    One more tip specifically for peach and nectarine trees: in the autumn remove all dead leaves from beneath the tree, if allowed to rot naturally into the soil they release a mildly toxic compound for the parent tree (won't kill it but will slow down growth and decrease fruiting). In theory you can compost the leaves for fertilizing any other plants except stone-fruit trees, but if you have a small garden better get rid of them altogether (you can spread them over a field or forest, won't do any harm to the environment).

    I have a tip for ripening peaches or any stone fruit; set the peaches on a linen or cotton towel, set the fruit with on their tops (where the stem was), space them so the fruit do not touch each other, put another towel over the top and finally check every day and remove ripe peaches. Also, remember fruit grows on previous year stems…

    Hello, I have a nectarine tree that is 5 yrs old and had yield some fruit in the past but they dropped before ripening. Also, I never pruned it. I recently fertilized it with Jobes fertilizer. Do we need another nectarine for cross pollination? Is it too late to prune it now? My tree is about 15 ft now. Please advice.

    • @DaisyCreekFarms
      @DaisyCreekFarms  Год назад +1

      You do not need another nectarine for pollination, they are self pollinating. Which zone are you in? Are you getting enough cold weather for the tree to go dormant?

  • @asmrandthensome5934
    @asmrandthensome5934 Год назад +1

    We have a nectarine that sits next to a peach tree. This year the nectarines tasted like peaches! However both years the nectarine tree gave fruit that looked "ugly". It had scarring and sap leaking out of some., It also has these little beetles coming out the top, I believe they're sap beetles.
    Part of it is my fault the the fruit wasn't picked on time, but is the scarring done by then too? The scarring was present when the fruit was just growing, way before they were ripe.
    I've eaten some anyways, just take off the part that looks brown on the inner part, like you Id prefer a bug over a pesticide but are these fruit with the sap beetles better off tossed than eaten?

    • @DaisyCreekFarms
      @DaisyCreekFarms  Год назад +1

      Scarring occurs when immature thrips nymphs feed on the surface of tiny fruit, just as it begins to develop. Feeding creates scars on the fruit surface and these scars enlarge as the fruit grows. You need to spray with Spinosad right when fruit begins to develop to kill off the larvae stage. Also use neem oil with pure castle soap every week. Yes, fruit with some bugs is definitely better than eating pesticides. My great grandfather used to say "I will not eat food sprayed with poison" I made a video on his teachings here ruclips.net/video/GUfgxdH7WAs/видео.html

      Look for aphids, they're tiny green parasitic insects (smaller than a fruit fly) that cling to the back of young leafs, usually more towards the tips of the branches. Infested trees will abort the fruits in order to survive, later on the infested leaves will get deformed and may even dry up completely.
      The best bio aphid treatment I know is a home made concoction that goes like this: in boiling (tap) water add black pepper powder (10g/l), hot chilly powder (10g or 2 chopped chilly peppers per liter) and raw garlic (2 crushed cloves per liter). Boil for 5-10 minutes, than let it sit until it cools down to room temperature (also settling the solids on the bottom), than pour the fluid into a spray bottle or small atomizer (preferably through a sieve) and apply it on the infected tree. It's a contact pesticide, meaning it works only if you spray it directly on the parasites, so be thorough with it. The effect is almost instantaneous, killing everything except some of the eggs, so it's best to apply at least twice at 3 days interval. It's not toxic but it's basically pepper tea, so be careful not to spray it in your face. It's also not harmful for the plants (of any kind) and rain will wash off the residue into the ground, where it degrades naturally into a weak fertilizer.
