own.
@@GrumpyGrunt FLYING LESSONS ‼️💯🤣
So many settings… I’m confused lol
The settings are for the extra features. The main setting I was worried about was the instant-on mode. If a person can't get light just by mashing the button (like the off-programmed one), it's no good to me. I like that I get 650 lumens instantly from this tiny thing just by pushing the button. The glowing and side lights and everything are all just bonus features I use camping.
Super awesome lights!!!!! For the money I mean..... yes I'm kinda partial to olights.... but that doesn't mean there not great lights...... one thing I'll say about lights nowadays.....innovation is on ANOTHER LEVEL!!!! Good stuff grump
Right on, brother Nick. I like my RovyVons even more than my Olights and Acebeams. There are some great lights out there, but I agree; the innovation in RovyVon is amazing, and I appreciate that. Have a great weekend, brother!
Don't know about those! Never tried them! Have a wonderful weekend!!
Thanks, Mike! RovyVon is my favorite of all light brands. My original A5 is still running like a champ after years of daily use. One of the best $35 I ever spent. It's great for camping too, as the glow in the dark feature lasts quite a long time. I hope you have a great weekend too!
You need to get one. These little lights are amazing. I never thought I’d like a flashlight so much but I would always be showing off the flashlight to my friends at every opportunity I could get!
Wow that's a cool stuffs grumpy thanks for sharing. Keep safe! Much love!
Thank you, dear! Have yourself a good weekend over there!
Interesting lights. Havemt seen these before
I grabbed one years ago on a lark because it glowed in the dark and had UV lights on the side. It turned out to be a great EDC light that is also perfect as a small light while camping. That glow lasts a long time, so it is easy to locate in the dark. Take care and have a great weekend, Mike!
I saw another channel "Jon Gadget" and he mentioned the operation issue you have can be changed with firmware. The episode about the suggested fix was "Best Keychain Flashlight for EDC (Everday Carry)" in chapter 4 or 4:31
minutes in. Good luck!
I have never messed with the firmware on these, but it makes sense you might be able to change programming on them. Thanks.
Very nice
It's a great flashlight in a tiny, glowing form factor. I hang it on a ridgeline or in the top of my tent when it isn't lashed to my neck knife. Have a good weekend, brother Dave!
@@GrumpyGrunt take care
Good stuff brother grumpy I’m going to have to check one of those out
These are my favorite EDC flashlight. It's a bit small for some people, but I keep a lanyard on it to extend my grip and hang it from stuff. You should also be getting another package at some point with your Olight and some other small stuff in it. I thought it had arrived in time, but apparently not. I hope you had a good birthday, brother Josh.
Sounds like there's some duds floating around. Thanks for shedding some light on this issue, Brother Grumpy. Have a great weekend!
It seems like it got a chipset meant for a different light or something. Things work fine, but the program is different. I don't know what's up. Take care, brother!
I'm afraid I'd lose it 🤣
I honestly thought I would have by now, too. I keep lanyards on them to help with that. Take care, Miya!
The UV on the A5 is only to charge the GITD body. So you made an 11 minute video for something that needs a warranty repair?
The primary purpose is to charge the GITD, but it works for general UV/blacklight stuff too. And, no. It turns out that the functions on these are apparently programmable, which I could find nowhere on their site or elsewhere. It isn't a warranty issue. It's a failure at the factory to put the right programming on the right flashlight. Discovering an issue and pointing it out to the general public is part of what I do on this channel.
Nice..love my Rovyvon!
They're still my favorite EDC flashlight brand, bar none. Have a good weekend, brother!
That's one unique flashlight
It's the newest version of my oldest EDC flashlight. RovyVon has been making this light for years and I love it. It's perfect for my typical EDc as well as a great small camping torch to get in and out of the hammock/tent and back at night. The glow last quite a long time. Have a great weekend, Mike!
@@GrumpyGrunt Have a great weekend brother Grump ✌🏻
Great info, thanks. I have A5U G2, love it. Want a newer USB-C one, but MAN, trying to figure out the difference in all their Aurora models is painful!!
So confusing, at least IMO.
Believe I just want one with USB-C, side light in white and red. Maybe an A7 or A8, then there's the "Nichia 219C 5000K" vs "SST-20 6500K", talk about analysis paralysis. lol
The A5 and A7 models GITD (glow), while the A8 is just clear with the side lights. So, if you want the GITD feature but no UV light, only red and white: a.co/d/ilqQr4B
The A8 model doesn't GITD, bit it is where you get to choose the temperature of your LED chipset. "5000k" is warmer, more natural, and only gives off a 420 lumen max brightness. The 6500k is cooler, but brighter, coming in at a 650 lumen max (like the original A5). If you aren't using it for recording, I'd go with the brighter one. a.co/d/2Og69gq
@@GrumpyGrunt great info, thanks!!
I have an A5 G2 with Nichia 219C. Great flashlight. I also wished it was USB-C. I bought the A5 G4. It has the newer switch. The A7 glows blue, and will go dim faster than the A5 (green). I find having 2 white side lights more useful than having one and the other being red/blue. SST-20 is 650 lumens and noticeably brighter than the Nichia 219C, which is 450 lumens.
Rovyvon does make good lights. I have an a4 ti. It's a great little light. Great video brother 👍
I keep looking at one in Ti or Aluminum to throw on my keychain. I don't trust the plastic bodies to last that abuse. They are my absolute favorites for EDC though. Have a good one, brother.
Solid use case for UV built in other than disinfectant - geocaching. Some caches have UV info and you need uv.
Right on. I didn't realize that, but it makes sense. Now, I want to go back to some of the old caches I found and see if there's any "secret" entries or anything. Take care!
Is one not a generation 3 and the other is a generation 4?. The user interface is slightly different between them.
The easy way to check is the gen3 has a rubber button, the gen 4 is metal 👍
No, sir. They put the wrong programming on one of them I had gotten. No big deal, really, but it freaked me out that two were normal and one was different. I also learned that these can also be slightly reprogrammed. There is apparently more than one program flashed onto the internal eprom sometimes, and they sent this one out with the program for a different light on it.
I just gave it to someone who had never owned a RovyVon before, so they wouldn't know the difference, and they love it too. Thanks for the comment!
Good man... 👍 Nice wee gift to pass onto someone.... 😊
