Hi Ryan, not sure if you ever read this. I was about to take my life last year and i was severely depressed even though i looked normal to my loves ones and very successful at work. After coming across with one of your videos (i believe it was "you are not special", I started binge watching your content and I love how funny you are and motivated me to jump into fitness head first. Got myself a full extra group membership and went every single day and it changed my life.
Now i am planning to get married and have kids next year and i want to thank you for the extension!
    Be well my friend

Three of these exercises you have been championing a variation of for half a year or so. The inward rotated lateral raise didn't a name before, so I called it "One for the homies", as in pour out a drink for fallen friends. At the end of the motion your arm is in the position of dumping your beverage.
The Poor Man's Viking Press, another one I had no idea what it was called, I go scapular plane and my dumbell is inline with my arm. Same grip as a hammer curl.
I've lost about fifty pounds over the last eight months and your videos about finding the best practices when lifting have been a huge help, thank you Ryan.

@darsmith9971 protein powders have changed a ton since I first started them back 22 yrs ago. There's a ton of brands out there now. Too many to pick from. The right protein powder for you could be different from someone else's perfect protein. It all depends on what your goals are, what your macros are, how much protein you get from food, how often you plan to take protein, how often you eat, ect.
I take multiple brands currently, but I take at minimum 25g of protein isolate every 4 hrs. Yes, I do have an alarm and wake up in the middle of the night and take 25g of protein. Ha. You have to stay committed to see results. GL to you!

As a post-grad in a more established field of science than Huberman, as you say, we have to remember that people can put out good things out into the world and make mistakes as well. But I will say, the LARGEST amount of "bad" research I've seen come from neuroscientists. It is a very difficult area and still very new - I can't count how many times I read a meta-analysis of some neuroscience topic and, when following through to the research analysed, realised the authors of the meta-analysis misrepresented or misunderstood more than half of the cited research, and this is the most easy to digest part, some experiments and some tests and some analysis are complicated and their issues might be very insidious - to the point that sometimes the error is not even in the study itself but in the base assumptions, like, most often, asking questions they got from just-so stories, so being wrong from the outset.
It will get better, if I'm not mistaken every single area of science had to go through teething pains. Neuroscience hasn't been through it yet - for the most simple example; fMRI is less than what, 25 years old? And it still suffers from a lot of limitations that can cast all kinds of doubt about findings using it as the primary tool.
My point being - even the most well intentioned Dr. of Neuroscience will deal with misinformation and will propagate bad research and or bad data. It is bound to happen, but will get better. For now, people with good scientific background MUST dive just a little bit deeper every time neuroscientists make assertions, a bit deeper than they would go when phds of other areas* make assertions.
    * - there are some other fields that suffer as much if not more than neuroscience, like nutrition (already getting much better than 20 years ago), psychology (absolute mess) and literally*2 everything that has "evolutionary" in the title (except, you know, strict biology taxonomy).
*2 - literally i.e. "not literally", which is unfortunately one of the correct usages of the term.

For anyone who likes the idea of Viking press but don't have that machine at the gym, most regular Pendulum Squat machines can be used as a Viking Press. Just use the "swingarm" with the back rest on it and use the bars for the plates as handles, and there you go ^^ Pretty much the exact movement they use in Strongman comps.

@@PhysiquePhilosopher ya, I'm a 64 year old fart who has suffered lots of injuries and had multiple surgeries over the decades. Thankfully, very few injuries lifting. Mostly from dumbassery from my youth. Today's approach to lifting is light years from my early days. Ryan offers up some really good content. I saw several exercises today that are definitely going into my workout regimen. Cheers!

@@mickylawless1941 Thanks for the reply... I love hearing from older guys and your perspective as I want to enjoy all this stuff for a whole lifetime and I'm only 37... I already put the adjusted angle to lateral raises into my workouts on my channel but is too early to say whether that suits my development but the logic on all this is sound at least!

i defo understand where he is coming from and its facts.(iont really agree about the volume tho, most people seem to not recover from it)
i used to do that before and it definitely works especially for the uprights and the rear delt movement i call em the skier raise cause it mimics the movement while skiing i just keep my hand neutral instead of palm facing you.(that blew my rear delt).
however i think we should try to find what works for each of us because i have seen the most gains doing intensity for side delts(doing intensity with his strict form fucks up my shoulders, so i cant) going slightly above the ears and with the hands in line with the elbow, obviously still pulling at a 30 to 45 degree angle.

I checked out the website but I got a couple questions for anyone that has bought the program.
    1. How do you get the app? I can't seem to find it in the google app store.
    2. What program are you using, how long have you been using it, and why did you choose it?
    3. Is there a program that is more delt and back focused?

Hey Ryan, can you do an episode on breathwork? I'm curious what you think about the methods described in the book "Breath" by James Nestor.

10:02 These look like there's tons of biceps involved 🙉 They also look very similar to the underhand db bench press (on flat bench) taught by Jeff Caveliere, which supposedly is great for upper chest! Well, I did those for a while and felt them everywhere else except the upper chest...
The following Viking Press (? Usually these are called Landmine presses) looked like the exact same exercise, but better!

What is a good program for a beginner? I’m 47 and well I’m basically a marshmallow but I’m getting off the couch and trying to lose weight and get healthy, I’m down from 275 to 243. I been going to the gym but I don’t really know what I’m doing so I end up getting on a couple machines walking on the treadmill and spending about 45 minutes in the sauna. I downloaded the app. I like the fact that there’s videos that shows me how to do the workouts but now I need to pick a plan.

Love your content and definitely enjoy learning about the different exercises. However, I get stuck between working out for fun which is less efficient but keeps me motivated and working out to get bigger which would be more efficient but feels like work and is less motivating.

One tid bit for any raise variation. Mind muscle connection to control the acceleration/velocity of the movement at the bottom and top. I think to myself can I maintain a slow move with as little acceleration as possible at the bottom, the hit my spot at the top and try to hold the weight still before controlling the drop. Definitely need to lower the load with this technique and you need not do it every set or every rep. Good luck!

Another substitute for the Viking press attachment is using the standing calf raise machine for shoulder presses.
